Busted tie-rod. Easy fix. Maybe some new ball joints. You gotta have another redhead lid in the Copa-Cabana you can use for photos. We won't tell.

Oh boy Golly.  You have your work cut out for you.   It looks like it MIGHT have sustained some additional damage on the lid during shipment.  That big ding looks like there is some fresh steel showing that hasn't rusted over yet.  Also where your one wheel is bent, cracked out, it looks like the frame is slightly bent on the crossbar bar in front of the axle.  Might your 165.00 shipping cost cover and damage?

Taking apart these frames can be a challenge when they are in this condition.  Those connectors inside the frame rails that the bolts secure into usually are deteriorated beyond any sort of repair. I've seen someone, somewhere get suitable replacements from a bike shop.  I don't recall the name of the part.

Even your light fittings in GG are in better condition than that lid

Ok resto up begin
1st question
Is the frame black gloss , Matt or satin?

Heaps of lids to choose from

Looks like its not the orig lid
Bowl is lite red like two tone
Lid is solid red darker than bowl

This ones gonna be a challenge, but if anyone can can knock it up it you Golly! Gloss black is original and looks best. Just keep a watch for a better lid. In the meantime I would touch it up with high heat red. I will be doing mine on my sequoia soon.

Golly...all the SS Performers I've seen are more of a satin finish...BUT, you can do whatever you like to yours.  Sounds like you're gonna take it all down anyways.  Make it how YOU want it!
To add to this...if you choose a satin color like they came with, it might be a little more forgiving cosmetically than a gloss black would be.   When I did my yellow Ranger legs, I used a satin bbq black paint that is also rated to 1000 degrees.   It might hold up better than a gloss black that probably won't be heat rated at all.

Here is something "similar" to what I used.

I thought weber used gloss for some reason. When I matched my green performer gloss seemed to math the closest. I really liked the way it looked when it was finished. What did you use on your gas kettle Golly?

satin black sounds good re hiding imperfections
heat rated paint is also a very good idea almost certainly hold up better than the std stuff
do i paint it red??
gas kettles were painted matt black i think  def wasnt gloss      either satin or matt
i think a trial painting might be in order
would prefer gloss but condish might not allow this

I was referring to the frame of your Performer.   Of course the kettle itself is a whole nother project.  I don't think there is a GREAT way to handle the red paint other than touching it up best you can with as close a match as you can find...

High heat wrinkle black would be awesome on the frame. I think the oem frame was semi glossy but it fades with time.

You could polish the steel to look like stainless, then clear it. Would look sweet. Its gonna be a lot of work.

Thanks fellas

Next question is
To fire up
You need to press the red button to allow gas flow
Then push the ignigtor
When releasing red button flame goes out gas is cut
Should this red button/ valve staying open
How?
It's faulty?
Please point me in the direction of the schematic and part numbers please

Isn't there a sense wire that sits in the flame to tell the valve that the flame is lit?

I just got my ss performer so I am definitely not an expert but, I don't have the red button. I turn on the gas and press the igniter. This is the first I have seen any other button. Could that be unique to Australia?

do the white walls just pop out with a screw driver? i like the idea of the red walls...did you just paint and pop back into place? forgive me i am new to the restoring/customization portion

i used the butt of a chisel to "pop"the ring out slightly doing 1 then the next etc...
then turned wheel over and this time with the danger end of the chisel slightly levered it fully out
this job requires a bit of patience as the whitewalls want to crack
remember stay away from the "weber"with your chisel

I am happy to share with everyone I am now the proud owner of this fine grill. I was offered it by Golly as he knows I'm a fan of the readheads so I snapped it up. Seeing how this Performer started out I consider myself very fortunate to have it given the amazing work Golly has put into it. I have already cooked a pork belly on it and it will be getting another workout this weekend.

Will take some photos of it shortly with the rest of the family.

Many thanks again Golly for this score.

So how many kettles are coming back to the Coast? I'll make sure there's plenty of room in the tray.
