actually I made that

Actually I made those, bought a pair of the baskets and chopped

punched a few holes where needed and cleaned up all the sharp edges

then drilled a few holes to bolt them back together

and ended up with a basket big enough for the minion method

That's a great idea Jammato!!! Let us know how it goes with the first cook
Have you got any pics of it in the kettle?
Now we're talkin' !!!
That's a basket that could do some damage !!!
Good Show!!!!
Is that 1st one an actual Weber product?
If you want to make a set, look close at the angles of the bends of the donor set. I used a angle duplicator to get them right so they will sit flat. took me all of 30 minutes
tools, 2 vise grips, used to hold and reform metal if it bent
1 phillps head screw driver
1 pump pliers
1 tin snips
1 hammer, to help flatten stuff bent out of wack
a small file to clean up sharp edges
1 punch, 7/8 size to open bottom hole so they align
drill motor and 5/16th bit
I angle duplicator tool
additional supplies where
6 small bolts i got out of my collection on the work bench
6 nuts
6 lock washers
12 flat washers
I disassembled the baskets and fiddled with the things, did a few measurements and set them aside last night
this morning I decided to do it, I first cut one of the baskets, I did not cut the bottoms except to take off the point I created, using the angle finder I cleaned up the cut then put the other basket on it to draw out where to cut it, remember to leave materials to bend so yo have overlap
then I cleaned that one up and put them in position, I needed to trim up some more. then I clamped them together to bolt the bottoms together. then a bolt in the side, next I cut one tab off each side piece, opposite sides guys. I then had to bend the bends a bit more and I set the tabs in the bottom and lined up the pieces and clamped them together and drilled for the first hole. Once I had that bolted I realigned the two outer sides and drilled another hole, then bolted and did the third
Voila, I had a long basket as shown that I could do a minion in

I will be doing some ribs next weekend, will show those pics and report back then
Great idea there! I'm sure you will achieve a very long cook with that set-up.
that is sweet! I saw a bunch of these at my local Walmart on clearance. The boxes are thin and get torn up, so anyone ineterested in doing this, i would check them out. i dont recall the price, but must of been like a $2 off.
Hey Jammato, those look awesome! Nice craftsmanship, I was wondering of you have thought about packing them with unlit up to the center and putting the the lit in the middle to minion out to the edges (if that makes sense). I'm sure you have your own great ideas, but that was the first thing I thought of. Can't wait to see the experiments
I will do a better build thread in a few days
Next week we are doing Kansas City Ribs. So I will report th first experiments
Very cool.
That's a cool mod.
Kickass mod and great tutorial. These would be especially great for doing pizza cooks!
Great idea!!!
Great idea! Thanks for the tutorial
because of all the interest I added a few design notes and pics
when cutting the bottoms, clip the sharp point for safety, also note the top fold is cut back to help in fitting
and see where the bottom hole was enlarged, this is so the vents overlap

notice the cut is not a 90 degree, the bottoms and sides are not 90 degrees, also see where I had to cut a bit more back near the bottom, this was for fitting purposes

on the other bottom the bend is not on a 90 either as shown here, also you need to cut for clearance again once bent

back side shows the angle of the bend better

to make sure alignments were kept right, I clamped, drilled, bolted, then realigned and did the next, and so on
(https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7300/16515352026_05ca9947ba_n.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/rapuLJ) (https://flic.kr/p/rapuLJ) (https://www.flickr.com/people/131043525@N05/)
on the back sides, one tab cut on one side of one piece and the opposite side of the other
(https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7445/16353885960_6a1c386719_n.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/qV8Wx3) (https://flic.kr/p/qV8Wx3) (https://www.flickr.com/people/131043525@N05/)
put the back tabs in place and bend them so that the 3rd sections overlap, drill bolt realign drill bolt and do the third bolt
the thing kind of floats there like it does in the original setup, just a bit floppier.

My Home Depot has them for 7.99 I think Ill pick up a set to try this.
Great great idea!!! I have put two together to make a mock SnS but your way is cool
Nice work. Seems like this would work great for pizza cooks too.
