This is shortly after Annie was born.

Annie's first trip to the beach. She worked hard this day. She stayed HOT for 5 or 6 hours, cooked apps, meals, desserts, and followup snacks and more meals for about 20 people - all on a chimney's worth of coshell.

thanks @pbe gummi bear

for this thread, I love my Midget mod, I wanted to do one ever since I saw you first do yours back in the day Lawrence, Troy sparked the idea as I had purchased an 18 OTG since.

What I like about the mod is it doesn't now mess with the lid and bowl at all.  A new set of legs and triangle and it is back to normal.

Here she is after completion next to my Master-Touch.

Makes a nice fire pit

Anyone chop a 22? I had planned to chop my older OTS 22 once I got my bronze premium. But alas, I had been way to careless (read: inebriated) with her at Brewers games and there wasn't much to salvage. I'm keeping my eye out for a stupid cheap late model or a reasonably cheap older model for the chop.

honestly, I think a 22 is too big to do this with, just my opinion the 18's seem to be a perfect fit.

I'm no engineer but I fear the center of gravity may be too high on a 22 using cut down legs. There would have to be a way to keep a wider base or risk a disaster.

@powermatt99 , build a stand if you want.  Much more stable.  Like this:

If you did a 22, may want to entertain a dual wheelie like Troy did.

Yep, I've done one. Too big? Nope. Not stable? She's very stable, actually; her real job is my 22 WSM bottom. Practical? Eh, maybe, maybe not. But it looks sweet…  8)

I chopped a new 18 OTS down this weekend. I gave it to my son and the grill has been affectionately named "The Hotdog Grill." I bought the grill half off from target and ordered the ash pan from Amazon. This was first time to use the "pinch off" ash pan. Man I hate it. No idea why they got rid of the twist off. I used the article on this site for how much to cut off the legs. As you can see it has a little gangster lean to the front. I followed the directions on the site but I guess the newer models are a little different? It looks pretty aggressive with the lean but I think I'll have to even her out to make cooking easier. I am excited to fire up "The Hot Dog Grill" over labor day weekend!

Nice work, @Tommy B.

@Troy,

In your article you say

"Start by cutting the legs. Make sure you cut the end that goes into the leg sockets!
Front Leg Length: 12.25 inches
Back Leg Length: 10 inches"

I think it is hard to go by overall leg dimension as the legs with wheels can extend below the axle and that extra length is inconsequential to the ride height. A much better measurement would be how much to cut off FROM THE TOP. Can you update it?

I agree, if you cut the amount off the top evenly then there should be no lean.

@Troy are you trying to redelegate work back to me? I cut 7-5/8" from the top of each 18.5" leg. This will get the front leg perfectly to the tip of the 2nd triangle, and the same wheel axle overhang as stock.

Yes.  Sorry.
I didn't save the excess. Heck,  I don't even know if I used legs from an 18

I say, if you've got a spare triangle and legs, go for it! You can always restore it to the "proper" height if you don't like it...

Very generous sir and I'll keep it in mind but I have other projects and priorities for the next few months. I eventually would like to make a midget 22 but I'm in no immediate rush.

This is a pic of the inside where I mounted the lid bale assembly, paying special attention to ensure it doesn't inhibit the path of the ash sweeper.  I used a stainless steel wing nut, which incidentally supports the bottom grate as well.  (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170615/82a6a401827d980cb04e798c7bc78e17.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170615/895c436423c62abe8c5f424abd3798bd.jpg)

I really like the "Blue 22" chop done by Mr.CPHo  Any clues as to how much to take off each leg and off the axle to still accommodate the dual wheels?  Also did you buy the wheels on a website? or did you already have them lying around as spare parts? I really want to do this!

Thanks! I figured since now I have a total of 5 kettles, I should join the club.  I also have a Q1000 and a Go Anywhere so I guess you could say I have the sickness...lol  My latest is the '11 Black OTG that I couldn't pass up on craigslist for $25.00.  That is the one I plan to chop.  In the meantime, I just need to come up with 2 more wheels.

