Title: Scott Zee's generosity "blue" my mind
Post by: Mr.CPHo on November 21, 2016, 06:24:32 PM
I'm very grateful to @Scott Zee who reached out to me several weeks ago and offered to sell his blue 18.5".   I've been looking for a blue 18.5" for many months now and I'm honored that Scott would separate his pair of matching blue "DU" codes.  During our text message exchange, he mentioned he used it a lot for cast iron cooking, and I promised I would give it a good home.

Here are some pics Scott sent me while I waited for it to arrive.(http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161122/9fe1ebb83555cc152a4035c7dd2304c7.jpg)(http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161122/24e8f588952ee54fc82f0596b6f2a2ea.jpg)(http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161122/f818bbe6a4a25e9e81395a4ed543c2b8.jpg)
This last photo gave me an idea.(http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161122/5d4d9c6b4536be463709e6662f364d3a.jpg)
Here it is moments after it arrived on my doorstep.(http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161122/2bf1271c11cd6e09c449bc3f9c8f10ae.jpg)(http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161122/e2bb149d25fef3c628019618fca0ecfe.jpg)
I was really grateful to get an original box for an 18.5" because I've been thinking about breaking down my "A" code 18.5" redhead and storing it away to give to my kids someday.  (I don't have any kids but now I have heirlooms).  Thanks again for the box, Scott!

The grill was already super clean, I didn't have to do a thing.  I only added a set of old wooden handles I'd taken off a donor grill and restored.(http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161122/79736a145a6cd04047c856739de9564b.jpg)

I started socializing the new grill with his new family.  (I think the darker blue is harder to photograph)(http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161122/1319f177e01d6c7290a091046df0274f.jpg)(http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161122/eeb89da7c1c4f10886eed1d23faed2ac.jpg)(http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161122/f7cab7b47280314218104f6a5d964f02.jpg)
Scott's comments regarding cast iron reminded me that I hadn't seasoned some of my pots, pans, or craycorts in awhile.  I figured I'd show the new blue he's in good hands by doing a little cast iron maintenance while cooking mojo pork.
The marinade is orange juice, lime juice, cumin, salt, oregano, and garlic. After braising 3 hours @ 275F in a dutch oven, I put it into a roasting pan and added a full lit chimney and roasted another 2.5 hours @ 350F to get those nice crispy bits.(http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161122/b5d41221098259babe9415bd746aa1a2.jpg)(http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161122/f1761bc4fc42579a06ac9c289fca60ce.jpg)(http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161122/6a070da008c529b1664580ddac79cdd4.jpg) The bone pulled out with little resistance.  Sorry no pics of plated food, but we had it with basic black beans and rice that night, and made burritos tonight with the leftovers.

Thanks again, Scott.  I'm sorry it took me awhile to post, but I wanted to do it right!

@Mr.CPHo,  Thanks for the kind words. First cook pics look fabulous. I know you'll love that BabyBlue and give her a great home. She already looks at home with the family. Looks nice with the wood handles too. Thanks to everyone else as well, this is a great community we have here. Like I said while we were texting, what goes around comes around and the kettle karma is alive and well.   PEACE,  Scott             8)

Really cool to see the kettle love being spread around this place.  Congrats on your new grill.  Handles look nice on it and it fits right in at its new home.  Love these pics:

Congrats on getting a blue 18.5! I just picked up a EE blue 18.5 a while back for $20 and it was a mile from my house. My 7 yr old granddaughter said " It's just my size, I want to learn how to grill!" So it will be hers.

My daughter (4 at the time) said the same thing when we found our Ei code black 18" at a garage sale 2 houses down. That's cool, bud.
