Okay, so I was just checking out eBay, which I keep telling myself I need to stop doing, and I found a NIB flat top 26. At least it sure looks like it is.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Weber-One-Touch-26-3-4-034-Classic-Charcoal-Kettle-Grill-Black-NEW-in-BOX-/371869071107?hash=item56951fb703%3Ag%3AYLsAAOSwr%7ElYpe9s&nma=true&si=SsjskSDP4Esvo82bFm7QmE%252F95bw%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Weber-One-Touch-26-3-4-034-Classic-Charcoal-Kettle-Grill-Black-NEW-in-BOX-/371869071107?hash=item56951fb703%3Ag%3AYLsAAOSwr%7ElYpe9s&nma=true&si=SsjskSDP4Esvo82bFm7QmE%252F95bw%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557)
It was a Buy It Now Best Offer and my offer got accepted immediately. Makes me wonder if I could have gotten it cheaper. Anyway, it's NIB so I'm pretty excited.
Here's my dilemma. I just bought a new 26 a couple of months ago that I haven't even used yet. I'm debating whether I want to sully this baby (the flat top) and cook on it. It seems like it would be sad to cook on it, but maybe even more sad not to. My thought is go ahead and use it and sell the new 26 to help fund this totally impulsive purchase. Otherwise, I could keep it as a looker and keep the new 26 for cooking. Oh what to do, what to do?
Thoughts?
I can't wait to see it congrats on the score. as far as what do, I have nothing.
My thought is, you have $450.00 into it. Maybe you get lucky and get $700.00 for it in a few years. Who cares? That thing is awesome. Start cooking and enjoy it :)
Hey, you asked for an opinion lol
That's a great find. Congrats, and can't wait to see pics!!!

Cook on it and sell the new one if the grate is good.
Awesome score! I say cook on it!
Those flattops are super classy. Personally the flattop lid makes me smile more so I think I would use that over the new 26r. Congrats!
Everyone seems to be pointing me in the direction I was already headed. This just makes me even more excited to cook on it. Man I hope it makes it here okay. I asked them to open it up and add extra packing just in case. Fingers crossed!
Keep and cook on that beauty. You'll be glad you did. CONGRATS
The new one has a bucket right? Well that one is for windy days and the new one isn't. Cook on and keep both. Bingo.
What MrHoss said. If you have the space and don't need the $ then keep both is the best answer.

It's purpose, it's destiny, is to cook. Not to fulfill it's destiny would be illogical.
Definitely cook. It'll make ya smile when you fire her up. Hell, invite friends over, fire up the flattop and ice down the other for beers

So with regard to space, my wife is starting to notice. So space is becoming an issue.
With regard to money, I could use the money. This was a bit of an impulse buy.
Quick question to anyone who knows. I thought I've heard that the grate size is different for the flat tops. Is that the case?
Thanks.

Yes, they are slightly smaller than the newer version. I believe just under 25" for the flat top cook grate. Not sure what the newer 26r cook grate measures....
I can think of a landing place for the new one if you decide to part with it. 😎

I agree with Hoss and kettlebb and say keep both. They are both different kettles. But if I was in your situation, I'd take the flat top and sell the new 26er. If you ever regretted selling and wanted it back.... always easier to get another new 26er than the other way around. Besides, as much as I love to have a new 26er, given a choice I would prefer to own and cook on the flat top more.
Keep the flattop. Its easy to get a new one, hard to find a great classic, especially NIB

@mcgolden No need to return it. There is room in there to raise the grate with expanded steel to make room. You can even use a new, larger grate that way. Here is an old post from

The expanded metal rests perfectly on the grate holders and raises the cook grate @3" to the top of the bowl. I used some expando wired to a charcoal rail and another length arched to corral the fuel.

Looks like he had to modify / drill the grill to do it. I couldn't bare to do it on this baby. I've got other smoking options, or I could use fire bricks or some other type of setup if I need to. Just wish it fit.
I'm pretty sure that it's just a ring that sits on top of the grate support tabs. The bolts that you see are to hold pieces of the metal mesh together.
@swamprb is that correct?
Not to divert the focus of this thread away from a fantastic score of a beautiful grill (I have an EO 26er as well and really appreciate this find for that reason), but if appearance wasn't a concern I'm sure that the 26" SNS COULD fit in this grill without modification, but the grate would be caddywampus, sloping to one side. As McGolden stated previously, there are several EXCELLENT ways to still use this grill as a smoker (two fire bricks are just as good, imo), it just sux that the SNS doesn't fit.
Unless I'm missing something, there are several easy ways to make the sns work. One side of the grate would rest on the sns and the other side could be supported by a couple of carriage bolts to the charcoal grate. Or a brick or whatever.

The grate brackets on older 26ers are shorter than the modern 26er brackets, so the SnS doesn't fit between the older brackets. It would have to be setup away from the bowl sides; not unworkable, but not as intended to be used by the owner.

If that's the case, keeping the modern 26 is the easy answer. It would be very difficult to give up that older beauty. So difficult that I would keep it too.

