Title: Wooden Lid Bale Rollers
Post by: MacEggs on November 23, 2014, 06:21:19 PM
I rescued a beat-up black Master-Touch on Saturday.

Has anybody installed custom made lid bale rollers made from wood?

The ones from the rescue look like this.  Just wondering if anybody has had it done, or given it some thought. Thanks.

I know that I could just buy new ones, but, sometimes I like to think outside the box.  :)

I'd be willing to bet that if you sweet talked zaphod enough, he could whip something up for you.

I'd be keen for a pair of non-plastic.

I've always thought that SS bale rollers would be nice.

I thought I remembered this topic in the past.
Did a quick search, and nothing significant showed up.
Plus, I was a little lazy to search anymore.

@zavod44 - PM sent

i found some nylon sleeves at Ace but i had to run a thin blade through them to fit over the nubs on the bale.  copper tubing is a great idea.

@MacEggs Looks classy, especially if the handles match. Did you make them or is it a miscellaneous piece of something? Reminds me of an old bathroom faucet handle

I do believe the handles match.  I had these lid bale rollers custom made by a gentleman who makes custom spice grinders.
I requested him to make some, and he used sugar maple.  The above pic is from @MrHoss 's M/T.

I currently do not have a M/T, but am looking for a cheap OTS to convert, as I have all the parts for a conversion.  :D

Nice. I took the melted plastic ones off my kettle that is dedicated for the kettlepizza. Would love to see some heat resistant ones made out of wood.

I can't see having any issues with the wood.  These were made from sugar maple - a nice hardwood.

Alright, I have had these wooden lid bale rollers on my new-to-me lime green performer for a few weeks now.  Done maybe 4-5 cooks on it so far.

I decided to do a good test on them.  Some high-heat chicken wings.
Two charcoal baskets located close to each of the wooden lid bale rollers.

I gotta say ... I am very impressed.

Sure, the wood got very hot to the touch, but I was never concerned that they would "burst" into flames.

If anyone is considering this, I recommend it.  Whether it be for a Performer or a MasterTouch.

A good hardwood would be my preference.  Mine don't match the handle, but that is not a deal-breaker for me.
