Title: PSA- Don't use oven cleaner on the exterior of the Genesis
Post by: pbe gummi bear on November 25, 2016, 08:59:35 AM
Bad things will happen.  :'( This grill was near perfect before this.

Maybe just never use it for anything?

I've never had a problem with it until now as I use it liberally on my kettles. I'll def reconsider that policy now.

Yeah, I am not a fan of that stuff anyway, I hope you were able to recover that issue well.

Silver high heat spray paint fix it. It's a little lighter than the frame's grey but looks OK I was more annoyed that a 1hr cleanup turned into a full night of grill teardown/repaint/reassembly. I gave this one to a friend as a housewarming gift.

@pbe gummi bear, is oven cleaner ok to use on the inside of the cooking basket and lid, as well as the cast iron grates?  I just picked up a free green EP-320 that is pretty cruddy on the inside.  I wanted to do a full restore on it too.

Also, my Genesis doors don't stay close. Is there a magnet on these doors that is missing on my unit?  Can you post a pic where your magnet is?

I think there is a weak magnet to hold the doors but I don't own a Genesis anymore. It was a housewarming gift for a friend. I wouldn't go anywhere close to the Genesis with oven cleaner anymore because of overspray. If you must, then remove the parts you want cleaned from the grill. Like the grates, lid, etc. Also don't use it on aluminum and regularly painted parts.

@crumbsnatcher

There should be two magnets on the bottom shelf, one for each door.  See pic:

Thanks Steve!  I looked at mine and the magnets are actually on the door. Appears they rusted out and the prev owner just pulled them out.

I have gone to all bio cleaners if I can not clean it with Simple Green it must be really bad.
Scrape , brush, spray , repeat rinse very well. Then I heat up the whole grill to max for awhile 20 minutes or so then let cool down inspect.

Lawrence, do you happen to have a picture of the restored grill with the freshly painted cookbox/lid and frame?  I'm contemplating repainting a recently acquired Genesis S-320 and wanted to see what color high heat paint you went with and how it looks.  Rustoleum seems to have 2 high heat silverish grey colors.  One is matte and the other is glossy.  Which one did you happen to go with?

Don't think I have any pics of it, but I repainted the lid and control panel end caps and lower grill box with Gloss black high heat Ultra and it looked pretty good.   Skin color on the Genny was Smoke Grey.

It was definitely the silvery non-glossy one. It almost looks like blasted aluminum. @crumbsnatcher
