Title: You people
Post by: tb80 on April 23, 2013, 04:53:49 PM
With all the webers, do you use all of them. I'm talking to those with a ton of kettles especially those that have the older classics.  I am seeing some people that have ten, twenty webers. Do you actually use all of them?  If so, how do you choose which one to use. Also, can you tell a difference in the ones from the 60s/70s vs the ones today.

I use a large portion of the ones I have in sort of an irregular rotation.....some of the older ones have three wheel vents on the intake (bottom) & seem to work better for low heat smoking......

Some of them are in parts & pieces, waiting for rehab & special projects.....

This thread tells SOME of the tale as to age, but a part of why we're here is the ongoing research of the age, styles, types of different products that Weber has made.......they don't have any kind of published history, so we're on our own....

http://weberkettleclub.com/forums/weber-kettles-accessories/vent-code-dates/

Some folks have ones that are so rare, they are reserved as "lookers" not "cookers"

Some days how I choose is whoever is in the way when I walk out there...... 8)

I'm a collector, I bring certain ones out at certain times.  It's fun and everyone gets excited to see the different grills...It's a fun cheap hobby!

I collect and cook on them. Whatever mood I'm in. It's fun to uncover and cook on an old daisy wheel 22 with a vintage wooden side table. Definitely a conversation starter. Then there's cooks I'm in the mood for the modern One Touch Gold. Next cook, I might use my 1960s 18.5 kettle. As Brian said, its a fun hobby.

I'm with Brian and Craig. I would just add they are also memory builders especially for those with kids. My earliest weber memory was going to Handyman Hardware and perving the colored mastertouch models. They looked fun and I wondered why we didn't have one, but didn't dare ask because my dad would have said "we already have a bbq"! Which was true because he built a nice old brick one that still stands in my old house today. He even tore it down and moved it once. I still have an original meat hook from it. :'( There I go getting sentimental now. He made a mean t-bone on it back in the day. ;)

Never thought charcoal and porn could make it into the same sentence. A copy of Big'Uns tucked away inside the Statesman...  ;D

I usually cook on one of my Performers.  However,  I used the Smokey Joe Platinum on my last vacation.  Last Valentines day i cooked steaks on my '77 Red 18.5.  I have not cooked on my '73 Smokey Joe or my '69 Avacado three wheeler.

I will cook on the Cado soon.  When the snow melts and the temps get back in the 70's this weekend it might be time to cook my oldest Weber.   I have cooked on my '76 Atlanta Stove Works Cue Cart many times. It is so big it makes a great storage locker for my cooking supply.

I have never heard of the Que Cart.  I wonder if eastex has one or where it is in the pecking order.

I agree with Brian, Craig, Duke, Troy and other WKC members. I have not cooked on all. I started this hobby just this last July. I have acquired, gifted and traded since. I had always had three black 22" in the elements.
I purchased a 26" flat top by accident. It has been used. Can't say that for all, most are waiting to be cleaned and used. I can hardly wait to bring out the Lime and Yellow. I have teased my bride all winter. I will be wearing white tennis shorts, Nike Red Stripes and banded long athletic socks for the first cook...I hope to cook on all of them at some point.

We may need pics of that.

I can't wait to get my own old weber.  Right now I just have a OTS.  We don't get a lot of older webers come up down here in San Antonio.

I really only have one rare Weber and I cook on it regularly! I got rid of the extra grills so I'd rather have a dirty bbq than go hungry.

I am new to collecting them, but I will be using my coca-cola redhead 18.5 when we go camping and will be repairing, cleaning and cooking on my two-tone red.  I have parts on the way to make her extra special.    I use my 22.5 for most of my cooks these days, with some use of my genesis gasser for quick burgers and hot dogs.    My old charcoal go anywhere is collecting dust.  I use my smokey joe as a mini wsm.

Damn....didnt realize I had so many grills...lol

I cook on about 8 of my grills, including the Imperial Sequioa from time to time.  Most of my commonly used grills are my MT's.   My red Performer is a workhorse.  I will be putting my lime ss Performer into the mix soon as well as my red 26!  I have plenty of others that are retired and store bbq supplies in them like Troy does.

There was one in Dallas about a year ago for $20 but it was a moving sale and I couldn't get there in time. It's below a Hasty Bake and above a Strutco ;D

I don't have any really old Webers but I do use my early 1960's Cook N Kettle regularly. I have what I believe to be a early 1950's Portable kitchen grill that I have cooked on but due to it's early design the vents aren't placed to make it work very well. Its a rounded rectangular shape and the intake and exhaust vents are both in the center of the grill. One is toward the front edge of the grill and the other is to the back, this keeps all the air circulating in the middle so the ends of the grill don't heat as well. It was made in Tyler Texas and I've seen pictures of another one made in Tyler that has the vents on each end of the grill like the modern ones. If I found one of those I might let my earlier model go, either to a museum/collector or back to the factory for their museum.
If i get my hands on that 18 Wood dale I've spotted I fully expect to cook on it too.

Okay, that gives me an idea. We should start a thread where we take photos of us cooking on our grills in the style of clothing from the year they were made!

I cook steaks on one of the 18s (I have 3, one is retired 3 wheeler, one is brand new burgundy never used and the other is for steak), the blue 22 is for whole chickens cut up basted with a vinegar sauce cooked up in the kitchen, the 70's red 22 is used for cedar plank salmon, red MT is for ribs, the 26 comes out when I have a party or alot of shit to cook, SJs are for camping (and the 18), green OTG and burgundy SS Performer catch everything in between(they get used the most)...a couple are on the front porch for rainy day cooks...I think I've only had three kettles and a gasser going at the same time during a get together....anyway...sometimes if it's hard to decide what's for supper I buy meat based on which grill I want to fire up......
