Title: 1958 Custom Kettle
Post by: Cellar2ful on April 19, 2017, 03:45:31 PM

After a  2,246 mile journey, I can officially say I have joined the small group of fortunate members owning a Custom kettle.

CURBSIDE CUSTOM (background story)

This 18" Custom was found by member CustomKettle. It had been left at the curb for free in his community in Indiana.  A you can see, he literally threw it in the bed of his truck and brought it home.

Arriving home he did some research to determine a value for the kettle. This led him to the WKC, where he joined the Forum and posted a thread asking for input on the kettle's value. In it, he said he could not post pictures of the kettle. I reached out to him via PM, and after he emailed me the photos I posted them for him. One thing led to another and here we are today. Prior to shipping the Custom to me, he cooked a massive prime rib on it.  When it arrived today, it smelled fabulous unpacking it.

Thank you @CustomKettle. I look forward to creating my own memories and photos of cooking on this little piece of Weber history.
It will be making an appearance at the June 24th, WKC Northern California picnic.

Jim, Congrats. If anyone here deserves it, you do. Without ever meeting you in person (which I hope to) I can say you are an outstanding individual who loves to help others. What a great story, find, and I am looking forward to seeing whatever comes of this story.
May sound "too serious" for a BBQ forum, but I couldn't be happier for you.
Congrats brother. [emoji106]

So cool! Not a faded black, but a true weathered warrior in every sense. Someday one will show up on a curb near me, but until then I'm enjoying every one that falls into the hands of the WKC.

SWEET!!!!!!!!

Congrats.

p.s. I don't think it's '58. 56 or 57 most likely. In 58 it would be a Weber Stephen  Woodale, not Weber Brothers Chicago.

Fantastic save.   How do you arrive at the 1958 date?  I see Weber Bros on the vent lid.

Congratulations on the custom!  I love those more each time I see them!  Will this be a cooker or a looker Jim?  It looks to be in fairly good shape.

I am going to cook on it a bit before any restoration. I don't want to dismantle it and not have it finished it in time for the June WKC picnic. I have too many kettles dismantled now that I need to finish restorations on. Because the prime rib smell is so overwhelming, I am cleaning the inside of the lid and bowl today. Lid vent spins freely, bowl vents are frozen but l expect will turn with minimal work. The legs are rusted into the leg sockets. The wheels spin but are rusted onto the axle and will not come off. Had to ship the kettle whole because of that. The ash pan is missing one twist on hook, one came off in shipping, leaving only one attached. The triangle is rusty, with a couple of pin holes through the metal.  The biggest issue I expect will be on the front leg where the screw for the triangle goes through the leg.  There is substantial metal degradation around the screw/bolt head. Anyone have suggestions on how to deal with this area?

Very well could be. This is my first kettle older than early 70's.

Customkettle had posted pictures of the kettle on the FB site Weber Kettle Fans, listing it as a 56-57. Harris commented on the FB thread, identifying it as a Generation 2, 1958.  Any help in identifying the year would be appreciated ( @harris92 & @Craig  ).

1956 Generation 1 = red wheels and the utility pan had 90% bends

That comparative picture is great. The wheel color difference I got but now I see the difference in the ash pans.  So the ash pan with twist hooks was an addition to Generation 2 kettles?
Title: Re: 1958 Custom Kettle

Look at the bends in the pans.  The one on the right has "hard" 90 degree bends.  The on on the left (not so, like yours).  Also the connection point to the front leg is different.

Generation 1 connection.  A tab (with screw) is welded to the front leg. The screw attaches into the utility pan

Funny thing is, when CustomKettle called me the first night, I honestly had no intentions buying it. I was just tying to help him post pictures and determine a value for the kettle by searching for Forum threads on Custom kettles. It wasn't until the following day I considering the possibility of purchasing it myself.

Mrs. Cellar2ful is very happy it is a 1958 (ish) as that is her birth year.

