I'll post my new version and see if anyone can guess what I used. Feel free to jump in with your version once the last one is guessed. Doing wings so I'll also post the results

Looks like stock baskets with the flat side cut off and then either pop rivet or screwed together.

You got it! The performer I bought came with only these pieces and not the whole baskets. All baskets have a hole in them in the top of each side front and back. Never noticed that before and don't know why but I didn't even have to drill a hole. Just bolted them together. They are working well so far. This is 30 minutes in.

This configuration gives more grill real estate than the traditional basket method.

He is a guy on a few facebook groups that always post pictures of smokers he has made by cutting the bottom out of kettles then mount them onto metal drums. He post pictures of his creation so much that he tricks you into liking the idea of cutting up a kettle!!!!

Cool. Could you could tell if this also made for a hotter grill?

It made for a less hot grill and my cook time increased by at least 15 minutes. This is because I reduced the circumference and was able to fit less coals. In my opinion, the shape of the vortex has nothing to do with it. It's strictly the amount of coals concentrated in the center, or banked for that matter as long as they are all lit.

Is that a 14.5 WSM charcoal ring sir?
I've only ever used mine in the dark of night for that purpose...looks fine in the light of day too.

Close! I cut down an 18.5 when I bought the Cajun Bandit SS ring for my smoker. A 14.5 ring would work well.
