Title: Wok
Post by: HoosierKettle on September 12, 2017, 06:22:55 PM
Picked up a wok for 9.99. It was on clearance at Kroger. I've never had one. Couldn't pass it up. It's a 14" carbon steel.

A real wok does not have a flat bottom.

I know. For $10 bucks I'll deal with it

Lol, come on man, didn't you know that? [emoji6]
That'll be fun cooking on. Only advise I got for those is make sure you have everything together, ingredients and so on, before you start. It really goes quick and is no fun having to run back in the house for something, including a beer.

You're right about that.  I'd buy it for $10.

Those type of woks usually sell  for  $8-$14  around Seattle.  Not really high carbon steel as claimed.

So I read up on seasoning a wok. Nothing real surprising. Oil and heat. I clean oil and do an initial seasoning. Put it away. Then I read something that says deep frying is a good way to season a wok. It's late, im the only one awake, chicken thighs are in the fridge. Im not hungry but figure what the heck. Poured a couple inches of oil in the wok, season and flour a thigh, and toss it in. I will tell you it's been awhile since I've fried chicken and I last used the cast iron. The wok completely kicks ass on fried chicken. I was blown away by how great it was. I also remember why I haven't deep fried inside for a long time. Huge mess and whole house smells like a deep fryer. Next time will be outside.  Time to clean

Worst part of frying is the smell.

Good. I didn't overpay and it's cheap enough to give it hell for awhile and not worry about it.