So, I'm guessing the change from Chicago to Wood Dale happened some time in 1958?
Title: Re: 1958 Custom Kettle
Post by: 56MPG on April 21, 2017, 03:29:53 AM
Correct - here's an account that may fill in some blanks from member @Idahawk

I'll just add this as told to me in an interview , I make no claims to it being fact only sharing information for the sake of discussion.

What I do know with almost certainty  is that George's Father came to Chicago, is seen in the census records as employed as a sheet metal worker and then in a later census as president of the sheet metal works with the employer named as Weber Bros .

The Weber Bros started in the Chicago area in 1885 and built various items over their long history . By the 1950s Weber Bros was a 65 year old company and that becomes important in this story .

Although George's father had been President of the company by the time George Stephen came along he had stepped away as President and HK had assumed that role. George's father was the majority stock holder and so George it was said was an idea man. He was looking for a " home run " product to help the Metal Works. If you look at the Weber Brothers Metal Works Photo of HK and George sitting together they were producing almost all the items pictured , the lamps the table in the back with the phone on it and of course the grills . Early on the grills were low priority HK the President wasn't sold on the idea and George had to go along as the company continued focusing on being a job shop for sheet metal pieces and parts.
As time went on
George was able to market his kettle successfully and more and more pressure was put on the metal works to produce these grills , spinning the parts is slow and labor intensive plus the company located at 108 .N Jefferson was on the top floor of a 5 story loft building.

By 1955-56 I'm told the kettle parts were now being produced and supplied to the metal  works and the company rented the basement of the loft building to assemble the grills . Things were really taking off at this point and the company and its shareholders had to make a decision, go all in on the BBQ with a big investment or don't, they would need a larger location more machines and employees. Not to mention giving up their other products and contracts they had supplied for years.

HK was not big on the idea of spending more money on the BBQ and then .

It was at this time that George's Father dies and everything changes. George Stephen now owns majority stock in the company and has decided to go all in on his Barbecue , HK also has interest and so the two strike a deal . HK sells his stock and buys the machine shop portion of the metal works from George and George gets the Barbecue company which he promptly moves to Wood Dale.  There's also one other issue and that's the name Weber Bros , both men know that in splitting the company the longstanding name of Weber Bros is important and both men want it. It's then agreed that both men will use the name Weber In the new names of their business' and they part ways .

I'm told George took 2 lathes with him when he left for Wood Dale and the Metal Works eventually  relocated to another state with all the machinery from the Jefferson St location.

Anyone have the full dated version of this?

And here's George's home in Mt Prospect today. Fun to imagine what he left on the curb in the early 50's as he tinkered with his early designs.

Maybe stick a smaller pipe (PVC?) in the leg to keep the original leg as a sleeve? Just a suggestion.

I agree with this solution (maybe not PVC, I would use metal for the inside sleeve) to fix the front screw for the ash pan.  I would put a sleeve inside the leg and screw the ash pan into that.  It allows better metal to secure the pan but keep the front leg functional.

The start of the resto looks promising!!!  Congrats and thanks for bringing this story back to light.  As a recent member its cool to see the history of the forums and how people obtain these treasures.

Re: leg screw, I would remove the rust and clean up the legs, then I would fill 2" of the leg at the screw hole with epoxy. Drill a hole through the epoxy for the screw and it should be a solid but invisible repair for decades to come.

Got the lid cleaned, both inside and outside.

As you can see, the porcelain was showing signs of fading with the salt and pepper look.

Having seen photos of members applying Pam to faded black kettles, bringing back the black color, I thought why not try it on this Custom. Once I cleaned all the rust areas, I applied Pam to a small test area.  Wow! I was impressed to say the least.  It not only brought back the black color but enhanced the yellow/green splatter.

In the sunlight, the splatter really pops.

Guess I got excited when I saw the Pam results as at this point I realized I hadn't cleaned the lid vent or beneath it.

I'm not going to polish the lid vent.  I think it looks more original with the #0000 steel wool finish.

@Rub - I got the video you sent me.  Until I read your post here, I could't connect the dots. (lol) I will see if any of my local welding shops know of that method. Thanks.

The bowl vents had 60 years of hard, baked on crud.  I tried using steel wool and all it did was shred it.

