Title: Dumb Question

There are no dumb people, only dumb quetions...

And I have one.

So I am wondering if anyone knows anythig about rivets. Specifically the ones that Weber uses for the vents. What kind and size are they?

Also, has anyone noticed that some rivets rust and some don't?

Did Weber make some out of steel and some aluminum?

I would really like to learn more about rivets..

And if you have ever had to repair or replace a vent, what is your preferred method?
Anyone have a really cool substitue for a rivet?

And Brian, don't even think about responding with some phrase that uses the word "tool" in it.

i once inquired with a 'specialist' about rivets.

the rivets they used weren't of the 'pop' variety like are used nowadays, but the pressed/opened style

given the limited space under the handle, replacing those rivets would be a pain in the ass (if possible at all)

Unless you're trying to go completely OME, I'd go with an ss screw/washer/nut assembly. If you can find a smooth screw, i.e. one without a slot, even better.

I know what Weber sends you to replace the vent....but it is not what is installed from the factory.

The best I can tell its a tubular rivet. You need a couple tools to install one..

I have used pop rivets on the bottom vents on some kettle rehabs-no problems that I noticed.

Recently refurbished my Mini Cajun Bandit center section, been using it constantly for 2 years and the pop rivets securing the grate holders and door are still tight, and I'm finishing up a Red Master-Touch Cajun Bandit and R&R'd the stainless steel door and used pop rivets. They work fine for me, I inherited a chit load of my dads sheet metal tools so I have a lot of them.
