Title: Shish Kabob skewers
Post by: Hogsy on March 08, 2013, 02:45:40 AM
My latest project has been making skewers for an old shish kabob ring
With the help of Duke, I managed to get my hands on a 70's shish kabob ring
The rings in mint condition but its missing the skewers so I've been working out how to replicate the original skewers
Thanks to Buckie, who provided me with plenty of photos of his skewers and ring and gave me measurements of the handles and each skewer , he even converted to metric for me
I took the photos and measurements down to the local men's shed, don't know if y'all have them in the US, but its a place where retirees get together and use there craftsman's skills with timber and steel
I met a gentleman in his 80's who was more than willing to make the handles for me. I gave him a piece of spotted gum decking and said I'll see you in a week
Upon for return he pulled out the handles with a smile on his face and then my face lit up when I saw what a great job he'd done

He only wanted a $1 handle for them which I said wasn't enough, so he said 'make it $10' . To which I replied 'what do you drink?'
Johnnie Walker he replied , and so I returned 20 mins later with a bottle to a large smile . I just need to stain them now
Next is the metal skewer, the only SS flat rod I could get was to large to fit in the slots so I decided to use square bar, not original but a lot stronger and cheaper, the same as a roti bar
Bought the rod . Cut it to size but only 4 of the skewers fit due to the angle they slide in on the ring
So back to the metal shop on Monday to see if I can get something to fit

Is there an echo in here? ::)
Thanks for the support guys
What do ya think?
Is it going to make any difference whether I use flat bar or square rod to make the skewers?

"Cut it to size but only 4 of the skewers fit due to the angle they slide in on the ring"

Did I goof up on some measurements ^^^^^^^^ ?

The metal on the originals slides into the wood only an inch max.......

Those handles are fuckin' perfect !!!
Buy that guy another drink from me !!!!

Nice work Hogsy! Nice work Hogsy! Nice work Hogsy!

Buckie your measurements were spot on
There must be a bit of give in your skewers, the square rod I'm using is pretty stiff and because the two smallest skewers of the six slide into the slot and hole on an angle the 6mm bar is too large for the hole and slot
Hope that makes sense

Ahhh...Gotcha....

I thought it was an issue of not long enough to include the inset of the metal into wood,  in that case the handle would block you from setting it down into the slot....hope that makes sense.. ;D

I'm supposing you see what I meant by the things being a bit hard to turn over in the slot, or maybe not, 'cause you're using the square stock & it will probably be no problem !!!

The square rod turns fairly easily. You still need to lift it out of the slot , turn and place it back down

Ok, good.... the flat original ones are a bit hard to turn, not terribly goofy, but a minor nusiance...... :D

OUTSTANDING WORK!  8)  Those handles, wow! Perfect! I need to divert my searches over to a roti ring. Awesome pair of Copper Mist's btw. A Warrior and his Brave. It makes me think, father and son.
