Title: Attn: NIB Black SJ Owners (SJ Model Number History)
Post by: Neil_VT00 on October 19, 2016, 10:00:04 AM
@Bob BQ and I got into a discussion about Black SJS model numbers and were trying to determine what those numbers are and when they changed.  If you have a NIB Black SJ please post (or send me) a picture of the box that has the model number as well as a picture of the vent with the date code.

My goal here is to find enough NIB SJ's to figure out the date changes and also to provide a reference to ID SJs in online listings with minimal pictures.

Here is what we have found regarding Smokey Joe Silvers:
Up to 1974 ------------- SJ-100 - Model number appears in '62, '64, '66, '68, '71, '72, '73, and '74 catalogs (offset handle models).
1975 to 1976 ---------- Unknown - Have seen a SJ-100 box that is not an offset handle and no date stamp meaning SJ-100 could run through 1976
1977 to 1983 ---------- 10001 - 1977 from Harris92 seen in post #2. 1979 Catalog shows the three wire leg setup with 10001 model number (as does 1981 catalog). 1983 (E-Code) box with 10001 (first year of loop legs).
?1984? ------------------ 10001 / 50012 - Box with 1982 Copyright and Palatine, ILL. location marking. In 1984 Weber moved to Palatine.
1985 - Unknown ------ 50012 - 1985 (G-Code) through sometime before M-Code (1990)
Unknown - 1999 - 10001 - Have Seen 1990 (M-Code) and 1997 (EI-Code) boxes with this model number.
2000 - Present --- 10020 - Changed when plastic handles were added in 2000.

Here is what we have found regarding Smokey Joe Golds:
1989-1999 --------------40001 - 1990 & 1998 confirmed.  No indication of other model numbers in existence.
2000-present -----------40020 - Potentially changed when plastic handles were added in 2000.
Much less information for SJG's except for a couple of miscellaneous boxes shown below.

Found an old post from @harris92. Looks like the model number 10001 was used in 1977 (original post updated).

Bumping this one back to the first page.  I've added more boxes and what little information I have about SJG model numbers.

@Bob BQ do you have any better info on the SJG date change?

Thanks! Just got a SJ yesterday with a wood handle and legs that don't loop all the way so I'm guessing it's for the ash tray which it doesn't have. Also F stamped on top vent. 83-85?

Further research.  Leg/loops seem unable to hold a ash pan. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170716/8e82aded085213f9ceec38d178249d9f.jpg)

I was also leaning towards 83-85. Interesting little unit. Never used one before. Thanks Darko

Just received this in the mail and hoping it was a birth year kettle of 1982 :(  Opened it up and find a G code but the box is different the ones you posted.

Is that is the one listed in WV for $20? On Facebook marketplace I think.

@mdb240 Thanks for your input, I added your box to the original post. It's interesting that Weber had 4 different boxes with the 1982 copyright.

@harris92 That's a beauty.  Do you have the box/model #?

Nope.  I have seen a '62 in person.  The '62 has a rounded lid handle.  This one is squared.  Also, the '62 lid handle attachment point is rounded.  Again, this one is squared.  The big difference:  "62 has three bowl exhausts and vents.  This smokey only has one.

Hard to tell from the catalog pic.  Do you happen to know if your '56 was the same model #?