3M makes a product called Sandblaster - Ultra Flexible Sheets. The sheets are smaller, really flexible and can actually be folded for use and will return flat without creasing. I find they work perfectly on lid and bowl vents and last a lot longer than standard paper sandpaper.  I used 100 grit to get off the crud, then stepped up to 220 for a finishing sanding. I  finished using #0000 steel wool, buffing in a circular motion.  Also, once I removed all the rust on the bowl, I applied a coat of Pam.

The Pam trick really brought this thing back to life.  Because I still have not been able to break the legs free from the bowl, I had to razor scrap the rust off the legs, then finish with steel wool.

Picked up some PB Blaster today and will see if it can loosen both the wheels from the axle and the legs from the bowls.

Is it just me or is there red starting to show on these wheels?  The more PB Blaster I spray on the axle and wipe off the excess on the wheels, the more it appears there is red paint below the rust.

All kinds of red near the rubber from 9-11 o'clock, no doubt about it.

After four days of soaking with PB Blaster daily, I was able to get the wheels off the axle.  They didn't go easy as I had to drive the axle out with a punch and ball peen hammer.

And after a bath in Evapo-Rust.  The wheels were definitely red but not much of the paint survived.

I could see there were holes rusted through the front leg but once the wheels were removed, here is more damage reveled.

@Rub sent me a video on low temp aluminum welding rods that can fill holes by using only a plumbers brazing torch.  From what I researched, these rods are meant for use on aluminum.  My question to anyone with welding knowledge, can this low temp aluminum welding rod be used to patch holes on metals other than aluminum?  Will it bond to the metal legs of this Custom?

Aluminum and steel usually don’t get along well, you should be able to use a brazing rod to get the job done but I’ve never tried it with anything other than an acetylene torch.

@Cellar2ful I did some research. If a magnet sticks to it it's ferrous and it won't work. I'm guessing on the early legs they're ferrous.

Had a few hiccups in getting the rust off the triangle/ash pan.  Ordered three bottles of Evapo-Rust Gel on Amazon.  The stuff arrives, opened one of the jars and find the gel is almost a solid mass.   Tried brushing it onto the pan and it was like trying to brush buratta cheese.  It stayed it lumps and just rolled around. Same thing with the other two containers.  Figured something wasn't right so I contacted Evapo-Rust.  The representative said they had a problem with a small batch of the gel, where to much of one ingredient was added causing it to thicken to much.  They shipped me three replacement bottles.

While waiting for the replacements to arrive, I tried using Naval Jelly.  1 1/2 bottles later the Evapo-Rust replacement shipment arrived.  The Naval Jelly didn't seem to do much in removing the rust.  Started using the Evapo-Rust gel and had better results.  Because this pan was so badly rusted, I left each application of gel on for about two hours, till it was totally dry (as per the instructions).  I found more rust was removed by scrubbing the dried gel with an SOS pad under running water than scrubbing with a nylon brush (as per the instructions).  After using an entire bottle of gel, the rust is gone.  What you see on the pan are holes and etching in the metal from the rust.

Now, onto the wheels.

These wheels really took a beating. These were the sides facing outwards.

And these are the sides that faced inwards.  The side facing inwards usually suffers more rust damage for some reason.

All taped off, ready to prime.

After several coats of primer, I used Sherwin Williams oil based enamel.  The paint store used a handheld paint analyzer on the small bit of paint that was left on one of the wheels.  I selected gloss finish.  As you can see in the below photo, a lot of the pitting was still visible after the first coat.

I wasn't happy with the high gloss finish and the amount of pitting still visible.  That coupled with the fact I felt the paint color was to brown I decided to sand the wheels again.  It actually worked to my advantage as when I finished sanding it resulted in a much smoother surface.   Went back to the paint store and had them mix another quart, in a satin finish this time.  It took three times of adding more red to the formula until I was happy with the color.  I hand painted the wheels and let them cure for almost a week.

It was a long week of waiting but here it is all together again.  Have to throw one before photo in here.
