Later today my wife and I head down to Seattle for a quick overnight trip. Part of the purpose of this trip is to meet up with some friends from Portland who happen to snag the odd kettle goodies for me. ;)
... Now here's my issue... I may or may not have been a little optimistic in terms of what I can fit in our Grand Cherokee! :o
Thankfully our boys are staying at Grandma and Grandpa's so I can at least remove the car seats and fold the rear seats flat. We're only taking a backpack of clothes so I pretty much have the whole cargo area but I still think I might be in trouble...
Here's the packing list:
(2) 22.5" Kettles
(3) 18.5" Kettles
(1) 22.5" Performer - Silver model thankfully! - w/Roti ring
(1) 18.5" WSM
(1) Black Jumbo Joe
Do-able or am I leaving my wife in Seattle? ;)
I'm not going to lie, I'm a bit concerned but figure I can disassemble the performer completely and then using ninja packing skills try to nest everything together. WSM also breaks down into pieces but HrmMmMmmmmm....
What do you think?
Six
That is a lot of kettles. I would love to see a pic after you get done loading them.
As you can fold the rear seats flat, I don't think you'll have much trouble, especially if you can nest the kettles.
Maybe the wife could ride on top with the cart or something? ;D
lol, or how bout just attach the performer cart to the jeep like a sidecar on a motorcycle ;D
I'll get a shot of it all shoehorned in somehow :) Might have the WSM sticking out the sunroof like R2D2...

Better start practicing 'Tetris'....
Be sure to take some pics!
the real problem is how will you fit the other 4 you find on seattle's craigslist in there on the way home?
i once fit 10 in a subaru forester.
It wasn't pretty, but they fit.
3 stacks of bowls
legs were all in a bag
ash pans were in a bag
triangles in a bag
wheels in a bag.
I probably could have fit another kettle if i were to pack the legs, wheels, triangles better. Giant bags killed the space....

that's hilarious.
yesterday at home depot i saw some dude packing six 8' 2x4s into his cars sunroof. i didn't stick around to see if he actually tried to drive home, but when I walked by he already had 4 of them in place.

Oh I've pre-done my home work - 2 kettles and the smoker are all from Seattle CL ;)

Nice! This at least gives me some hope... :) I swear I could sit in a Home Depot parking lot and just watch all the hilarity that ensues ;D
also - when i squeezed 10 into my forester, there was no packing material or anything. bowls were literally stacked directly onto eachother.
they were all junker kettles and I did not care about damage. However, there was absolutely NO porcelain damage from the packing and driving.
It was also the noisiest ride ever.
You're a Grillfella 604
Do
or Do Not
There is no How
(There is just Do)
I'm just interested to see it done. Make sure to take pics.
I think we should have a contest to see how many kettles 604 can get in his Grand Cherokee, winner gets what he has to leave on the curb! Lol

Haha, unless the winner is looking forward to the leftover charcoal ash I dump on the curb they will be thoroughly disappointed ;) There all coming home one way or another!
No super rare items to worry about just some interesting stuff... will get a photo up at some point tomorrow :D
I'm more excited to hear what the guys at the border have to say!

Does that include the wife? Lol.. 8)
Disassemble and stack 'em. You will have room to spare. My personal best is 13 on a jaunt to Chicago. As Troy mentioned, it was a noisy ride.
Booyah! No problem at all boys!! even squeezed in a couple bonus chimney starters and (2)! more sidekick tables!! (tradszies?!?) ;) ... probably coulda' squeezed another 18" in there but my wife wussied out and refused to ride on the roof... and to think of all the shit I do for her ;) ;D ;)

What, no gratuitous pic of the wife smirking? Lol... 8)
there's still room for a couple SJ's in there!
nice pack job six. i suppose you have to have some room for more on the way back!
That's awesome, Matt! I wasn't worried about your situation ... well, except for her ...
And, it seems she's rather cool ... and, a keeper. :D :) :D 8)
So, what all's in there?
Pretty good assortment....well done !!!!
Cheers Buckie,
I brought back a set of blue "DD" OTG's both 18 & 22, a set of older MBH brownies - pat# 22" and an "A" 18", A black wood handle 18", an 18.5" WSM, Black Perf lid and bowl, Black new style JJ, 2 sidekicks tables, a roti ring kit... you know the usual Saturday ;) Hope to get shots up in the next couple days.
Funny enough the border was a snap! Since we stayed down the night we didn't have to pay duty, I did however have to explain the Beverly Hillbilly recreation in the back seat and why a person would ever require so many grills ;)
Save the porcelain! pick up some moving blankets to help with the parts clanging around chipping those babies.
You know what, my friends came up with a pretty darn good way of packing them... pretty much every kettle you see has the lid nested upside down inside and then the rim was taped around the edge so that it couldn't move or clang around at all in transport. I put a 22 on the bottom, then a large piece of foam, then an 18 nested inside that! I brought loads or cardboard and foam as well for the box'o'grates :) this was actually one of the quieter big haul runs in terms of rattle! Even the wifey noticed!
The blue 22 in the very back was nestled in snugly and the hatch kept it from moving.
The border had to be pretty funny.. Officer: "Excuse me sir, any illegal contraband?" "No sir officer, just some old Weber grills" Officer: "Well ain't you just some kind of freak!".. 8)
They always get a puzzled look on their face for a split second as I roll up with the windows down ;) but I have my "collector" explanation story down to about 1 min and it usually doesn't leave them with too many more questions :D
Yeah, its time to worry when the guys says something like this:
"I'm sorry sir, worry going to have to confiscate that lime MBH. There's a ban on them due to the disease that spreads. Just pull over there by that pick up. Yeah, just stick it in the back and I will dispose of it. Have a nice day sir, thank you"
Here's the stash in more recognizable form :) I will post up some more pics and info later today... quite the interesting lot with some surprises.

After I sell the smoker I will be out less than $100 on all the rest 8)
Great weekend for you! 8)

That last part about, "why a person would ever require so many grills", you find an answer that doesn't bring smirks and incredulous looks from just about everyone who hears that bull. Let me know as I need to use it....bigtime. The explanations I have been putting out simply are not cutting it.
As to the packing job on the haul - I never had any doubt you could get it done 604. In fact I think you could have gotten three more kettles in easy. When you have the disease we have the improbable finds a way of happening.
