I can't stand it anymore. I LOVE Weber charcoal grills. I LOVE their quirky Customer Service.
But I cannot stand the taco handle. It just isn't right. It besmirches a lovely work of American Art and Design.
Therefore, I feel it is incumbent upon me to start
The He-Man Taco Handle Haters Club!
Who's with me!?!
Take the TH-MTHHC oath:
(hand over heart please)
"I, (state name here), a member of good standing of the He-Man Taco Handle-Haters Club, do solemnly swear to be a he-man and hate taco handles and not play with them or touch them unless I have to and especially never fall in love and, if I do, may I die slowly and painfully and suffer for hours or until I scream bloody murder."

I'm in. Weber history is now divided into two eras: BT and AT. The closest I've come to owing a taco is my 26er that has a mini taco mounted to a welded handle. But never a bolt-on taco for me. As a designer, I feel the profession lost a little credibility the day it was introduced.
I'm definitely in this category! I loathe the taco

I am also not a big fan of the taco handles but do own many due to new colors. Weber will never go back to old welded handles but older handle strap that can be bolted would be nice. Even better if they can offer us purist a metal handle (MLH) that can be bolted would be nice.

Topper was the Weber mascot in the 50's. He is going to be featured on this grill.
Okay. Full disclosure, I prefer the welded strap handle. I also prefer the old stronger non flip cooking grates of the 1960s-1990s. Having said that, they aren't coming back! The taco handle is a natural progression in lid handle technology so to speak. In the 50s it was bare metal handles, 60s it was walnut lid handles, 80s it was all three walnut/teak handles. The 2000s it was nylon/plastic. What was the next step? The bowl straps were lengthened in 2010 and the taco handle (already on the Euro kettles since 2009 or so) came to the 26er in 2010 and finally all kettle sizes in 2015. I anticipate a shield of some sorts coming to the bowl handles in the next 10 years or so. I for one WILL be getting a Topper red kettle! Lock, stock and taco!
Oh! I didn't know that. Ok, cool. I'm going to go back to eating my paint chips now..

Getting off topic. But exactly.
bottom line everyone has an opinion, there will always be a divide. tomato, ta'mato both do the same thing, both lift the lid, both work.
One is just ugly. But Topper will be mine. Oh yes, she will be mine.

How do we determine the age of a Ranch? (apologies to myself for hijacking the thread)
I am more disappointed that the Taco is cross-ways to the vent, Major departure from the classic 22. I don't like the taller handles. More twisting moment exerted on that porcelain surface. One could countersink a tapered head screw and file it off smooth and you couldn't tell it was bolted, Add some correct color paint and you wouldn't know it was not welded on. I like the silver metal handle re-bent to the to the classic shape. I don't mind the screw heads showing. That is strong metal in that Taco strap. If you rock the shield back and forth when you remove it from the handle it deforms the bottom surface. If you put it back on it can chip the porcelain. I have a small chip it my black Master Touch lid. Lucky it's under the handle and you don't see it. Bottom line is either it is worth accepting it like it comes and working from there or it isn't. I would be willing to accept a Taco handle lid kettle if it had Dark Blue or a good Yellow porcelain.

I'm with you, here. My beef more so is that the handle and vent were reoriented back to pre 1963 style. If your kettle does not have a lid bale then it is rather cumbersome to hang the lid on the bowl. Before 1963, in the metal lid handle era, the vent was parallel to the handle like today except for that the lid hook was OPPOSITE the vent on the other side of the handle. I am 100% confident that the 1963 change to the handle turning TOWARDS the vent and the lid hook moving under the vent was to make lid removal and hanging on the bowl more user friendly. I can handle the taco handle. I just wish they hadn't changed the setup back to the handle being turned "away" from the vent again. Maybe that's how they get people to upsell into an Master Touch or a Performer model? It could be a marketing strategy of sorts. Who knows.. Incidentally, the 18.5 kettle has ALWAYS had the lid handle turned parallel or "away" from the lid vent but the 18 lid is not as cumbersome to stow on the bowl as a 22 or 26 would be w/o a lid bale.
HAVING SAID THAT...... I won't turn down a pre 1963 metal lid handle (Wood Dale, IL. era) kettle if one were to ever come available.
Wow. didn't know that. I feel better about my newer kettles now knowing they are similar to the old ones. My 18 helped me get used to the turned handle also.

