Ok some of you know the back story on my demo grill, for those who don't, here's a quick recap. I got this grill from my grandpa after he passed. It was his pride and joy and is also mine. I was talked into keeping it in its current state by some members, and I did until now. Since my grandpa had already began to remove the original finish, I decided to finish the job for him. I know it will no longer be original or could lose some value. But since I would never part with it, I thought why not. Here is what it used to look like(http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/15/01/14/02f6b202faa06232c0a4323294a16fff.jpg)it was sanded down and spray painted. Since I've been using it, all the spray paint has flaked off and it's a constant battle to keep up with the rust. Here it is getting sand blasted (http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/15/01/14/0a14cd82916f362a7ccb492c6db5d26a.jpg)After it was down to bare metal I filled the dents and pitts with this (http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/15/01/14/1a3ac643bdd0bd406b7727163dfcd97d.jpg)This is it today after two coats of the filler(http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/15/01/14/fe93597794c33eb0b3bbaa67831e2916.jpg)My plan is to give it a good sanding then off to the powder coated for a new paint job. My only question is about the color. It's will be black, but back then was it a gloss black like today's kettles, or more of a satin like the kettles of the 70's? And just FYI the original demo logo is staying and carefully protected under some tape (http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/15/01/14/df6f6881fc826f4951d79be44b5979a9.jpg)Sorry if some of the purists get upset but in some way I feel I'm finishing what my grandpa started, and he's laughing up there seeing me covered in sand and dust trying to get this damn enamel finish off. More to come , stay tuned.

Good luck in your endeavors. I am interested to see if the powder coat holds up to some heat. I hope it does!

The powder coat will be rated at 1200 degrees. Hopefully that's enough. When its done it will most likely be a special occasion kettle. Definitely not going to be cooking ank pizzas in it.
-
It should hold up. It's got my name on it.

gotta do what ya gotta do

I don't think anyone is going to be upset.
The grill has meaning to you. And its a project that was already started by a loved one.
The legacy of your grandfather, your relationship with him, and the family heirloom FARRRR outweighs any legacy the the grill itself holds.
Keep us updated with the progress!

yep immediate ban coming ;)
youd be best to finish the job and send it to me avoid ban :P
watching with interest 8)

I'm excited about the progress with this one. Keep us posted and if you have any questions, please ask away! :)

Any help on the amount of "shine" the black paint should have would be a big help.

You may want to use the Black Wood Dale Jeff found as a reference (link below).

This. (looks good so far!)

Looking good. I don't know if powder coating is going to hold up. You may want to look into having it ceramic coated by Jet-Hot or similar. http://www.jet-hot.com/

Great work! I can't wait to see it finished.

Thanks for the link. I just sent over an estimate form. They have coatings up to 2500 degrees. That should get the job done.

Should be done sand blasting tomorrow. My compressor is having a hard time keeping up. After that some filler, then I have to decide on powder coat or jet hot. Thanks for the tips and interest. I hope it's worth all the time.

There's high heat powder coat & regular.......check into it first......
Very interested here also....I've had that very can of Argentflame (his real name's Alvin) fill in my hand several times & did not buy.....
My brother told me a tale of automotive people saying that it will expand under heat at a different rate than the original metal & possibly fail.....
Personally, I think it will be fine, esp. after it's coated over with the finish material & contained, if you will.....

Jet hot coating will be up to the task, but it's not cheap. I have had Jet Hot coating on three sets of headers on high performance big block chevys, and all of them have held up awesome over the years. Certain types of Jet Hot coating can withstand 2500 degrees, so I don't think you would have a problem.

If you don't mind me asking, what did you pay to coat your headers?
-
I had mine set done (big block chevy as well) a few years ago. Paid about 200 at the time. Look awesome today still.

Jet Hot wants $350 plus shipping to and from. That's out of my price range.

Just google "ceramic coating your city," or start calling up the powder coating places in your area and find out if they do ceramic coatings (if they don't ask who does locally), or talk to some of the local motorcycle / vintage car guys and see where they take their headers / exhausts to get coated.
