Title: New A Code Redhead!
Post by: crowderjd on December 12, 2015, 11:06:50 AM
It's been a busy week!  I picked up a 1994 22.5 black kettle off of craigslist for $20 last weekend.  Really I just wanted the ash pan to put on my 1986 brownie.  Got it, and it also had the new grill grates with the flip up sides, a very good triangle, and one really good wheel.  I swapped out a bunch of parts onto my other kettles, and put on all the older parts back on the black kettle.  I sold it last night for $25!  (Still a good deal, I think, as the wood handles were still in very good condition).  The redhead has been up on CL here in Vegas since Wednesday.  I told myself that if it was still available on Friday after school, I'd inquire about it.  Sure enough, it was still there.   Texted the guy, and he said I could pick it up this morning.

Drove on down, handed the gentleman $10 I got from the sale of my kettle last night, and went about my morning errands.  When I got home looked it over and cleaned it up.  It is a 1979 A code.  It had a bent handle, one paint chip on the top, a bit of rim rash, and someone must have done some spray painting nearby as there was some overspray on the lid.  I took to it with a razor scraper, and after that gave it a good wash as it was super dusty, and I did a little work to bend the handle back into shape, and that was that.  Less than an hour of work, and she's nearly good as new.  I'm going to work on the bottom vents at some point, but it's not a big priority for me.  The leg sockets are nearly perfect, and I think I might even leave the paint chip on the top.  The way I look at it, I got this beauty for $5, which makes the cheapskate in me VERY happy ;)

The ONLY complaint I have is that it is missing the ash catcher...That's my big quest right now.

So here's some pics, and I hope you all have a great weekend!

The black grill I got last week and swapped out for parts, then reassembled with my old parts, cleaned up, then resold.

Once I got her home, here's the pics during and after cleanup:

As my daughter says, "Dad it looks like you're building a Weber fort."

Very nice.  I grabbed a 78 Red this week too.  Almost identical condition to yours.  Fixin' to do a Roti Chicky tonight to welcome her into the fold.  Again, grate pickup!

Killer find! Those 79 reds are a beautiful fire engine red. I have the same year and love it! Congrats on the pickups!

If I'm not mistaken a fort has 4 walls.  You've still got some work to do!

@Russell C. I'm working on it!  Especially if I can find a yellow, red mist performer and a 26er!  @Craig I found it interesting that there was a noticeable color difference between my 1978 red and the 79.  I wonder if they messed with the enamel composition each year?

I would give two fingers and a big toe for one like that, they don't seem to exist over here...lovely find, amazing price.

@pbuk where do you live?  I will say to be patient.  It has been a year since a red showed up in Vegas.  Do you live overseas?

Yes, I live i the UK, bought my first Weber in 2011 and then my dad discovered the WKC and sent me the link, I now have them everywhere and cook all year round, in fact this Christmas will be spent in the Welsh mountains with the collection...
Ref. the real vintage models, they are very rare over here as I'm guessing any of the really old kettles have been imported from the U.S.

@pbuk Christmas sounds nice.  Back in 1997 I visit Snowdonia National Park in Wales.  Really beautiful.  Enjoy, and welcome to the site!

I have noticed a change between years on the Reds as well as the Blues, not only the fade but the color as well.  Nice rescue!
