Title: Gen II Performer Appreciation Thread
Post by: 56MPG on April 01, 2017, 08:28:21 AM
Lets show off our Gen II Performers - the best Weber ever built!

Happy to have a black Gen II again, thanks to @hawgheaven Spent some time this morning cleaning it up. I had a spare NIB bowl, thanks to another WKC member, so in it went. Need a burner bracket, igniter, tilt-out bin and a steel table. Will be calling Weber later today. Removed the ugly warning label on the front panel. (The flip-up igniter cover is back in place after I took this shot.) Mounted 8" whitewalls in place of the ugly stock wheels. (Had to add 1/2" spacers.) Working on the lid now. I have a NIB cover squirreled away. With luck I'll be in business next weekend.

We will have to agree to disagree about the wheels, I really like the gen 2 wheels.

Of the non-SSPs, I like the Gen2 w/ metal table upgrade the best. Love that slotted metal piece. Still not sure about the wheels, though. Some days like, some days don't.

I added a new wider lid bale, lid and metal table.

Removing that instruction decal from the front sounds like a good idea. I wonder if I can order a new decal to mount on the back panel. I'll call weber..

I'm enjoying mine and love the slotted stainless front opposed to the newer models. I like the white walls but I can see where some would go with the classic wheel.

Gen II performers are the best, throw a metal table on and you have the perfect grill.

Alright, I'll play...
My blacked out gen 2, totally stole the idea from Matt (with permission of course)
I love the carbon fiber wrap, but seeing all these SS front panels with the metal table has me thinking I should take it off...?

I have a 2007 model that I bought used a few years ago.  I upgraded to the metal table.  The lid was dented in at the top but I was able to pop it out for the most part.  The lid handle is still kind of bent though.

@Antisven84 love the twins, just curious why you mounted these with the kettle brackets under the SS panel. Looks good, but isn't the panel lifted up on the left?

This was a throw away black Performer with a caved in lid and a cracked table. Pop out the lid, a little paint, a new table, and it's my most used. Best deal around. Lives outside in the elements.

Best color of the high temp paints and single application. Holding up well.

I can help with the dark green.  This was the one I used for the Performer Table Restoration article.  It has since left my foster care and moved on to a new owner.

@56MPG  @I don't think it is a down under thing.  Although I never noticed the difference, several of both styles have gone through my foster care.  Here is another Gen 2 I am working on that has the "full metal jacket".  The green one above has the cut out style panels. Maybe a design or supplier change of the panel manufacturer?

Red was never offered in Gen2 so kind of special to have Red Gen2. Keep in mind, that Red Gen1 bowl handle shows thru. the large gap on Gen 2 table. Blue Gen1 SSP already stock.

I also have a fully restored Red SSP and still working on Gen2 all stainless steel table C&B Lime I am thinking about switching. No Gap on Gen2 SS table so no bowl handle showing for me.

Go ahead and try it out and see if you like it. As for me, not sure yet.

Just looked back at the first Gen II I had, and it's a FMJ version; DO(2005) kettle. My new Gen II is a DZ (2008). Maybe the earlier Gen IIs were all FMJs?

By the way, if you have a chance to swap in a red like I did, I highly recommend it! The new table would make it even better!

Thanks Travis!  Yes that's mine.  I found it on Craigslist in Berkeley, Ca.  It was buried in some guys garage and falling apart. Fortunately the bowl and lid were in excellent shape.  Took me almost 5 hours round trip to drive 40 miles and get it, gotta love Bay Area traffic!

@JordanW  & @thinkblue . I just picked my DZ code blue yesterday. Great shape-just needs a little spit & polish.
Nice

Just looked back at the first Gen II I had, and it's a FMJ version; DO(2005) kettle. My new Gen II is a DZ (2008). Maybe the earlier Gen IIs were all FMJs?

By the way, if you have a chance to swap in a red like I did, I highly recommend it! The new table would make it even better!

