Title: New to the Forums Picked this up on CL, Suggestions?
Post by: jacoblee on March 12, 2013, 02:11:56 PM
Hi all,

I am  new to the Weber Kettle Club.

I picked up a 18.5 weber kettle 1979 with A stamp on wheel paid $20.

There is a good bit of rust on the lips a few spots here and there. Also the screws on the daisy wheels are shot.

Any tips would be appreciated.

Hogsy,

What did you use to clean the top vent and legs?

Your grill looks great!

My bottom vents I think are too rusted I am going to try and nock them with a mallet I may have to buy some replacements off ebay.

Thanks,

Jacob Lee

Hi and welcome, nice find.  You have a bonafide peice of American history.  It is strong and versital.  You'll be able to showcase your culinary skills to impress family and friends and make your neighbors envious.  Be warned this behavior can be addicting.

Welcome Jacoblee....nice pick-up.  With a little work that beauty will be good as new.  I suggest you invest in some steel wool and dish soap and start there.  Also, apply some WD-40 or other lubricant to the bowl vents before writing them off.  Let it soak in and try to work the vents back and forth a little at a time.  If they cant be loosened, you can go the replacement route.  There is also good info in this thread:

Good luck and keep us posted on progress.

Thanks Jacob and Welcome
After I cleaned with a SS scourer ,dish washing detergent and hot water. I used 0000 grade steel wool
With turtle rubbing compound . I gotta say my 18 was in pretty good condition, no rust on bottom triangle and no corrosion on the vent
Other triangles I've cleaned up that are rusty, I usually sand the rust back and  then spray them silver with rust proof paint

Polish up the bowl & lid and toss these parts on there.  She'll look great!

I'd keep the original twist ash pan

Welcome and nice score Jacoblee! I agree with Hogsy on the ash pan. I've got a '78 22.5 brown I use about every other cook. That 18 of yours should clean up beautifully and make a nice cooker.

That's nothing...get it cleaned up.  You can try to spray some kind of cooking oil on the chipped areas.  Just keep it covered when it's not cooking, so it doesn't get rained on.  Should keep the rust at bay.

Lent is starting in the Greek Orthodox Church and we don't  eat meat so I grilled some cheese. This is a cheese from the Island of Cyprus called Halloumi. It is a cheese that does not melt easily so is great for grilling.

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halloumi

A friend brought it back from a recent trip. It can be purchased at some greek and arab markets.

Thanks for all your help getting her cleaned up.

Pick up some 000 of 0000 steel wool and hit that lid vent and the triangle.  Sand the handle and stain and seal it and you will have a fine looking brown 18.  My grey and red twin 18's from 77 looked similar before I cleaned them up.

Welcome aboard.

Holy Shit Brian, did you really just quote Sir Spamalot with the cooking spray trick?
You should ban yourself for the day and be ashamed!
