Title: I think I have my work cut out for me...
Post by: SixZeroFour on December 08, 2014, 10:37:01 AM
Going to pick this beauty up tonight ;)

At first glance it looks a bit nasty, but if you look at the individual parts it actually looks like its in pretty good shape! I bet with a mini-resto it will be breathing fire in no time...

I'm excited for you as I'm looking for this exact project; well maybe still assembled still..but for free what the heck. My newer stainless weber just lack character.

I've been feeling the same way lately, I love my genesis but the old classic gasser has grown on me especially after seeing some of the killer restorations here with the WKC.

Personally I was happy to see it disassembled - saved me some work! And the lower bbq section looks like it's been scraped out. :) Bonus.

That 1000 will be nice after its resto job. I have one of those but the fire box is toast so I'm going to repurpose the frame and whatever else I can.

...I assume it's a 1000  ???

Matt, you will love it!
;)
I have an '02 Genesis Silver C and an '85 Genesis 2 at home. At work we have a brand new Genesis 310. The new one is nice, but my East/West Gennies will cook circles around it. Especially my '85, 13 SS bars from RCPlanebuyer and a set of heavy CI grates from an old Silver B.

Other than the paint which I plan to fix its actually in real good shape!

And now that you guys have chimed in with good reviews I'm excited to see how it turns out. Will post updates along the way!

Right on - that old Genesis has a lot of potential. I am not hip to the sizes or configurations that the old Genesis models came in but that is one of the smaller ones right? Sure looks like it. In that case that ought to be more rare than the standard size I would think. Given your normal treatment of restorations 604, this is gonna look beauty.....especially sitting next to some red Kettles.

Think it's just the odd photo perspective as this is a classic genesis 1000... and exactly what I was looking for 8)

The wood should clean right up with a sand, and with some new paint there's potential!

Pretty sure the logo is the same as the SS performers and there's one hiding in my garage somewhere...

Awesome grill, awesome price! I've got a free plum Silver C that I'll be restoring this spring. The one thing I don't like about it is the gray plastic side tables/handle. Would love to get the wooden slats installed.

The logo is an easy fix.  Strip the remaining paint, spray the entire front with black high heat paint and then carefully place the plate face down on very fine grit sand paper and rub back and forth.    Good as new.

Good luck with it Matt.  Be sure to keep it flat and not sand too much as you can round off the edges if you aren't careful.  Also, be absolutely sure that you don't use a course grain sand paper.

Thanks Craig, that's my goal. Made a HD run yesterday for sanding blocks and primer/paint to get started this weekend. A genesis gold just fell in my lap as well so I may do some mixing and matching and cherry pick the nicest bits from each.

Will snap some progress shots in a day or two.

That does look pretty nice.  A little TLC and you will have a very nice Genesis.  I really like mine.

Well, making some progress :)

I sandblasted the base and lid sides and repainted them along with the frame. Good old steel wool on the porcelain lid and bingo...

Matt, did you make the handle?  And what is the wood you have sitting there for the slats?

Seeing this gives me motivation to get to working on mine, but with a 10 week old baby at the house, free time is limited!

I also see this one is natural gas.  Do you know what the female connection would look like where the hose hooks up?  I just got a manifold and hose and considering hooking it up that way.

Thanks.

Jeff

Hi Jeff,

First are foremost congrats on the new arrival!!  :)

I did not make the front handle, it's the original that's been sanded back down. Replacing it was a consideration but I don't have a router and wanted to stick as close to the original as possible. The handle cut-outs would have proved very challenging plus the original is in really solid shape anyways. Still needs a little detail work before sealing but it's better than what I could produce :) As for the wood, its oak. It's hard and durable and the color is the closest match to the handle that's readily available here. The original I believe is redwood(?)... Either way, I plan to stain all the wood with a cedar color to try and bring out more orange/amber tone.

I'm not sure I understand the question about the hose... do you mean the connection at your house, or at the manifold?

Edit: I wrote maple by accident! lol oak slats!

Great job Matt!  It looks awesome.   That Logo badge really pops and the hood looks phenomenal.

Matt, thanks for the kind words!

I thought it looked like oak.  I am hoping to be able to salvage my handle, but like you, the rest of the wood is rotted.  I am planning to use cedar as I can't source redwood locally.

I did a little research on the natural gas connections, so I think I know now what is needed.  I'll have to consider if I want to add that as I don't have a line out on the deck yet.

I hope to get a little work done on mine over vacation the next week or so.  Stay tuned!

Jeff

So after a few more weeks I got the freebie Genesis all cleaned up and ready for a photo.... wheeled it into the backyard and then as soon as I went to set up the swing table the plastic mount broke off in my hand. Looks like it's a week or so out and I'm impatient so here are the finished pics ;)

I'm thrilled with how it turned out and will more than likely be selling my newer Genesis E330 come spring...

Here are the frame parts being painted:

Disassembled hood prior to paint and new emblem:

Here's a quick shot of the oak slats cut to length and receiving a 2nd coat of spar:

And finally the finished product!

That came out awesome. I think the best part of it is comparing the two pictures. The before picture is just not a tired old grill. It is a ball of laughs how the grates, burners, etc are all in the box like a POS that it is. The final pictures is like a Picasso. If I was had one these already, i would go back to where i picked it up and show them, hey this was your grill that you gave me for free...want to buy it lol.

Cheers Dave! You know what - I actually had an extra new emblem for a performer here at the house and it turned out to be the same one (albeit slightly newer!) so I was lazy and used that. :)

I love the idea you passed along about stripping/painting/sanding the original emblem so I am going to do a write up/blog post to show others how to do it as well. Thanks again!

The guy who offered it up was really cool and you could tell he wished he could finish the project but it just wasn't going to happen. I have his email address and said I would forward a pic or two once its 100% complete.  8)

I think you paid too much for this one, Matt!  LOL.

Srsly, though, that thing is incredible.  A nicer specimen than mine, which is the same model.  It was given to me by a family friend, and then a couple years ago I happened upon an exact match at the curb in my neighborhood-- a perfect donor grill.  So I tore both down and Frankensteined the best pieces... ended up painting the box and the sides, but not as nicely as you did!

You're gonna love it!  They cook really well (well, for a gasser) and they're obviously iconic and gorgeous.  Nice work.