Taco Handles, meh not a big deal to me.
Only thing I like about the taco is it makes all the older welded handle black ots 22 and 18 suddenly more desirable and we shouldn't run out of a used market on those for awhile yet.

And also to TD's point, the handle to vent relationship I like much better on the old 22's

Ahhhh......I sense some amongst us are beginning to cross over to the TACO side!!! Weakness in the heart for all things Weber in this case will get you more TACO!!!!! So cut the weakness from your chests my friends. Look to Mr Lemans and his Ranchero example for strength if you have to but do give in to that which is THE TACO.
Mr Zavod may have given himself over to the power of the TACO but we can maybe save him. He has skills which must be preserved.
Alright, it's no longer a secret ...

Be a Weber Whiner (http://weberkettleclub.com/forums/weber-kettles-accessories/be-a-weber-winner-in-1983!/) in 2017! :o :P ;)
I can't wait to hear all the whining when Topper arrives, and everyone starts bashing it. You know they will. Cheap foreign steel, flimsy legs, thin porcelain - if it even is porcelain. For the same money, (half if you catch the WallyWorld end-of-season sale) you can get a beautiful new MT with baskets, warming rack and gourmet grate. And if you ask nice like I did, you can swap out the taco lid with a welded display lid before you leave the store. Plenty of retailers have not changed out their display units since the taco truck showed up. WLH forever!

I'm excited for Topper myself and will be getting one this fall. Taco handle and all. I am also looking forward to Zavod44s rendition of the wooden Topper handles to boot! Back to the subject at hand, this thread proves my theory that some people aren't happy unless they are complaining or upset about something. Weber could make a replica thumbscrew MBH from the 1960s today and someone would find something about it to complain about. Weber is listening and doing what they can to bring back the iconic red kettle and there are still people not happy about it. Blows my mind. It's like when my work provides FREE food at an early morning meeting, someone always bitches. If it's donuts, someone whines that there isn't any fruit or yogurt or vice versa. I've seen it happen too many times. Not to label anyone as a malcontent but it has been in my experience that some people aren't happy unless they are pissed off. That's just my opinion, I could be wrong......
And that's not to say that people can't have opinions one way or another. We all do. There's things that we all like and dislike about these grills to one degree or another and that's fine. If we all loved the same style, color and size of Kettle this would be a pretty boring place, which it is NOT and for that I am grateful.

I am with all the believers. It has a function, and does it well. Weber did their homework and figured out how to eliminate burned hands. WTF folks?! What is so terrible about a new design?! You don't like it because it looks different? Guess what. You'll look different in a few years.
Jeezus.
Do we hate the look?
The feel?
The function?
The change?
The name?
I don't know if I should hate it.
I've never touched one.

That was one of my favorite bits on SNL with Dana Carvey back in the day.
Tacos deface the iconic weber lid. That's why they are hated. However, the old ones wouldn't be special if they were identical to new ones so I will embrace the taco and may even buy the topper if I like it.

I'm happy to report that membership in the H-MTHHC has topped 100 while donations exceed $1000!
Plans are now underway for the inaugural GRILLIN AND CHILLIN BASH THE TACO HANDLE SUMMER BASH! Location and date will be nailed down very soon, so keep checking those inboxes.
There will a blues band, and all members toting a Blue 22 will receive 5 free (normally $5 ea.) raffle tickets for the Super Special Drawing- one lucky grillfella/gal will be blindfolded, handed a metal baseball bat, and be pointed in the direction of a "Weber Original Kettle" pinata filled with cool grilling accessories!
So that a splendid time can be guaranteed for all, no pets, kids, chumps.
BYOB, BYOBBQ, BYOWHWK
More details to come!
