Title: Weber original vs. retrofit
Post by: Speedster on January 03, 2017, 08:57:48 AM
Care or not care? Looking on input towards either keeping a Weber grill original out of box, or customizing/retrofitting other parts.
Example u have a ash catcher dish, what are your thoughts about upgrading to a bowl. When u know in fact it was built with a dish. Does it loose value to you members?
It could be the ash catcher, handles, wheels?

Any thoughts in this subject is welcome.

To me it would be a question of age, older more rare = keep original, newer not rare= convert/ customize away!  For what it's worth i have converted 3 18" silver to ash buckets as i like the bucket better also did 2 22" the same way.   In the end tho it is your kettle do as you wish if it makes you happy or makes things easier/ better for you!

It is your kettle, do with it what you want.

It's your grill. You do what makes it work for you. That's it.

Now, having said that... There are some grills that are worth something... not necessarily monetary, but in terms of historical value. A '50's classic, a Seville, a Sequoia... I feel that certain unique grills such as those are worth preserving.

I agree on the old kettles.  But on newer don't hesitate. I recently reluctantly drilled my wsm for a lid therm and I love it. I know people aren't crazy about lid therms but personally I like them. Just an example of the most basic of mods. Also added a lid bale and therm to my dads grill and it's awesome. I like easy mods that add functionality.

Thanks a lot everyone

I go by design. Everything that is one touch is new, three vent daisy wheel bowl is old. There was an overlap in the early 90's when both were sold.

I have a red 85 with one touch, which was considered a premium kettle at that time.

Your question reminds me of my thread when I was starting out earlier this year.   http://weberkettleclub.com/forums/weber-kettles-accessories/to-be-considered-as-a-classic-or-vintage-also-about-pat-pending/msg226325/#msg226325

Just do it …

I think I added value (don't care) when I converted my 1995 red OT to a Gold.

Ash catcher mod on that kettle is a no brainer. There are also ways to mount it without permanent modification. OP, you will get differing opinions on adding a lid bale or thermometer though but you're free to do what you wish with your kettle.

There really is no cut off year. Simple... Is a 95 red cool for you?  What about a new coloured Mastertouch?

In the end, what you think is cool ... That is what's cool.

@pbe gummi bear .  Not sure if you were implying, but there was no permanent modification done with the above kettle.
That is an original ash ring from a 1996 MT rescue.  Used an ash bar supplied from @zavod44 to get it done.

I was totally implying that you hacked up the underside of that kettle and ruined it's value forever.  :P Jk, I know you know better than that. Hell, your posts about it are part of my OTG upgrade article! The comment was more for people that want to add the bucket and don't know there are ways to do it w/o permanent modification.

You may have mis-remembered …. Or, were thinking of the other 2 redheads that I hacked up ….
No problem, dude.  I dish it out …. I can definitely take it.  No feelings hurt here.   ;) ;D ;) ;)

Like MacEggs, I converted a 1990 OTP to a MT by adding the ash catcher.  It was for convenience as I was planning and still do use it as one of my daily cooking kettles.  Also added a couple of Zav handles. @Speedster- I think you will find quite a few members have upgraded their cookers with ash catchers for their ease of use and convenience.

Blah blah blah... bullshit.

It it so simple.  Make a grill like you want.... or buy a grill like you want. At the end of the day, you are the one cooking on this thing.  Do you like the higher legs of the mastertouch?, do you like the colour of the copper or whatever of the premium kettle?

Really... in the end, it's all about you. That's it. No more! No less...  If you're happy with black... go for it

Why not! I've stuck my copper lid on my black bowl & called it my duracell special edition. Fuck it, I'm cooking on my Weber .
