Title: Metal Fabrication
Post by: Bubblehead on May 24, 2020, 04:04:49 AM
Hey folks.  I have been on here for years but mostly as a lurker.  Anyway, I'm the Quality Manager for a custom metal manufacturer and I've been asking about making a few parts for grills and have been shut down for 10 years.  Things are slow and they're finally willing to try a few small things.  I know people do not like taco handles so I was thinking handle straps?  Mabe a few things for Go Anywhere?  Dividers?  Stackers?

Any interest that I can discuss at our production meetings?

Thanks!
Jim

I think Internal Ash Pan reproductions would sell like hot cakes around here.

I'd buy an IAP for sure. A stainless  table for the gen2 and up performers would be cool, but provably out of my price range

+1 on internal ash pans (IAP).  I'd be in for two for the 22" size and for the 18" size also.  I can provide photos and measurements on both sizes if needed.

Agreed on the internal ash pan. I would start there as no one makes them that I’m aware of.

@Lilyankee did some legwork on making the replica steel wheels, but it’s  not cost effective unless there is a huge order of wheels. Then you have  the cost of them having to be fitted with rubber treads.

Stainless steel internal ash pan for the win.

Really nice steel wheels that match the old kettles would be cool too.

-Bowl conversion brackets, the ones to use when attaching to a table, they are too expensive for an “unknown” reason.
-simple cross beam attachments for when converting a 22 performer to 26.
Some hardware suppliers want 25$ just to set up an order under 100$[emoji849]
-Affordable charcoal raker.
-charcoal basket with small grid to use with lump hardwood charcoal
-steak brander
-stainless drip pan that doesn’t cost and arm and leg
Man i didnt know i wanted all those things. [emoji51]

I hear you guys on the internal ash catcher.  I'd love a few of those as well.  I'm trying to think of ideas that do not require purchasing tooling.  Like I said in my original post, I'm trying to convince ownership that we should be doing anything with BBQ at all.  We have lasers, punch presses, and press brakes but do not have the ability to roll form.  I realize the majority of us are using kettles so that limits what we can make.  The internal ash pan would require specialized tooling that would cost several thousands of dollars.  I don't know that there is enough interest to recover the cost of the tooling, let alone make profit.

We'ere in the process of moving the company.  When we get settled, I will revisit this with you guys.  A lot of good ideas have already been mentioned.

I can’t find a stacker for a 26” - would buy one in a minute if you can make it affordable

Check out Spitfire grilling assuming he still has a stacker available.  I did a write up on different brands of stackers on the forum if you are interested.  Just use the search feature and look for stackers and my name and you should probably find it.  If not let me know and I will look for it later.

Glad to see another custom fabricator jumping into the mix.  They are always welcome.

-Bowl conversion brackets, the ones to use when attaching to a table, they are too expensive for an “unknown” reason.
-simple cross beam attachments for when converting a 22 performer to 26.

Those plus:

Brackets to retrofit wood handles.  They need those little alignment tabs like factory so the single screw handles don't squirm around.  I have been robbing them off of cast off grills but would rather just buy new ones.

Depending on the price point, charcoal basket + diffuser for smoker duties; especially to fit the Smoky Joe. the diffuser plate should also double as a griddle.  I know a lot of people like the tamale pot conversion but a drop in solution at the right price might attract some attention.  The ones I have seen seem expensive for what they are.

Sorry I haven't been around to update.  I lost that job and will not be able to get anything made because of it.

Diffusers for the kettle gad models! They seem to always rust out.

How about some universal leg kits that fit in the sockets and bolt onto the bowl like Cajun Bandit used to make for their Kettle Conversion kits? One size fits all, 18”, 22” & 26.75”. Icing on the cake would be a lid bale/lock for portability

It's all wishful thinking at this point, if @Bubblehead is retired from the metal fab business.
