Post by: Antisven84 on May 28, 2015, 02:35:44 AM
G'day, I'm in he middle of making up a single and double stackers for my kettles, I was wanting to know the dimensions of the 22" smokey mountain charcoal basket so I can fabricate some, any help appreciated.

I believe the 22.5" WSM ring is 17in (43.18cm) diameter by  4.75" (12.06cm) tall. Nice lineup you have there. Are you connected to the Aussies members already?

Ok what about water pan dimensions??
Title: Re: 22" weber stacker
Post by: terrymo on May 28, 2015, 01:16:57 PM
Water Pan 18-3/4" OD x 4-1/4" tall. 3 gallon capacity. Bottom of the water pan to the top of the charcoal grate is 12-1/2". Top of the water pan to lower cooking grate is 1/2". Or use a thick pizza pan in place of the water pan as your heat shield.

Updates, I burnt out the stacker, trimmed off the lip, cleaned everything up, made a charcoal basket and it's currently curing the high temp paint job at work.

Looks Great Andrew. What paint did you use?
What's the distance between the the two grates?
Title: Re: 22" weber stacker
Post by: Antisven84 on June 21, 2015, 11:48:54 PM
High temp paint by ppc coatings, 750°c resistant. 20cm between cooking grates, 10cm between lower cooking grate and original grate.
Title: Re: 22" weber stacker
Post by: Hogsy on June 22, 2015, 12:31:57 AM
Cool, I've been thinking of adding another grate to my roti ring, it'll give me about 6inches between the two grates
Have you thought about this with your charcoal basket? It means you can shake out the ash after a cook without losing any charcoal for the next cook

I generally either let the coals burn out or use them to light a proper fire after a cook. I'll see what other pics I have,

Updates, it had significant leaks and temp problems, I switched the setup into the blue one touch gold with tighter controls, seal the lid and stacker with Rtv red, and attached latches as a final step. I also upgraded the water pan to a ceramic pot base (47cm)

Looks great!!! How well did the RTV bond with the metal? Did you have to clean the rim of the lid before you applied it?
What's the story with the latches? Did it not sit tight on the kettle bowl?
Looking forward to seeing some meat on that blue bad boy
Title: Re: 22" weber stacker
Post by: Antisven84 on July 27, 2015, 05:07:33 PM
The stacker wasn't quite right before nor after the Rtv Red was applied, the latches were probably overkill but it ensures a perfect seal on it whilst adding stability. I cleaned off any crap and wiped down with prepsol before applying the Rtv red.

I'm now awaiting a thermometer dial and hunting high temp grommets to run the maverick probes through with ease

The charcoal grate mod is a must. I really need to do this. I'll have to get some assistance but it has to happen. Every time I see a really nice one like this I get inspired all over again.

This whole set up looked like a fun project - thanks for posting and taking the time to mod!

More updates aka continuous improvement. I got inspired and made a steel partitioner up for a crazy long snake out of junk laying around at work. Should increase burn time significantly.

My only concern is with the Red Kettle. Why does it have plastic handles?
You've got to upgrade to some nice Zavods..
The rest of your stuff is spot on and a great addition to your shed.
It appears you have had the addiction for some time and are dealing with it perfectly!
Thanks for sharing..

That's a cool pic of it all stacked and ready to go!!!
How do you find temp control with the double stack snake? I normally do 2 wide 1 high and find I have the bowl vents on a OT 1/2-3/4 closed to keep it in the 225-250f range

I started with a smaller test to dial in the temped I wanted. I did a 2x2 small run, ended up running at 300°f lower shelf and 285°f for the upper shelf. As this died off I started a new snake and running 2x1 properly.
I suspect I'll be running 2x1 snakes with wood chunks on top with 15-20 lit coals to start with as a final product.
The terracotta saucer is working awesomely as a heat deflector and even better as a heat sink

Alrighty, the terracotta saucer failed and cracked under heat, so I made one up out of scrap steel, it admittedly works great.
A small modification to the setup and I'm pretty set now.

Updated, clamps and racking installed, awaiting handles and wsm grommet now.
It now has capability for 7 racks, currently only 4 though.

Awesome stacker units there!

Pretty ingenious to use the hinges as customizable grate holders!

Progress, the tabs are notched out to prevent them slipping out, it also locks the grates in. Also installed the wsm grommet.

I got into fabricating a new snake partition and tested it, failed miserably due to heat conduction and lighting the coal through the steel

The new version works particularly well, further testing is continuing but with briquettes I get 17hrs using the outer section. And 20hrs using the full length with mangrove lump
Photos are at the start, 4,8,12,18hrs

I wonder why other versions of this I've seen haven't had the same issue of lighting through the steel?  Good job.  I like how you didn't give up on your idea but worked through the problem.

G'day, I'm in he middle of making up a single and double stackers for my kettles, I was wanting to know the dimensions of the 22" smokey mountain charcoal basket so I can fabricate some, any help appreciated.

(http://i1168.photobucket.com/albums/r499/andrew_kelly3/Mobile%20Uploads/A348E3EE-38CE-43E5-87EB-E5F5F707BF2C_zpsnfkjyab8.jpg) (http://s1168.photobucket.com/user/andrew_kelly3/media/Mobile%20Uploads/A348E3EE-38CE-43E5-87EB-E5F5F707BF2C_zpsnfkjyab8.jpg.html)

I know this is a bit off topic but, whats the deal with the table / gasser in the background there?
