Title: What caused this damage?
Post by: tb80 on May 13, 2017, 06:25:51 PM
I came across this in OfferUp. I don't have any interest in it but was surprised at the amount of damage I saw on what appears to be a fairly new grill. Any idea on what could have caused this?  Heat?  I have never seen it that bad before.

looking at the last pic, there appears to be more than a couple spots on the bowl where the color has popped off and rust around the leg mounts as well as a good bit of rust on the one-touch handle. were i forced to venture a guess, i'd say that grill was blown over by the wind onto some rocks and left upside down/tipped over for a while. as ugly as it is, i believe it could be saved with some steel wool, elbow grease, high temp primer and high temp engine paint. not sure what caused the large patch of damage though.

My guess is a whole bag of charcoal and a whole can of lighter fluid..
Or it was deliberate?

I'm always in the market. but an hour is just about my Max driving distance unless it's something incredible and even then it would have to be pretty freaking sweet

I would say it was hauled in a truck, still assembled and on it's side.

The grill realized it had a butt light logo on it, so it decided to strip itself of its porcelain in an effort to cleanse its soul and be reborn a real beer logod grill

Banking the coals on that side repeatedly, I've seen it before

I've banked coals repeatedly for a long time in my ots. No damage yet. Maybe I'm just getting lucky.

I think the damage looks mechanical.

I believe you. That's why I make an effort to protect the bowls on my desirable kettles.

I see a lot more porcelain damage on colored kettles than on black ones. The damage caused by the banking of coals or exposure to high heat on colored kettles (resulting in warranty claims) may be why Weber is reluctant to produce a variety of colors now.
