If you're like me you end up grilling/eating later than "normal" I have a 1 year old and 3 year old on top of a 60 hour work week. I don't have any lights on my house near where the grill is set up so I had to improvise. I work on cars/toys etc. in the garage when I get a little free time and I have this slick LED magnetic light I use for tight spots in the engine bay. I tried it out last night with the grill and it worked pretty good but I made me curious what others use to grill in the dark. Here's my quick set up last night, it can definitely be improved on!

Mine is very similar except that I have mounted one of those patio umbrellas on the deck railing so that I can also grill in the rain. I've clamped a floodlight to the pole of the umbrella.

I like the umbrella idea for rainy days! Hmmm now ya got me thinkin. I've seen some of those umbrellas at home depot with the LED lights built in, I might have to take a look at those they might be on sale this time of year! Thanks

I wear a headlamp. Easiest way to go, imo.

Have you used this, how's the light output?

Several times. It's not like cooking in daylight, but it does the job.

All the time. I work on my own cars too. I use a Pelican led/xenon and halogen combo headlamp. Looks like this http://www.nationalfirefighter.com/store/p/3397-Pelican-HeadsUp-Lite-2620.aspx.
Fantastic for watching what I'm doing under the hood of my cars and under the lid of my grills.

I also use a battery powered work light on my performer table and a headlight like others have mentioned. Thanks to @Big Dawg 's umbrella comment, I am now going to try and rig up and umbrella holder to my performer.

I end up grilling at night too. a 40 watt light or holding the iPhone in my mouth with the flashlight on.

This is the one I use.

Hey @Vette10R, I used 8" scrap of treated 2x4 (on it's end) to raise the umbrella and keep it from scaring the deck boards. Then I secured it with three heavy duty Zip Ties. It stays up year 'round and I even only lower it when we're expecting 40 mph or higher winds.

I use a handsfree head lamp.

I have the Home Depot Umbrella with LEDs. We've had it three summers, and it's great. The LEDs are powered by a small solar panel in the top, and surprisingly they all work perfectly after three years in the elements.
The lights do a great job of flooding an area evenly, but they might not be as bright as you'd hope. I didn't want sparks or coals getting onto the canopy of mine, so it isn't over the grills.

When I was at Weber, I designed a clamp that would clamp to a vertical or horizontal surface. All you needed to do was slide the goose neck in either of the positions -thus you could clamp it to a table or a vertical frame member.
I took the idea from my 4 bar mechanism desk lamp that mounted the same way. I still have that lamp which goes back to when I started college in1985.

Here's my go to... Lowes, $7.00, clamps almost anywhere. I have two, one at each side of my cooking area.

Call me old fashioned...I got a tall plant hanger, and I dangle one of these from it...

At competitions we have LED rope lights that illuminate most the area. I try to get an early start and try to secure an easy access spot near street lighting when possible.
Home is a 12x12 deck with roof and string lighting from Costco

I use a light switch inside the house that operates a flood light outside of my house[emoji3]

LMAO! I too use a light switch but it operates a porch light on the back patio.

I’ve run power on my rafters on my back porch and mounted LED strips. One is almost directly over my kettle.

These are great, inexpensive lights. Used 2 of those when I had a houseboat. Powered them with a Honda 800 W generator. Great Q'ing lights and double as crappie fishing lights later at night. Still use them occasionally when I rent vacation homes that don't have sufficient lighting for Q'ing.

Here are a couple lights I made.

I've loved,OK, coveted those since I first saw them.
Been buying up clearance SJ with a grand plan for the space. Hey, they're much cheaper than the damn " industrial" fixtures that also come from China.
Just need two more.
In the mean time I use 3 clamp on work lights on the pergola over the grilling area. Move them as needed.

Lol! HFG it really is a split brain on that one. Every time I see that pic my first thought is that it looks too nice to be a light but then it's really innovative and cool looking. Probably the only one on the planet like that. You do have some great skills sir.

No grills were harmed by THIS mod. The ash pan from a junker was sacrificed and connected to a in/outdoor light (similar to the one cellar2full posted) used for keeping livestock & reptiles warm. Then attached to the legs with 100# fishing line.
All the original parts are inside the grill and it could be cooking in the time it'd take to get the coals hot.

Had issues with the ballast in a small WEB, so I ripped out the guts and installed a two-bulb outdoor floodlight fixture. Makes a good barn light. (Many of my kettles sleep in stall #2) I also use it on a shepherd's hook near the grill area in winter.
