Title: Moink cheats.....
Post by: Cookingmama on December 29, 2012, 08:24:21 AM
Anyone ever cheated with moinks by using frozen meatballs?   I wanted to make some today but wanted to use frozen meatballs instead.

All the time......

I use buffalo chicken pre-flavored for choinks & beef for moinks
The 1/2 oz. size go a long way & if you smoke AND sauce, turn into a really acceptable product.....
1/3 strip of bacon will keep the interior nice & moist.......

I'll also use 1 oz. & cut them in half, toothpick on the rounded side & they sit flat on the grate....

Reason I'll use pre-made is to get  way more bang for the buck feeding a lot of people, the crew I'm dishing to eats them like M&M's
When I'm just doing a small amount at home, then get all fancy, eggs in the center, cheese in the center, etc.

The left half of this shot are the buffalo style chicken with Stubb's honey pecan sauce, just to the right some w/ Big Ron's sauce & some ABT's.....

Good to hear.... I usually make my own, but my family is like a small army!  There are six of us....two teenaged girls (they eat as if they were boys!). And two little boys that eat just like their older sisters....plus my BIG kid....read the hubs.

So frozen might be easier......plus im betting on tasty bacon and tasty sauce.

Most importantly game time is 4pm.......GO CARDS!!!

When first developed, and the BBQ Brethren were certifying MOINK ball cookers, frozen meatballs were a requirement.

Since then, the MOINK ball Nazi's have loosened their death grip on ingredients, and now "allow" the use of home-made meatballs.

Just though y'all might like to know.

Thanks, didn't know the history, just that folks really like stuff wrapped in bacon !!!

There's always an ongoing arguement about ABT's also....

Some folks say they've been around forever in Mexico, etc. & others' say naw the early 80's in the Southwest ??

Don't realy know ?

They came out ok with frozen......but I will. Admit they tasted better with my homemade meatballs.

As for the ABTs.....I grew up surrounded with my Mexican relatives and never had a turd....  ;-)   but....did have bacon wrawpped hotdogs.

Ah yeah, those are delish! When I was on a fishing trip in Cabo San Lucas I ate "Danger Dogs". It's where they add habanero to mustard and wrap it in a tortilla. I still add habanero to mustard for dogs.

My cheat for moinks is to put 4 - 5 on a skewer. Easier to handle and for sure no toothpicks left behind. I don't do as many as buckie but it works for me. Usually 3 skewers worth for my appetizer.