Sounds like you've come to the right place.

The blue 22" midget above uses 8" wheels, not the 6" wheels that came with your OTG.  Be mindful of the difference.

I cut 6-1/2" off the front leg and 7-1/2" off the back legs, and about 3/4" off each side of the axle to fit double 8" wheels.  I also had to drill an additional hole on the front leg, one inch above the existing hole into which the triangle is inserted.

Good luck and have fun.

Thanks for the details. I will be sticking with 6" wheels, so that would mean taking an even amount off all 3 legs for me.  That should also mean not needing to drill a new hole in the front leg.  I just need to ask...did you end up with plenty of room to remove and replace the ash can with ease? or do you wish you had taken just a little less off the legs?  Also, since I'm using the 6 inch wheels (and going dual), the 6 inch wheels are 1.5" wide, whereas the 8 inch wheels are 1.75" wide, if I am not mistaken.  Therefore, it looks like I would need to take off about 1.25" off each side of the axle instead to make up that difference in width.  Please let me know your thoughts.

I'm 5'8" and have no problems using the kettle standing up, as long as I am using long 18" utensils. It's awesome having a full 18.5" with OT that I don't have to disassemble for transport. I also use mine for small cooks at home.

I have the Slow n Sear w/ the Drip n Griddle in my 22.5 it's the bomb & well used. I'm thinkin on getin it & cutin down a 14" pizza pan for the drip pan as the drip pan directs the air right to the coals. Plus keeps the grease outa the kettle like the square pans don't.

@troy, I really like it.  I purchased the SS version and pair it with a drip pan from a BGE Elevated half-moon.  This combo fits perfectly on the 18's charcoal grate, but I also use it in my 22's.

I'll be honest, this 18" SnS basket was an entry level tester for me.  I have no hesitations now, and a SnS XL low profile is in my future, just have to find enough loose change in the couch.

Finally got around to this long overdue project. Making this a shorty was the plan ever since I got it this summer. A big thank you to @LightningBoldtz for selling the grill to me and @No1Agent for delivering to Iowa. I already had the grate and was looking for the grill to go with it. By a strange coincidence, No1Agent was my Secret Santa and gifted me the awesome custom Zav WKC / Iowa handles that this baby is now sporting.  So thank you to all who had a part in this!

question about the 22 with ash can..... how low can you go? what is the height of the bowl?  im guessing about 23 inches with 6in wheels. im wanting to use a shorty for my wsm bottom if short enough.  Do or have many of you used your shorty for a WSM bottom?  if so, pros or cons?

@GrillGuyMosier - My 22 WSM has a red MBH bowl (the mid-section & lid were gifted to me, so I've never had a proper WSM bowl for it). Being a MBH 3 wheeler, it does not have the ash can... instead, I use an 18" ash pan underneath it, and a Happy Cooker internal ash pan inside. I've found that I can not effectively use the minion method for long cooks. Temps seem to get away from me pretty quickly. I haven't used the big WSM in awhile, but the last couple of time I used it, the snake method was the way to go.

I know there are some Fellas that have mounted their WSM onto Performers.  @Jeff has a unique plum/burgundy SSP (not a shorty, however) that has a One-Touch bowl.

I have one (crappy quality) pic from a few years ago:

My interpretation of what a shorty/midget should be. I chopped additional 1.5" after I was done, re reworking/refitting triangle.  Front leg and dually set-up.... ah! looks cool and probably never tip over.  I like to do another super shorty to see how low I can go.

This thread has been a fun read, with some nice-looking setups. I plan to try this for my 22, simply cutting some 1-inch steel conduit. I'll keep the original legs so it can always go back to stock.

From reading this thread, I realized that two legs need to be shorter if there will be wheels. But I don't think I'll have wheels; I'm planning on something to be carried and parked, with simple rubber crutch tips.

My reason for wanting this is to have the kettle at a convenient height when sitting in a camp chair, sort of like an end table for a sofa.

