Title: Brought home a Red Master-Touch tonight
Post by: toddmog on April 28, 2014, 07:12:50 PM
I broke the 30 mile rule and went 44 (each way).  :(  It's in pretty good shape...couple of chips here and there, but nice enough over all.  I didn't notice from the picture that it's missing the cleaning kit...the handle and blades are gone.  The thumb screw is soaking in liquid wrench.  The handles are in decent shape, just dirty and faded.  What's the best way to bring them back to life?

What all parts do I need to get this going again?  I've gathered from ereplacements that I need part #90993.  Can I pick up a 1/4-20 thumb screw at the hardware store?

Anyways, here is the pic from the listing.  Will have better pics later.  It's an EZ vent code.

Good news and bad news. You can buy a 1/4 x 20 thumb screw at the hardware store.
Bad news, you can;t sue the 90993 ash sweeper with that. You need to find a 7409.
They are still out there, just hit some Ace hardware stores.
The handles will clean up with some light sanding and then your favorite stain\sealer.
Not sure whats holding it together, my guess is that the blades broke off and the large bolt that hods them to the bow land the cross bar is all that remains. That's part of the 7409 kit.
Enjoy the project!

Despite my gentle persuasion, the thumbscrew snapped off.  How do I get it off now?  Here's what I'm dealing with:

Just cut that small piece off. Do you have access to a grinder?  8)

Or a dremel?  8)

I have a dremel.  So I just cut off that small piece and tap the rest out of the nut?

Don't think that you are the firs to break one, two or more.. Ahem..
I've decided that unless the blades are good, its not worth trying. Recently I learned to use a propane torch to heat up the bolt and thumb screw, let it cool, do it again. Each time spraying some lube after it cools and let it penetrate.  Even then, I suspect that sometimes it isn't coming out.
That's probably why Weber changed the design..  8)

Even better!  Where's the best place to get the 7409?  I found it on amazon for $27.58 plus shipping.  I also found it on grillstuff.com for $16.99, but the pic in the description is different even though it says 7409.  Thoughts???

The blades and handle were completely gone...as in non-existent!

People have reported the Amazon seller is actually not selling the 7408 despite what it says on the listing.

I hit one Ace on the way home with the grill.  They had a tiny selection of anything Weber.  There are two more near(ish) to me that I can check.  One where I got my performer, the other is where I got my grill grate set.  I love living in a smaller town, but hate having to drive 25 miles to get to an Ace!!

I guess the other option is to scavenge parts off my black OTG.  I was going to use the lid from that for a UDS build anyways.  It looks easy enough to mod the ash catcher ring.  I was really hoping to cook on the MT Saturday...that was before I realized it was missing the cleaning kit.   :'(

The MT is cleaning up nicely.  After 1.5 cans of oven cleaner, the bowl and lid are clean.  I also got the triangle and legs cleaned up.  Also sanded the handles and stained them a dark mahogany...mainly because I had it on hand but also because it seems everyone usually goes with lighter handles and I wanted something different.  I still need to do some work on the ash catcher assembly.  My 7409 cleaning kit is on the way so I'll be cooking soon!

Is there a source for the cross bar that supports the ash catcher ring?  Mine is pretty rough and I think I'd like to replace it.  More pics to come...

Dang 1.5 cans of oven cleaner? I can usually get 5 kettles or so from one can. I let my scraper do more of the work to displace the stuck gunk.

The ashbars are available here: http://weberkettleclub.com/forums/weber-kettles-accessories/okay-who-is-really-interested-one-one-of-these/

I sent him a PM yesterday. Maybe I'll hear something in the near future.

My 7409 ash sweeps arrived today thanks to dwnthehatch sending them all the way from MD.  Unfortunately my ash support bar was too rusty and not up to the task of supporting the ring and bucket.  Not to fear, I scavenged parts from my black OTG! I swapped the H style ash sweeps from it and used hose clamps to attach the MT ash ring.  This will be a temporary solution until Brian puts out another batch of the support bars.  I'll put it back to original configuration when I'm able to get the new bar.

Here's how it looks now...

Looks fantastic Toddmog!  I love the dark stained handles on the red MT. My MT has Brian's white oak handles with a light stain.
