Title: Bourbon, Whiskey, and Scotch
Post by: saxart on October 13, 2014, 06:19:20 PM
After seeing Jim's post about his Jack Daniels 18" score....

http://weberkettleclub.com/forums/weber-kettles-accessories/my-first-collectible(for-me-anyway)/

I thought it would be neat to have a place where we could discuss some great beverages.  Yes, I know the difference between Bourbon, Whiskey, and Scotch, but I don't think we're going to have a thread for each, so this will have to suffice.  (Yes, I know some folks feel that any comparisons between these beverages is blasphemy.   Get over it..  LOL)   ;D

I'll start by posting my current favorite.   Bulleit Bourbon.   Nice price, great flavor.  Not "THE BEST", but certainly no slouch.
(Image stolen from the inter-web)   ::)

What's your favorite of these three?   I hope to learn more about these great drinks!

aside from the high dollar johnny walker stuff, my favorite whiskey is Jameson followed by bushmill and cutty sark. for a mixed drink/cocktail, I'm partial to a "perfect rob roy".

edited to add-while not a whiskey drink, my favorite cocktail is a dirty martini

I was a Jack Daniels drinker back when I drank. I would take it any way. Straight up, on rocks, with coke. I haven't had a drink in over 5 years.
I was a rep for Johnny Walker at a point in my life, that is some good stuff, had my fair share of blue label and gold label. As good as that was(and free), I always ended up back on Jack.

Wait Art, your form WI? I thought it was Windsor or Canadian Club on that side of the river...
The only brown liquor I have on the rocks is Crown Royal, not bad.

Me too Mr. Bill, but lightly dirty.

I like whiskey but my wife is a whiskey fiend, lol. She was the the acting "president" of her old company's whiskey club where she was tasked with buying bottles for consumption every week. We have 60-70 bottles at home from around the world but some of my go-to's are Hibiki 12y, Macallan 12y, & Woodford Reserve. They're stored next to a few kettles 8)

Bulliet is quite good- our local Costco has handles of the Bourbon and Rye for $35. Does yours? I read somewhere that SF consumes 30% of Bulleit production or something. It's a bar staple around here.

Gummi-
I'm not sure about our local Costco's prices.  The nearest one is a good drive away, so I don't bother to check.

Interesting about SF's Bulleit consumption.   Ironically, it was a family member who lives in SF that first introduced me to the beverage a few years back.

While I'm not much of a drinker anymore I still enjoy a snort or two of Gentleman Jack on a cold winter night.

For scotch I quite like Macallan 12yr clean. Can't afford to try their 18 ... Most anything else I've tried (which admittedly isn't much) in the lower price ranges isn't as smooth and for me, requires on the rocks or better yet, just punt and drink a good beer. But you have to discover what type you like. That determines "what's good." Lowlands, Highlands, Speyside etc.

I also like some Kentucky bourbon, and in my opinion Redemption is a bargain. Either the straight rye or the high rye although of course they are very different.

I'll have to try some of the others mentioned here.

I go between Crown Royal, Crown Royal Black. When I want a little more kick and I am in a sipping mood I go for Wild Turkey 101, I have bottle of 101, Rare Breed and Russell's reserve 10yr. I know not any high dollar but I like them.

I'll drink near anything although I'm not a big drinker. When I do drink I prefer a scotch to anything else. My last bottle was Chivas and I have just started a bottle of Grants because that's all I had. When I do need to buy a bottle,  it will be a Johnny Double Black. I like that a lot.

I am always trying something a bit better than what I normally drink and was recently gifted a bottle of Johnny 21 year old. That should go down well. ;)

Just picked up a bottle of Buffalo Trace, Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey.

Apparently they only make "one kind" (no trendy flavored stuff, no "ultra special reserved aged-in-100-yr-casks" or whatever). It's reasonably priced and darn tasty if you like KY bourbon.

"Oops"

And I even went to their site and seemingly didn't click around. I guess none of the things up in the nav bar seemed like it? I'm a dork.

It is interesting however, that many of the others are branded differently. Contrast that with say, JD, who makes damn sure to put "Jack Daniels" on everything.

Why wouldn't JD put their same markings on their bottles?...everyone knows who they are. And why mess with a successful venture?

This whisky was just launched here in Canada, so I had to give it a try.

My Dad has been to Scotland many times, and he says that adding just a tiny bit of water, brings out the heart (http://www.whiskyforeveryone.com/whisky_basics/adding_water_or_ice.html) of the whisky. I figure the Scots know best.

When he first told me that, I said it was blasphemy.  Lately, I have been doing just that ... And, I kinda like it.
I find that ice bruises the whisky .... That's right, bruises it. Adding Coke .... Well, you clearly like the taste of Coke over whisky. YMMV

Overall: Not bad. I am not a big fan of any Canadian Club whiskys, but this was tolerable. Maybe a 6.5 out of 10.

Here are a few links discussing this new release:

My Dad has been to Scotland many times, and he says that adding just a tiny bit of water, brings out the heart of the whisky.

Been a Scotch drinker for a good 17 years or so now.  I had never been into drinking the hard stuff till a buddy let me try some of his.  I drank it straight up for years till someone said a drop of water needed to be added.  Literally a drop.  I had my doubts. Did it and had to agree that it changed the taste....opening it up.  I do it all the time now.  If the alcohol content is below 47% or so only a drop is needed.  If above that 47% range it is often labelled "cask strength" and needs more water to bring it into the below 47% range.  Drinking the cask strength Scotch only anesthetizes my taste buds and I taste nothing.  I used to have a collection in the 30 bottle range but for last few years it has been running in the 3-6 bottle range.  What makers are almost always represented?  Bowmore and Highland Park with regular appearances by Talisker, Macallan, Cragganmore and Lagavulin.

Never really got turned on by other kinds of Whiskey be it Canadian or American styles.  The only real exception is Makers Mark Bourbon.....every time I have a little I think, damn that's good.  Sweeter and smoother than any other Bourbon I have tried and tonnes more character.  Is it as good as the best Scotch - no but still very worthy.

My favorite bourbon is Woodford Reserve but it's pretty pricey. My secondaries are Buffalo Trace and Makers Mark which are a bit cheaper. I have had a couple bottles of Makers Mark 46 which is really nice too.

I'm a rum drinker myself but I will sip some good bourbon from time to time. A lot of experts do say adding a little water brings out more flavor. It does make sense that a high alcohol content could numb the taste buds. I'll have to try it but my taste buds may already be too numbed from sipping aged rum neat. The Makers Mark is pretty tasty.

Time to re-visit this topic after …. gasp …. 2 years …..

Here are a couple Canadian whiskys that may not be readily available stateside, but, I must say that they are very nice, indeed.

Their links:

Collingwood (http://www.collingwoodwhisky.com/age-screener/?ReturnURL=/)

Crown Royal Northern Harvest Rye (https://www.crownroyal.com/canadian-whisky/crown-royal-northern-harvest-rye/)

I recently sampled them, and I recommend them to anyone who enjoys a nice rye whisky.

Rum. I'm a rum guy, while Kraken is my go to rum I'd prefer not to have any spiced rums. Give me the island rums, Barbancourt 15 (Haitian), Mount Gay (Barbados), Appleton Estate (Jamaica), etc., I have no idea where these islands are but I'm fairly sure they're south of Indiana. Currently drinking Pilar for medicinal purposes.

Twenty years ago I had about 25 bottles of single malt Scotch at any one time. The Fiddich bottles are gifts...part of their new second cask line...one is called Rich Oak and the other is a marriage of Sherry, Bourbon and First Use Oak...worthy. The Ballantine 15 being another gift is an example of a good Scotch....as the the saying goes...."there is no bad Whisky, only good Whisky and better Whisky". My personal preference are big Scotchs..Lagavulin, Bowmore and Highland Park. The really big Macallans are now out of my price range....and the young stuff is not that tasty to me. The George Dickel 12 is the best Bourbon I have ever tried and at 30 bucks is the best valued Whisky I have ever had.....this stuff is better than some 100 dollar single malt Scotchs I have had.

What I've found over the past 5-6 years is that Canadian Whisky is going the same route that Scotch & Bourbon has done. Different distilling with different agings in different types of barrels. What I like is that the Canadian Whisky hasn't hit the crazy prices that some of the others have. A few years ago I got some 30 yr old Canadian Rye and paid about 50 bucks for a bottle. I would not have a hope in hell of getting a Scotch or Bourbon for that price.

What I find funny, is that in the US, Canadian whisky outsells Scotch, Bourbon, Irish, Gin... combined.

Scotch and Irish whiskey are my favs.

I began drinking it when I wanted to drink less but better.

Spey, high, low or Islay. ALLLL GOOD!  But the ones I prefer are:
-Lagavulin (Islay scotch)
-Glenfiddich 12 (Speyside/highland scotch)

I had a distillers edition of Lagavulin 12 yo and that thing had a bite.  As all Islay scotches, it had a great peat flavor. Smokey almost like smoked meat, sausage, bacon lol

As far as Irish, my fav is Jameson Black barrel.  Sweeter notes, almost banana

I only drink my Whiskeys neat.  Sip and chew sip and chew. Lol

They pair great with my maduro, Cameroon or Sumatra cigars.

Had my first bourbon on a flight to Vegas this past weekend.  It was Buffalo Trace Kentucky Bourbon.  It was surprisingly good.

Correct once these things become "everyday" or "like water" they lose their aura and importance.  When this occurs, it's time to put it down at that point and pick it up down the line and less often.

If anyone wants to continue drinking daily or more...then stick to beer.  But your physique will suffer (belly).

No matter what u drink, IPAs, stouts or porters....scotch beats any beer

My 2 cents

I'm pretty sure that right now, bourbon alone outsells Canadian whisky here in the US, and that wouldn't even count other players in the US whisky market like Jack Daniel's, a Tennessee whisky.

On the lower end, Buffalo Trace, McHenna Bourbon Whisky Sour Mash, Redemption Rye. On towards more expensive, Glenlivet 12 and Macallan's 12.

I wasn't a big fan of the Booker's I tried, and I am most definitely not a Lagavulin 16 guy.

But if you ask me for a "sweet spot" that stays relatively affordable while still being leagues nicer and smoother than anything in the $20-$30 price range, I'd step up to anything by Michter's.

And it none of that is available I won't turn down some Jack.

Nephew just gifted me with a bottle of
Willett's Pot Still Reserve.

Haven't opened it yet but I tried
some at his place and it was pretty good.

He has a whiskey bar set up with almost 125 brands.
(I don' t have that kind of restraint!)

I am a bourbon guy, through and through. I don't partake as often as I did years ago. EC12 was my go-to for a long while (now it's Small Batch...no age statement). Knob Creek Single Barrel is what I have on hand currently and what I prefer these days with a cube or three. Some of the great brands from 4-5 years ago are just too hard to find these days out here in CA.

@MacEggs Kirkland is Costco's house brand...the legend is that Crown Royal produces the Kirkland Signature Canadian Whiskey and the Bourbon is apparently from Buffalo Trace Distillery in Kentucky...Either way, I like both products, especially at their price.  I usually get a nice bottle of whiskey or two for Christmas, but the rest of the year, Kirkland is fine by me.

I haven't tried MWND yet, but I have one waiting for me that a friend picked up. Looking forward to your review of it!

I'm curious to know how you like C921. I've done side by side comparisons with the 3 different batches I have. The differences to me are nuanced, but over all taste very similar. That's just me and my weak palate though. I definitely plan to always have a bottle of it around though. I passed on the batches this year so that I could spend the money on other bottles instead.

It’s definitely a rabbit hole that goes deep. I started collecting probably 5 years ago trying to find some of the rare ones at local shops but now it’s much harder around here with the secondary market prices. The diminishing returns isn’t worth it to me. (Maybe because my pallet isn’t refined enough). I still have quite a few bottles that I’ve been saving for a special occasion or good company so hopefully I can wait out some of these prices. Cheers.

I really enjoy the 1920, how does the 1910 and the statesman compare to the 1920?

1910 and stateman are very smooth. Coming in at 93 and 95 proof respectively...so smooth and easyier drinking v 1920 which is "hotter" or whatever you want to call it due to much higher 115 proof

Any tryA Midwinter Nights Dram from High West before? I did some horse trading and I'm picking up it a a bottle of Elijah Craig barrel proof C921 on Thursday. I can't wait to crack them open. (Pictures for attention)

I cracked open the Midwinter Nights Dram tonight. I've heard that it opens up and becomes more flavorful after the bottles been open awhile and I hope that's the case. Saying I was disappointed with it is an understatement. The nose reminded me exactly of my grandpa's old homemade wine (think strong church wine mixed with kool-aid but in a good way)

Palate: Not a whole lot going on. Similar to a fortified wine, nothing to make you think whisky.

Finish: Grandpa's homemade wine again but with more burn.

I've read alot of reviews about the particular batch I have and was very excited but it was a major let down. Hopefully it opens up more as it oxidizes.

Finally opened this tonight. Elijah Craig Barrel Proof C921. It's my first bottle of their barrel proof line and I must admit it's some of the best juice I've had in awhile.

I've never had the barrel proof but will be on the lookout for it. Elijah is one of my favorites.

Tonight's pour, this year's George Dickel BIB 13 year. I've read great things about this whisky. Honestly I'm not sure how I feel about it. Cherry notes, decent amount of oak, and something else I can't put my finger on, cedar maybe or an old musty cedar trunk? It's definitely different. I will for sure try it a few more times. Anyone else try this yet?

I picked up that bottle the other week. I have similar notes as you, in addition that it was spicier than I expected for a 13yo bourbon. Overall, on paper it is a great value, but in real life it wasn't anything special for me. No regrets buying it (at MSRP) but I will not be restocking this one. I am going to revisit it in a few weeks to see if my feelings have changed.

Exactly, I'm hoping a little more air time after opening it will help it out some

I tried this again last night but I let it get some air time in glass for 20-30 min first. Seemed to help lessen the overly woody funk. I actually enjoyed sipping it this time.

Henry mckenna 10 years old bottled in bond. Smooth and drinkable. Absolutely. Best in the world....per san fran competition....don't think so...but fine. Well above average. Seeing it on the shelves for $59 a lot more lately.

That’s a decent price. I remember when they were 39$ and thought it was one of the better kept secrets, but after it won best bourbon it shot up to 100$. haven’t done much collecting in a while but it’s good to see the price coming down a bit. Every once in a while since it’s a single barrel you’ll get a special one. Cheers [emoji482]

I very seldom drink anything stronger than beer, so mine is very much an uneducated opinion. But I do enjoy bourbon and since there is a Distillery (with roots going back to 1768) about 15 minutes from my home I like to buy locally.

Circus Peanuts....thats the "Something Else" you're trying to figure out [emoji23][emoji23][emoji23]

Seriously,  I'm a fan of Dickel BiB but most of the expressions do habe that very distinct taste that many have described as Circus Peanuts or Flintstone Vitamins.