HoosierKettle is right. I checked during lunch and the SNS would have to sit away from the wall where it's encroaching into the middle of the grill. Between that and having to raise up the grate, it just doesn't seem worth it. Not a huge deal. I tested some firebricks I had, and they fit perfectly on their side between the charcoal and cooking grates. So I'm either going to sell my SNS XL to the guy who's buying my 26 or put it up for sale.
One of the reasons I liked the SNS is that it keeps the lit coals directly off the side of the grill, vs. separating via fire bricks. But I'm guessing that for a slow cook it won't be that much heat and the grill should handle it just fine. If anyone has any thoughts on this...
My personal opinion is if I go for a 26er it won't be a flat top. I've seen posts like this and how they differ from the newer style. Replacement grates aren't as easily available and such. I think in this case for me newer would be better than vintage. You can get almost anything for a 22" for the oldies. I love my SnS and even in low and slow I'd refrain from banking coals against the bare bowl. This is all just my thoughts and opinion. Ultimately do what makes you happy and keep the one that cooking on is more enjoyable. Good luck man.

I enjoy cooking on the Flat-Tops more than the new OTG's, I mean if you have one, slight mods are a given-like raising the cook grate level. I mean wtf? How hard is that? If an sns not fitting is the only holdback you are doing yourself a great disservice and missing out on utilizing a good cooker.
Banking coals on my RED 26'r won't happen. I don't see a sns in my future, so I've made my own hillbilly version from expando.

The divider is removable for short or longer cooks as needed.
Since I have the Cajun Bandit ring, the Rib-O-Lator expanding tray works great for quantity cooks, a Weber 9891 (EZ-Que) cradle rotisserie for the gassers fit it perfectly, and I recently acquired a Broil-Master Hugga-Rack rotisserie unit that brings some more fun to the game. I guess I'm just a kettlekweer when it comes to mods.

My original request was to have them make me a copper 26'er :) Unfortunately that didn't work out. :(
@mcgolden - something you might consider... I have an OT 26 flat top. On mine , the bowl handles are a bit loose, and a couple of the leg sockets are iffy. I love the look and heft of the flat top lid, so I don't want to replace it. My goal is to find a newer 26 bowl and just swap out the lid. That way I get the enclosed ash pan, lid bale, higher cook grate, but I get to keep the flat top lid.
That might be a solution to allow you to keep the SNS, and still get rid of one of the 26ers.....
...would love to see a pic of how that looks, if you wouldn't mind... ;D 8)

I've reserved myself to the fact that I don't need to use the SNS on this. I've got so many other options for smoking (22" SNS, Smoke EZ, Pellet Smoker), I can live without it. But thanks for the suggestion.

I have it on good authority that Weber wanted nothing to do with my NOS blue '79 MBH 22 when its previous owner at the time contacted Weber but that was back in 2009. Maybe they'd have a different opinion today but having said that, I have ZERO intention of getting rid of my blue. It's a family heirloom now. I say cook on it and enjoy it. Or make it a display piece and it could hold spare handles, Weber memorabilia, vintage catalogs etc.

I'm pretty sure I'll be keeping it and cooking on it. But if Weber offers me something awesome, I'd consider it. If not, I'll still be very happy

It pretty much all depends on what they have and what they want for their collection.
So a lot has happened since my last post. On the advice of the WKC I contacted Weber Customer Support and they did show some interest in my grill. Initially, after sending them some pics, they offered me a Performer Deluxe. I politely thanked them but informed them that I have three. So, again on the advice of my WKC brethren, I swung for the fences. I informed the very nice lady that I had been dealing with that if they were willing to give me either a Summit Charcoal or a Ranch kettle, I would personally deliver my grill to their Paltine, IL location. I assumed I would be quickly shot down but...

I got in the car early this morning and took the 4 hour drive from Cedar Rapids and dropped it off. My new Ranch should be delivered this week. Here's a couple more pics from the day.

Had to have my Italian beef while I was in town.

So now I'll have the Ranch I've always wanted but probably never could have justified buying.
Fun part of the story. The lady I was dealing with told me to leave the grill with the guard with this little bit of info.
"Just bring the grill and box inside, and the guard will deliver it to Jim Stephen's office. He is the son of our founder, George!"
So I felt that was really cool. Apparently it's going to end up in one of the restaurants so it will be appreciated by the masses. I will definitely miss the flat top but I think overall I did pretty well. Thanks to everyone for all the input / help.

They didn't. I was trying to get the Summit because it would have fit in my SUV for the ride back. But they said they could only do the Ranch (not sure why) and they would ship it to me. I'm actually cool with that because the Summit would have a bit more overlap with my performers and other kettles. This way I have a beast for big party / extended family cooks.

It's simple really. An old grill is worth X on the market. In your case let's say 500 bucks. So you want a Ranch that retails for 1200 bucks. That Ranch probably costs them less than 500 bucks to make. Besides... What Jim Stephan wants, Jim Stephen gets!!!
Congrats on getting a ranch.