Just a reminder that I still have several sets of 22.5" brackets available that will fit any 22.5" kettle to any Performer frame. Ideally a Master Touch, but a vintage Yellow would look so cool in this frame. Who's first to do an Ivory or Smoke?

Very good IPA by the way. Only need Koa rollers and this restore is done. Here's a black view. Removed one more label to complete the look I was looking for.  I call her Gen Gen, an indirect nod to Gen II, but really after a sweet little black cat we had a while back. Her real name was General, but she only answered to Gen Gen - that is, when she chose to answer at all. This Gen Gen will be answering the call frequently.

^^^ Thank you! Only few small things to do. So far so good! I am trying to keep it real simple with a polished aluminum end cap. I may delete gas assist on this one. Weber badge from SSP and a special edition logo on front and that's it. All under mount so no bolt head shows. It will be nice and strong when done.

I just found me a solid heavy duty commercial grade stainless steel that I will be cutting up and doing another performer before this. I am really excited, so I have to tackle this new project first.

If memory serves, you would have to modify the bowl in order to do gas assist.  If that is the case, I would skip it.  Either way, it is a beauty.

It actually has a gas assist. I thought about hiding the tank but decided to block off the bowl and keep it simple. Thanks!

Here is the other Gen2/Gen3 hybrid I was talking about.  One piece 304 grade stainless steel table build. Almost finished. Had a hell of time cutting as it is about 3 times thick as the SSP table thickness.

I tried it with a jig saw like on my Green one, but due to the thickness, it just wasn't cutting it. Yes, I ended up using the angle grinder. Not as a pretty cut as with the jig saw. My Jig saw cut on the Green was like a lazer cut. This one not so much.

The table is all done and mounted. Just need to take all the tape off, clean, and put Zav handles and I am done with this one.

Here is one very similar. https://www.uline.ca/Product/Detail/H-1135-SSTOP/Packing-Tables/Replacement-Table-Top-60-x-30-Stainless-Steel?pricode=YA692&gadtype=pla&id=H-1135-SSTOP&gclid=CIDF14CHntMCFQ4waQodFlgOEg&gclsrc=aw.ds

Everytime I see these pics, it makes me regret giving my gen2 blue to my brother.

Just got my Gen 2 Crate and barrel performer.  Cleaned it up pretty well but still has some rust/knicks on the lid.  Thinking about getting a replacement gen 3 lid.

Thoughts on the difference between the thermometer in the lid vs the handle?  Which do you all prefer?

Here is a gen 2 I owned for about a month. I picked it up for $50, with a Weber cover, and gave it to my friend as a home warming gift. I'd love to score a Performer for myself one day. Got my eyes on a Red SSP

Perhaps a slight preference for the old style.

The old style places the tip nearer the vent, making it more useful (accurate) in my opinion for the typical indirect cook. And also, you can remove it and use it as a leave-in meat thermometer, or swap it into an old Genesis.

The 3rd Gen thermometer could be easier to see and therefore to read. But neither will be accurate to grate temp.

I like the one in the handle, just something classy looking to me

LOL I'm loving that the handle says PETA and so much meat is cooked on these things.

Would any of these qualify as gen2?

This thread is what made me piece together my blue performer!  2nd gen blue, metal table, pulled front sticker, ssp wheels, large lid bale. My baby. Daily cooker.

Plus I found this gem, 2005 with a full metal jacket,  only cooked on a couple times. I deep cleaned it, but havent had the heart to cook on it yet...

( side note, i have had 3 different 2005 models,  all 3 had a full metal jacket.)

Just picked this up today.
Insanely grimey in the inside.
Sitting in the garage until I have a free weekend to put in some work.

@bear probably my favorite of all the performer colors.  Funny this thread popped up today as I scored a blue Gen 2 over the weekend.  I've got it torn apart for some cleaning and RRR in the garage.
