There will be a new page on the main site coming very soon!
Hey Troy, I figured as much! Let me know if you want me to help compile any other similar pages.
If I think of other good reference material that might be useful, I'll post it and you can add it as a main page or ignore it. :)
I love having this here. Very easy for me to find. We should take it back older that this too, try to figure out the BAR-B-QUE KETTLES. I have a bunch of old grills I can take pictures of the vents, as well as other people here. Maybe we should try to get a picture of every vent wheel we can. The old ones right through the date codes. Might be cool. I'll take pictures tonight.
Brian
Brian, that is EXACTLY what I wanted to do. (I can't help in this regard of the older vents as I have no specimens, but can of course help compile and fill in gaps.)
Double Post
Very nice indeed! :)
Thanks for this. Just found out my Weber is 10 years old.
Okay here's a start. I'll get these pictures to troy so maybe we can have these on the main site as a permanent record. Just went out in the backyard and here's what I got in chronological order....
pre-patent pending so it is between 1963 and 1967?

Brian
damn great job!
G$, take a look at this and let me know what needs to get fixed.
Determining the age of weber grills page (http://weberkettleclub.com/determine-age-of-old-grill/)
Everyone go look and see what holes you can fill, we need a picture of every year. I even want a Wood Dale wheel. I saw a metal handle around here a few months back. . I might have an 85' but I took it off my 26". I kept the wheel somewhere, I' gotta go look.

Brian
Great job guys!
Brian, you have all my years covered except 1999 (EE) which I have pasted below. Sorry for the bad quality, I will snap another but we should standardize on 800x600 as well:
I'm gonna ultimately send them all to Troy and he can do what he likes with the size. I wanted to make sure they were big enough to see. Some of my codes were a little tough to see,
Brian
Dammit, we need that Wood Dale!
This might help................ ;)

I love that pink Grill....

Come on, no one else had anything to contribute here? AJ, Shaun, Jeff nobody else has pictures to contribute? To much sleeping in hammocks?
Brian
alright alright
here's one that OLDER than the wood dale!!

I'll have to take a look. I know I have one grill with no patent number on it. Other than that, the older ones all have patent numbers.

if the patent number is 3538906, then the grill is from the 70s
if the patent number is something different, share it here and i'll figure it out :)
while the ranger came out in 65, it doesn't really mean all the rangers in existence were made in 65.
We need to make a list of codes we need pictures of...

Troy I see what your saying, and I just didn't think the Yellow Ranger was made into the 70's. I know the Red Ranger came out in 1973. But going by the patent numbers you are correct. The patent number 3538906 was filed Nov 22 of 1968 and issued Nov 10 of 1970. So by those dates any grills manufactured between Nov 22 of 1968 and Nov 10 of 1970 should have patent pending on the vent and all grills with patent number 3538906 should of been made after 1970.
I believe patent number 3538906 was for the switch to screwless leg sockets, I know my Ranger definitely had screws holding the legs on (which would be 1960's) but I am sure that was just the design of the grill.
Hey I think the smokey vents need to be shown as well. I want a picture of them all!
Brian
Anyone can look up a patent #, it's easy. Go here: http://patft.uspto.gov/netahtml/PTO/patimg.htm and plug in the number. You'll get the original patent drawings with the associated dates. etc. I have 30 or so of these patents from a former life at Black & Decker, and learned a lot about the USPTO - not all of it interesting or fun. Here's a pic of one page from the one mentioned below, and Smokin Hutch is right, it's related to the leg attachment.

i can, and will.
i also have a spreadsheet with all the weber patents (numbers, dates applied for, dates granted, descriptions, etc)
I'll publish both and link to them from the what year was my weber grill made (http://weberkettleclub.com/determine-age-of-old-grill/) page.

sigh.
if you only knew...
I have discovered another pre 1979 vent. It's exactly like the 1979 vent with the raised WEBER logo but no "A"! I stared and squinted, but there is no letter there. I wonder if it is a '78? I'll post a pic of the latest score as soon as I can get her re-assembled. ;D
Craig
What are we still looking for? Are we missing any?
Here it is from a new (to me) Copper Mist/Chocolate 22.5. Until today, I had never seen a pre date code lid vent with the raised logo. Has anyone seen this version or does anyone have this on one of their kettles? I'm going with 1978 since we have an example of a 1977 Black kettle here on WKC in another post that has the earlier engraved logo and smaller turn-tab.
Craig
I would agree it's got to be right around there. If you look at my earlier post with all the pictures, there is my 1979 with the "A" code and raised letters, and there is the patent # with the word Weber but it is engraved not raised. So yours must be somewhere in between,
Brian
Hey Smoothsmoke I love the smokey with the wood handle!
Brian
Here's an interesting tidbit.... If you look at the double date codes, year 1 (2001, 2011) end with an "A" then through the years spell (preceeded by either a "E" "D" and now an "A") look to build the word A-U-T-H-O-R-I-Z-E-D (2001-2010) each year ending in a 0 have the "D". The 2010's decade so far seems to be repeating this pattern. Or you could argue that it spells D-A-U-T-H-O-R-I-Z-E, if you want to go with year '0 to year '9 decade.
Craig
So last week I pick up the Old Redhead, tonight I pick up the "Duke" Frathouse Redhead. Look at the Pic's of the Daisy wheel I took. Is this mid production year?

Very cool pictures everyone. How difficult would it be to put them in order? Any computer guru's out there, oldest to most recent.
Not too hard to do....maybe semi-standardize the pic size & see if we can gather them all up....
Get jackasses like ME to clean their damn vents before they take a picture........... :-[
the pre-date code ones may become a small bit issue-bound, as there's some with no EXACT date.
I could do this & see if I can tag with each person's name w/ pic.........
Anybody notices something that's missing, load it up or figure out how to get the pic to someone who can, or even post that you NOTICE it's missing~~ prime opportunity to work together !!!!!
What's the vote, go A thru the letters & then the juicy stuff at the end, OR in oldest to newest, as best we're able?
Thanks Buckie, that's what's so cool about this place. Nobody can do everything, but everybody can do something.

There's some scratching around it, so the picture doesn't quite convey what I'm pretty sure I'm seeing in person.....a sideways "C"
from a double rivet OTS Redhead I got with the skewers & tater racks......
I'm sure these have already been posted but I can't help but post anyway!

That's Ok, just stick 'em up & we can pick the clearest photo, or maybe show several different colors from the same year..... ;D
Reilly...the paint job on the 56 is awesome. Id like to see more of that one.

This version should be pre date code. About 1976-1977, I thought for sure my '78 Warrior (pictured earlier in the thread) had an A in it from the pics until I actually took delivery of it. Though, a pre '79 yellow 22.5 recently scored on here has a sideways "D" right before "WEBER STEPHEN PRODUCTS" on that vent. So, anything's possible.. :-\
Thought about that, wasn't sure.....I just like seein' the Virgin Mary on my grubby kettles...... ;D
when did one touch start ?

Between 1982 and 1983, Still havn't seen a "D" example of one yet, only "E" so far......
The Virgin Mary has me thinking of R. Lee Ermey somwhere saying in character as Sgt. Hartman " I WANT THAT KETTLE SO CLEANED AND SQUARED AWAY THAT THE VIRGIN MARY HERSELF WOULD BE PROUD TO COOK A BURGER ON IT!"
We are the WKC! Rescue. Restore. Respect. No Excuses. And use the macro setting on those photos. And give me some room to crop around the full diameter of the vent dammit!
So Marty, are we puttin' up here or sending to you?
WTF is a macro setting ?
.....not trying to be difficult, just that I always use 640x480, per demands of Smoke Ring.....
Is that the extra BIG size?
& also, just to be clear, you're taking on this paticular cat herding?

This thing's a One Touch, does that change things....?
Yeah Buckie, to do a good printable poster-sized version, I'll need a larger format file, about 1200 x 1200 square. (4" x 4") Macro allows better focus at close distances, so you get all the details. Most cameras today have that function built in, and sometimes the AUTO setting takes care of it. Not sure if cell-phone cameras are there yet. You can send photos to me here at home: mgierke at mac dot com (or a PM through the site) and I'll make the best of whatever you have. If I grab 'em from the web, they come in at 75dpi, and are pretty fuzzy when I try to use 'em for a project like this.
Happy to do this - I love the history, the stories, and having a hand in the preservation of this iconic brand. If that means herding cats, then so be it. I know when to say when.

Well here is the"D" that makes no sense. Arlington Heights...
Makes me wonder if the "D" was for Demo?

WTC rocks! We are up to so much here it's amazing. There are T-shirts, patches, now posters. A WTC man (and woman) can know and show what they got.
Once the graphics are set I can see coffee mugs and key chains next.
Thanks MartyG for taking this project on, I will reshoot some of the vent codes I have in macro setting and send them to your email.

That could very well have been a demo kettle. Maybe used at a home and garden show in the 70s then sold off? It's always fun to speculate a single kettle's true lineage.

Many of these vents would make great visuals for my writing project.
OK, I have to ask...what writing project? Does it have to do with Weber or the WTC?

Macro is a setting that lets the camera focus extra close. The icon for it looks like a tulip.
It doesn't matter whether the picture is larger or smaller (higher or lower resolution.) It allows the picture to be in focus when you get close enough to fill the frame with the vent cover. But it is best to leave some space around the cover to allow for cropping.

if it has a patent number, it's from the 70s
Some from the mid 60's (like the Ranger) also had patent numbers.
