So I saw several write-ups concerning the coshell charcoal but I was wondering if anyone has tried to smoke with this stuff? I picked up a bag at OSH (Lowes) because 1. It was on sale and 2. Stubbs is 11.99 for a 15lbs bag there and this seemed like a better deal. From what I gather this is a hotter, cleaner, longer cooking charcoal. Thanks and happy cooking.
I love the stuff and smoke with it all the time, in the kettle and the wsm.
Burns really clean, in fact I just noticed the other day during the start up stage, no smoke just heat coming from the kettle.
I picked some up the other day too because it was on sale BOGO at my local grocery store, and because Stubbs is getting so expensive.
It used to be available locally and I really liked it.
Burned clean, but I found that cooking direct with it on my Big Green Eggs or Drum Smokers the fats dripping on the coals produced a lot of ash on the meats.
But smoking with it indirect wasn't a problem.
I'm pretty meh on it. I really don't like the thick heavy ash it leaves behind. It does burn hot and clean but I personally wouldn't go out of my way for it. I like my Stubbs and RO lump.
So I tried it today and grilled some pork chops on the red. Fired up a 3/4 full chimney of it and it cooked 3 packages of chops without any issues. While nothing will replace Stubbs, this is one of the better charcoals I have used. Ill be buying some more here shortly. I cant wait to smoke with it, but it will be a little while since my schedule is screwy.
