Title: Do any of you have a smokey joe, an 18" and a 22" one touch grill?
Post by: tb80 on April 20, 2014, 07:15:46 PM
If so, how often do you use the 18"? I have a smokey joe silver and a 22" but was thinking about getting an 18". Is it worth it?  Most the time I am just grilling for me and the wife but I have two young kids I will be grilling for too before long.

I think the 22 is perfect for most occasions..
The charcoal consumption is based on the length of the cook.

For grilling you're covered, IMO.
You can also do some indirect on the 22.
If I was going to add to your tribe, I would get an 18.5" WSM.

I have several & actually use them quite often, with or without a 22-1/2" lit up also.....

You have to be a little more careful, but a shoulder can be done on one......

I sold an 18" OTS to a friend at work. He finds it perfect for most grilling chores with his family of four (young kids).
My kids are both teenagers so our family cookouts are usually on the 22" model.

Get an 18.  If you're on this site, it's inevitable anyway so might as well just get it over with, lol.

Yeah the 22 is more useful for a small family. You can cook your meat and a side or two on it comfortably. But I've used a 18" a few times and I think it's fun in its own way. There's something charming about filling up a kettle, no matter the size.

If I'm only firing up one kettle, it'll be a 22 most of the time.

I'm surprised no one has said just buy another 22. Cooking on multiple kettles is fun too. :)

The smokey joe is good on small cooks for 1 or 2 people, it is efficient on charcoal and easy to clean.  I can bring the bowl in the house and clean it in the sink.  The cooking grate fits in the dishwasher.  If you get one you will like having it.  The small size does restrict what you can do so you also want a larger 22".   If I could only have one I would get the 22".  If I had a choice between an 18" and 22" I would get the larger 22".

I have the 22" and the Smokey Joe.  Depends on what I cook but for burgers, a quick steak, hot dogs or anything like that I just use the Smokey Joe as it is plenty big enough for me to do those type of cooks.  For longer cooks, bigger pieces of meat or more indirect cooking I use my 22" kettles.

Last week on my Smokey Joe I did 6 cheddar dogs and 2ea 10oz lobster tails.  Turned out great on the Joe.

For overall use if you can only have one then the 22" kettles from Weber would be the most versatile do it all kettle IMO.

All on Smokey Joe

I have 18OTG. Works good for direct heat. They heat up really fast and are pretty efficient with fuel. I'd go with Gummies suggestion and get another 22 for a second kettle.

Yes ...

When I rescued an 18 last September, I never realized how much I would use it. It was my work-horse all winter.
However, it's just my wife and I .. no kids. The 22 gets used for larger cooks, and is amazing for ribs using the snake method.

My SJ has been relegated to holding a chimney heating up ...

Lol. Just Givin a +1 for a good idea. An enabler would a have said "get a 26r and an 18"

Where do you live, TB? If you can, snag one on CL for $20-30 and give one a shot. If it's not for you, you can always resell. Trial and error is one fun part of this hobby.

I'm using an 18 ...

It is just me and the wife and we dont have a very large area, so a small foot print was important ...

So far I have only done the usual stuff on the 18 (Yard Bird, Burgers, Dogs etc.)

But I am thinking I want to try smoking on it ... was considering using a Smokenator with the 18 ...

Any thoughts ??

Thanks for the input guys.  I guess since I have a 22" I don't really need an 18".  Plus, the wife is already annoyed at the number of grills I have.
