Has anyone used wood only? No lump no charcoal
At all ! I don't see why it wouldn't work.
Would take a lot of tending. I would also imagine more ash than it can handle.
I don't think you'll be able to get enough air in there to get a good burn with the wood. I think it would be a creosote engine.

My kettle fire pit uses only wood .... So, yes, it works. :D :D

Oooops, sorry .... Your question is for WSMs ... I gotta lay off the whiskey before posting. ??? :D ;)
@Lemans , why not give it a go and report back to us with your experience. Don't know if you don't try.
Keep in mind that the WSM is designed to be a charcoal smoker, not a stick burner.
I agree that there probably isn't enough air flow to burn sticks, but no reason not to try.

this would be an interesting thing to test. You can also use a OT base with the WSM midsection and top for more airflow.
@Lemans Many ATC's use a small fan to excite the charcoal within the pit. You should be able to use the same arrangement to circulate as much air as you want to keep a wood fire glowing even w/o the temp probe part of the equation ???
SJ
Do it....and see if you can get the outside wall of the middle section to glow red:
