So what are my options if I want SS grates? I have 4 22" kettles and only one good hinged grate. The rest are beyond the capabilities of a wire brush!

There are three options that I know of for SS cooking grates.

They all are similar in price but each are different. I have all three and each have individual features that are nice for specific uses. Here are a some write ups and comparisons of them.

You can't go wrong with any of these but I'm partial to the killa grilla. There's also a stainless weber gbs.

They're sold in Europe, Asia etc but not here.

I have the abc one and like it a lot. I use it about 5 times a week. I don't have a slow and sear yet, but I do have Marty's bigger better basket. Both of them rarely leave my Gray performer. Reverse searing bacon wrapped pork chops with them right now. I like that the rods are closer together and the extra rod where the handle is means no more lost wings.

The question is, for what do you need GBS... Honestly and that's very personal opinion, it's one of those "gadgets" for which you pay a lot and actually you don't use it at all...

You can buy the equivalents of all the inserts for less money and put it on the top of a standard SS / chrome plated grate. Same effect / less money spent...

I have about 6 new grates, 3 of the GBS series plated steel versions. When grilling everything from burgers to steaks to fish, how much better will the taste be using all SS grates?
After using the plated steel grates for...30 years or so, I don’t see what all the excitement is about.

Well, standard SS grates are simply more durable. They last at least for few years (even by very frequent cooking). Furthermore, when you keep your cookers outside they are not tending to get rusty as those chrome plated do. That's why I'm never buying something else than SS.

Correct. Rust. That is why I now keep all of my Weber’s in the garage. Even my Happy Hooker Weber Cooker as it is 1979 vintage.

Mine are not "gadgets" as you say. They mate perfectly with a Vortex, of which I have one for all my kettles. 8)

What does a vortex do that a pile of charcoal does not? Why do I want, or need one?

If you don't use vortex every day, it doesn't hurt the standard SS grate that much. I also agree that there is no difference if you use vortex in the middle or i.e. sns on a side for high temp cooks. The grate is getting pretty the same amount of heat in both cases.

In my experience two overflowing baskets with lit charcoal and lid vents open, yield 500-550 in a 22.
600-700 requires a chimney and half and cooking with the lid cracked for increased air flow. That’s my experience anyways.

That is how we do pizza. Lid cracked, one bank of coals with some wood. Temps are 600 plus. Pizza is done in about 6 minutes.
