Awesome mod.
Love it!
What a great idea, it's like a weber picnic basket - comes w/everything you need and still portable. Love it!
That is awesome. I have the parts in the basement to make a red one. Seeing yours has lit a fire under me.
That is basically the idea for the current Jumbo Joe line that Weber has. Unfortunately, I feel that I could never get adequate airflow through it. Twice, I have loaded it up with a full chimney, tossed food on the grate, and then watched the temps plummet. Even though the top and bottom vent were 100% open. I think your grill should fix that issue due to using a standard 18.5" bowl. I like it, and will probably go the same route if I can manage to come across a 18.5" grill that I don't mind drilling some holes in. Nice work
Very, very creative! I current haul around a jumbo joe in the RV, but I like your idea so much more. Awesome mod - please make sure it gets posted in the "mods" forum section of the home page.
Thanks for sharing,

Nicely done sir, nicely done!
grate work, jc! I'm sure that required a lot of careful measurements and even more careful drilling!

No lid support. With my stubby legs I can still use my lid hook.

@jcnaz I am inspired by your build and want to do the same with a twist. I have taken an 18.5 OTS and coverted it to an OTG. I want to add the lid bail just as you did. Would really appreciate the dimensions for the holes as well. Thank you!

@cwmfour, I'm in the same boat as you; converting an OTS to an OTG and wanted to add the lid bail and tuck and carry handle from my JJ, only to discover the handle shape is different. I think I'll have to first order a tuck and carry handle from Brian and then proceed with adding the lid bale mod.
Sent from my iPhone using Weber Kettle Club mobile app (https://siteowners.tapatalk.com/byo/displayAndDownloadByoApp?rid=91018)
@Mr.CPHo I have a JJ as well and lid bales are a different shape because the bowl is a different shape. The JJ has a sharper "angle" than a normal 18.5 kettle. I am waiting on a tuck and carry wood handle from Brian too.
I think you can bend the JJ lid bale to work. The major difference is the angle on the short pieces that go into the holes. On the JJ they are angles up and the on the original Smokey Joe Premium bale they are almost at a 90 degree angle. The rest of the bale is pretty close.
I will take a picture tonight of the two bales overlaid so you can see how much it needs to be bent to work.
Whit
@Mr.CPHo you could also just order the correct profile bale from ereplacements.
http://www.ereplacementparts.com/lid-lock-wire-p-1475802.html
That's what I did. I will still post pics in case you want to bend the JJ bale.

@Mr.CPHo ,
@cwmfour Okay, guys, here is a picture of the lid lock hole that I drilled in my 18.5" kettle, with a tape measure. I also took a picture of the lid lock on the 18.5" Outrider that I used to have. I did not have the,Outrider yet when I built this kettle, so I had to use my best guess as to where to drill. The Outrider's hole placement would have worked better.

@jcnaz with the current setup on the 18.5 lid bale is it pretty tight? On my JJ and my SJG I have to pull up slightly to clip the bale onto the handle.
Should I set the hole lower than what you are showing? Thanks so much for the info!
Whit
@Mr.CPHo here are the comparisons of the lid bales. JJ bale has the more acute angle. SJP is almost a 90 degree.

When I was done drilling on my modded 18.5, my lid lock was about 1/3 of an inch too loose. I was able to reshape the steel enough to get a nice, tight fit. Now that I have measured an actual Outrider (Smokey Joe Platinum) I would drill the holes a bit lower on the bowl.
Thanks
@jcnaz that's exactly what I wanted to know. I'm waiting for the wooden locking handle from Brian to finalize the fit. It's difficult to test fit just the bale at all, but especially without the handle.
FWIW, I ordered the lid bale wire (#86824) last Friday, but just got an email from ereplacements that they're on back order and won't ship for 12-18 business days. Unfortunately it's holding up the rest of my order too, other fun things like a thermo bezel, lid lock support, etc.
Now I need another project while I wait...
