Buy one. Buy one now. Using it for the first time today. Instructions say it should hold +/-15°. Smoker has been holding 237-240°, rock solid.
Is anyone concerned about creosote from too low of a draft when that shuts down? How open is it when running and does it ever shut closed? Maybe I am old school thinking of regulation the amount of incoming air to control the burn and the vent to control draft.
It's open 99% of the time. Think I've seen it close to colsed, 2 or 3 times today. When it does close, it's not for long.
I was also standoffish about using the top vent for control, as well. My WSM likes to run hot though. This is the first time I've really been able to hold a decent temp. I'm ready for brisket now.
Interesting. I've seen a slew of this things in use all of the sudden on the facebook groups and have been wondering if it is worth it or not. I don't really have problems controlling my temps, but it would be nice to be able to walk away for a few hours and know that things will remain in check.
Soon as I see how long it will go, I'd have no problem with an overnight cook. No alarms needed.
Can't wait to hear your results.

Didn't really take any pics. Wish I would have. Hour rest and dinner is over. Temp is still holding strong. Pig hit the grill at 9:45am. It's now 8pm.
This is how the bone came out.

Here is a link of a PDF manual for the Maverick Tip Top
http://www.tbsgrillshop.dk/UserFiles/file/TTT%20manual.pdf
How does it stick to the top of your WSM? Those instructions just say, "pressing down slightly to seat the gasket to the lid's arc" That keeps it on?
As for setting temperature, say you want 250º, and it's 90º ambient - start at setting 3 and adjust from there?
How do you have your lower vents positioned?
Thanks in advance.
Yep. Press slightly and it stayed all day. Bottom vents were open till I hit temp, then closed down. Stayed rock solid for almost 11hrs.
@G19
Super glad to hear, I will be ordering one soon with some left over Father's Day money. I have a WSM and Performer so sounds like one will work for both. To be honest my Performer with the Smoke N Sear holds temperature very good with only what I would call some drifts so this should catch that early.
Thanks TD
Where's the best place to orderone of these? Link would be great thanks!
@DonoBBQ http://www.yardandpool.com/maverick-tip-top-temp-grill-temperature-regulator
That's the best price around too.
Just ordered one, if it works as described it is a heck of a lot less than a DigiQ and doesn't require modifying the kettle.
Ordered mine yesterday, already received shipping notification, should receive by Friday. Just in time for July 4th cooks.
Cheers, TheBigDawg
Got it today! Raring to give it a whirl.
Think I'm smoking a fatty tomorrow. Gonna break it in.

If you haven't already, BUY ONE NOW!
The TTT had keep my temps solidly in a 5-7 degree range for 7 hours.
The trick on my 22 inch kettle is to have the bottom vent very slightly open. The TTT has taken care of the rest.

gotta have some air coming in the bottom!! 8)

Agree.
How could you get airflow with the bottom vents shut down, as per the instructions ?
I have one inbound.
Still can't wrap my head around on how these things automagically stay on the kettle.

I did have to keep my bottom vent just cracked open, but far less than you would imagine.
With an ambient temperature of 80-90 degrees, I used a setting of 2.5-3, with slight adjustment as the day began to heat up.
I was able to get solid, consistent smoke for 10 hours with only minor adjustments. It held my temperatures between 230-245 with little worry. Absolutely rock solid. Produced a dream on my very first brisket attempt.
Get the marketing images out of your head, the TTT stays nearly full closed unless temps drop, then opens enough to regulate.
The fit requires removal of the black plastic handle on your outlet vent (if so equipped). The red silicone band around the base of the unit is lowered to where two thirds remain on the TTT and one third below. Fit completely over the vent and press on the side nearest the handle. This will cause the silicone band to form to the shape of the lid.
Without finding some elaborate way to solid mount, you will have to remove the TTT anytime you need to open your grill. The silicone band will keep it from sliding around. Don't forget to used a glove or towel when removing, it will be hot!
Without a doubt a much better use of your hard earned money than the electric, fan driven, ATCs that cost a lot more. JMHO. And only 20 bucks to boot.
I know now that I can put my brisket on and go back to sleep now and not worry bout what is going on in my grill. That alone is worth the money.
Cheers, TheBigDawgFL
Thanks
@TheDude ordered and tried it out today. Held pretty good temps all day long. Nice new toy to play wwith.
Maiden voyage with the TTT.
Memphis ribs.
Rock friggin solid at 250°....unbelievable so far.
Bottom vent is closed 100 % !!!!!
So far this thing is some Big Medicine.....vision quest stuff goin' on here !
Glad you guys are all getting the same results! $20 very well sent!
I wonder if this can be used on the WSM? I don't see why not? I think I'll pick one up anyway.
@shock_me I use mine on a WSM.
Just curious what position you guys have your lower vent set at? In the manual in red it says, "CLOSE ALL THE VENTS AND OPEN THE TOP VENT FULLY" How does the grill get to temp with the lower vent closed? What am I missing here?
Yeah, I don't get that part in the instructions either.
My lower vent ends up somewhere around 1/8 open.
Probably varies as to how well your kettle or WSM seals.
I get to temp with the bottom vents open, then shut down and let
It do its thing.
The last part of the instruction sheet says that you may need to adjust vents.
I keep mine just slightly cracked open, works a charm.
Cheers, TheBigDawg
Still have to order one.

I have one I have used once. Tip top and snake combo on my OTG. Bottom vent open about 3/16" 2x2 snake with an occasional block of oak on top. Held between 240 and 259 for over twelve hours. Opened the kettle once about 6 hrs in. Checked temp every half hour with my probe hanging through the top of it. I think it kept it from working it's best. Could not close all the way down if it needed. Stayed about 1/4"open. I drilled my lid and installed a thermometer to fix that issue. Im going to let it run overnight Friday or Saturday with another shoulder. Had it set at about 4 if you look at it from the side in relation to the top edge. I will let you know how it goes.
addicted to charcoal......
Mine just came yesterday. I have hesitated on getting one since I can usually get my vents dialed in to where I don't need to touch them, but am never comfortable enough to leave for a few hours and assume the temp will stay where I want it to. I figure this will be a good babysitting option when I am going to be away from the grill for a while. I'm doing a test run now and will let everyone know how it goes.

I got one about a month and half ago and it has been siiting in my cabinet since. I forgot all about it. I bought it out of sheer curiosity. Not much of a gadget guy but it looked interesting. I too will do some test runs and will report my findings. I don't get the bottom vent closed thing. You need air flow.
Can't wait to try this thing out. For the good reviews and the price it seemed like I didn't have a choice. Plus all I have is weber kettles and smoker. Seemed like I didn't have an option :-)
You guys have me sold. I will be purchasing one soon. Thank you.

Quick question: Do you guys use the same charcoal set-up per the provided instructions?

I use the snake method. Gives great control.

I use the same minion in the WSM as I would with any other cook. I don't think the setup in the instructions would last very long.
Anyone know the size or where to get the silicone attaching band?
TIA
I can check mine but if memory serves me it is 5"

I'm sorry, I never realized that you were sending this to me. I would have jumped on that offer in a heartbeat. Thank you anyway.
