I picked this up in my neighborhood about six months ago. It has been sitting in my garage ever since. Time to get busy! :-[

The good news is that it is all there. ;)
DT gas assist Performer. Wobbly frame, rusty star nuts, roached grates and a hole eaten through the ash bucket.
Other than that, she's beautiful! ;D
It'll take a little work, but you'll be able to rebuild that.
I did one. Had to buy new steel tubes for the cart bottom, get a donor cross member from Gummi and have it welded in, and a bunch of other new parts. But the guy I did it for says it was absolutely worth it (of course, I only charged him for parts, so he got a GREAT deal).
Good luck!
Save the SS performers! Please document it as you go along and keep us posted.
That'll buff right out lol.
Cool finally gonna get it back in action! If any help is needed let me know.
Well, I always forget to take the before pics.:(
I believe that this poor grill sat out where the sprinklers hit it every night. Hard calcium build up all over the frame and a few good pockets of rust at the joints.
The ash pan and ring were very rough, stained with calcium and rust. There was a nickel-sized hole in the bottom of the pan.
The lid has a zillion of these marks all the way around it. (http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/09/11/551bb13cf50ce423a3338174ca4422b7.jpg)
I could not get these to rub out with my 0000 steel wool.
A full on restoration of this grill was starting to look expensive and time consuming. I was not about to give up on it though, just tweak the plans a bit and BOOM! A rat-rod resto!! 8)
A good rat-rod needs a flat black frame. So I painted it.

With this:

3/8" all-thread through the cross tubes. No more rusty star nuts!

Ace Hardware had the new SS bolts.

And the little bushings for the table lid.

I painted the pan flat black and the ring gloss black. I put it all back together and fired it up!

As I think the hip hop crowd says or rap crowd(I really don't know which one) that thing is murdered out (<------ which I understand means it is all blacked out). Nice job JC. I like the all thread idea very creative!

I had read somewhere about running allthread in place of the star nuts so I gave it a try. In keeping with the rat-rod concept I used stuff that I had lying around, in this case that was 3/8". 1/4" would have been sufficient.
This frame is rock steady and will stay that way!;)
I am digging the monochromatic look.
A black tank would totally kick ass!
If you had the aluminum top anodized black. That would be sharp!
I Like That! Nice Job!!
Its cool man... cool.. 8)

Thanks Gummi!
Yes I will keep it. I have plenty of room for kettles! This one will see many years of service as a daily cooker. :)

Wow JC, that is not what I would have done with it.
IT IS WAY BETTER!
How did the paint on the ring and ash bucket hold up? I've got a Gen 2 I'm working on.
Nice! Turned out awesome!

The paint has held up well. I rub the aluminum parts with vinegar before I paint and I get good adhesion.
I have used the Rustoleum Hammered finish on a couple of other projects and it shows less wear on the friction points.