I love to play with tube cutters and I've already cut conduit to make wind chimes (they always ring in minor notes, must be the texture of the metal). It won't cost much to get some pieces of conduit and dink around with different lengths of legs.

This is a nice touch!

Not sure what it’s former purpose was but I’ve seen eggheads mounting mini’s in frames similar and others using wrought iron plant stands and such.

I sometimes prowl through a used medical supply warehouse for cart frames and see stainless steel basin frames that would make sweet kettle carts

Okay so I was inspired by this threat so I had to do mine. It wasn’t a resto, just a clean up on a very dirty 84 18.5. It actually was worse than I expected when I picked it up ( only 15$ ). Had to change to the H style sweeps, upgraded the handles, got a set of wheels from @addicted-to-smoke ( might spend some time trying to clean them up eventually) and spent a lot of time cleaning. Dremel was super helpful in this build. Pulled out a gritty attachment and it ate rust right up for me. Hope you guys like!

I cut some legs for a 22, using 3/4" steel conduit. So DaWeber has a Lowboy version, intended to be at elbow height for someone sitting in a chair, like an end table to a sofa. In this version, the kettle rim is 21 inches off the ground.

Hm, I still have the tube cutter and the store still has conduit in 120-inch lengths and 120 is divisible by 3. Thus I have the StratoKettle variant which stands at bar height. It works as a nice height for people standing around; you don't have to stoop down to it. It kind of looks like some 1960s satellite.

Bought this NIB, for cheap, just to pilfer the parts.  Chromed triangle, wheels, legs, grates, & old style ash assembly all went to other projects.  Since I had a [emoji90]ton of spare parts, I decided to make an upgraded replacement for my original Midget.  A little fabricating, a trip to the powdercoater, and a few minutes for assembly led to:

Those are beautiful. I will make this a priority this winter. I bring my 18 to my friends house frequently for “bring your own steak night”.

I was thinking of using pneumatic wheels. I would guess as long as my wheels were an inch or further from the bowl that heat wouldn’t cause a problem for the tire?  What do you think.

Nothing too original here. I had a matching set of 76-77 18 and 22 kettles with faded gray tops. I traded the 22 inch to a guy in KC and he sent me pics of it all cleaned up and it made me jealous. I went shorty and love it! I have swapped the twist off catcher to another 76 and put on a frisbee sense these pics.

Great for camp fire grilling with or without a grate. Easy to move. We use the cooler ice water to rinse it after use works great to kill the coals and keep it clean while "on the go". Also like to use some old gasser grates like kababs. I love this thing.

To clarify coals go on the ground then get quenched then use some of the water left for a rinse. This is usually many hrs after cooking. I get paranoid about coals kicking back up after we leave. Good looking out

A very easy, effective, immediate and non site disturbing method is to bring a plastic 5 gallon bucket about 1/2 full of water with lid on it.

When done cooking, tong or spatula the hot coals into the bucket of water. They extinguish immediately and you can pack your grill right away if desired.

I didnt mean to advise anyone on how to care for the grill or camp site. I should have been more clear. I was mentioning what worked for me. When we use the shorty it is on the deck of my jeep or on the hitch hauler. I rinse the grill because with no top or even just windows down the inside of the jeep and any vehicle following are covered in ash.

Shorty fan here for sure!

Sorry. I wasn’t trying to be critical. Just sharing another idea for pack up. I was thinking in terms of packing up quickly at a tailgate where there’s not a great spot for coals which I have ran into.

It's all good info, most places I go leaving a spent charcoal load doesnt matter at all but I am sure most parks and such wouldn't like that. With the madness out west cant be too careful about fire safety. (Or porcelain protection for that matter)

A project I’ve long put off, finally got around to chopping down an 18 I traded for a few months back. Thanks for all the pointers everyone, turned it great, can’t wait to fire it on Memorial Day!

These do look pretty cool.  For some reason I just think it needs a telescopic luggage handle that telescopes up so you can just roll away with it like its carry on. haha.
