Title: My "cold call" easterner!
Post by: AZ_MIKEY on October 25, 2013, 07:01:47 PM
So in the off topic section earlier this week I asked about cold calling on a kettle that I had spotted. So any ways I built up my courage and went for it. I stopped at the apartment complex parked near the kettle found what I believed was the unit that the kettle belonged to. Went up the stairs to knock on the door and there was a huge gate blocking me from getting on to the stoop and to the units door. I looked around the corner and seen the door about a 3 feet away. Well I reached around and knocked on the walk as close as I could to the door and was promptly greeted with loud braking from 2 dogs that were unseen at the moment then from further down the stoop/deck out of a doggie door installed on the sliding door came barrling at me the two huge as hell dogs ( no kidding my pup is 92lbs of muscle). So I take my steps back down the stairs and wait to see if someone comes to see what the heck is going on. Nobody comes. I spot someone at a nearby building and ask them if they know who the tenants are in that unit he says no. So I proceed to my truck thinking I will return. I say wait dumby write a note and tell them you have interest in an item of theirs. So start writing the note on hood of my truck and I hear noise and talking come from within the unit. So I try knocking one more time. This time greeted by a tenant. I get the hold one minute finger. I wait on the steps for 15 mins and finally am greeted. I explain I am interested in the grill as it really caught my eye and I am an admirer of said grills and have wanted one for some time like this one in particular. She asks me what I think it is worth and I say I am not really all that sure as I don't currently own one like it but would like to given the chance too. So to this she says I have 2 other grills like it 1 bigger and 1 smaller. She uses the smaller one but this one and the bigger one she has in storage. She also has a gas go anywhere too. The kicker she picked them all four up for $20 at a yard sale about 8 years ago. So she tells me here good fortune is now mine and sells it to me for .........

Ready......

Wait for it.....

$5.00!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pics to follow.

So first pics are of it as I brought it home. Ash pan just dirty, wheels a bit faded with spots of surface rust, triangle alot of heavy spots of rust, charcoal grate there but bowed, cooking grate just used and dirty, inside dirty then the outside dirty with over spray white paint on it, handle good shape just needs refinished, vents in great shape, bottoms stop tabs there but bent over, on ding in the lid very small above the lip, porcelain missing in one small spot on lid and just a very tiny area around lid handle. Other than that it is prefect.

That grill looks near perfect to me! It's a funny thing how common the white overspray phenomenon is. It seems like nearly every old grill I get has some, in fact I just cleaned up two today from different places that had it. The metal wheels look like they are in excellent condition. Wow what a grab!

BTW, you need to put that last shot in with the 'Pets' thread.   ;)

Nice pick up and great story. The grill looks in great condition, especially for $5!

One day I will spot a nice grill 'in the wild'. Maybe if I drive around the central coast of NSW. ;D

Clean up pics and first cook on it last night. It cleaned up very easily and fast. I want to work some more on it as there are a few little stubborn spots of grime inside and out and also want to work a lot more on the triangle, need to refinish the handle also. Enjoy here for viewing pleasure I give you the cleaned up EASTERNER!!!

Congrats man. I can only imagine the grin on your face when this all went down.

When she said $5 I almost had a damn heart attack. I imagine I looked like alittle kid on Xmas morning getting that new highly sought after bike that I bugged everyone for the last year!  The best part of it all she asked for my phone number and said she would keep me in mind for the other two charcoal grills as sometime in the future she would be moving into her boyfriends house and he does not eat food off a charcoal grill. I know for sure the smokey is a grass/lime green c&b colored one as I seen it, the 22.5 I am guessing that is the size she says is older but she isn't sure and it is brown she believed but she says she can't really remember as when she bought them all together she gave the bigger one to her parents and they both have since passed and it went into storage. So I might see 2 other grills in my stable from her. Till then I keep my fingers crossed they are in as good of condition as this one and that she decides to pass them on for a the same low price.

I wondering the same thing too.  I'm talking about the entire kettle from legs to bowl (inside and out) and lid (inside and out).
I've read and know the basics.  Easy Off, Dawn, degreaser, 0000, plastic scraper, etc. and I'm not getting quite the results I'd like.  For example, some bowls have the most stubborn baked on grease.  I cleaned one recently and used 1.5 cans of Easy Off and it still didn't take care of it.  It's rock hard.  I'm getting impatient!

One way to get that scraped off black char is with a razor blade. I susually set the bowl aona 5 gallon bucket and take a small razor blade and scrape away. Doesn't seem to scratch it.
It just takes time..Lots of time.. 8)

I use a plastic scrapper to get most the heavy baked on bits. Then close all the vents and make sure they close tightly and a can or 2 of easy off oven cleaner on the inside of the lid and bowl close them up together and let them sit for a minimum of an hour and up to 4. Then depending on how badly baked on or greasy things were I use a scrapper for the worst parts and then a pretty soft light brown/tan colored scotch brite pad then 0000 steel wool. I then rinse them out real good. Then the inside and outside while wet get a good scrubbing with liquid BARKEEPERS FRIEND and 0000 steel wool working it in small circles and making sure it doesn't dry. Then rinse off while scrubbing some more. Repeat this till clean then while wet I dry with a terry colth towel till it shines. I do the inside first then outside. As far as the aluminium pieces I start with red scotch brite pads and scrub till all blemishes are gone then go to a grey pad scotch brute pad then a light brown/tan pad then finish off with 0000 steel wool. The aluminium pieces at this point are pretty shiny but if you want more shine you can use come mothers aluminium polish a start with some steel wool and work till you get to a buffing towel. Or get a buffing wheel set up and use rouge till I get to that mirror shine. As far as the steel wheels on this one I used 0000 steel wool and a bucket of hot soapy water a scrubbed very lightly till rust was gone. Did not repaint. Then spayed a light spray of silicone spray on a rag and wiped down the whole wheel assembly. I spray my plastic wheels with silicone spray also. If gives them a alittle sheen. If I have a steel rivet in the top vent and it is rusted or rust colored, I tape off the vent around it then use my dremel with a little wire wheel and clean it up. On the triangle I use a wire brush to get rid of must the easy to get off rust. Then use varying scotch brite pads to get rust off then finish with steel wool. In hard to get to spots on triangle I use the dremel with a wire wheel.

That's pretty much it I think I didn't miss anything.

[/quote]AZ_MIKEY I took this part and did a little copy and paste with it.  I'm very new to the cleaning up and restoring kettles so I thought this was an excellent post that you made and giving the step by step on how you go about cleaning up your kettles.  I made a title before I printed it and called it "Weber Kettle Cleaning 101".  Thanks for posting information like this as I know for me and I'm sure many others is a huge help.  Appreciate the knowledge you shared.

Wyd, if do some digging here on the site you will find what others do when they are doing restores and cleaning of kettles. I believe there is some very specific threads actually on just cleaning and polishing . I am sure some of the more seasoned grillfellas here could add a lot to what I posted and tell you some other tried and true techniques.

What a great score!!
I love a bargin

To clean baked on grime inside the kettle - I find that a good oven cleaner sprayed on the gunk and left for an hour with lid on in a warm sunny spot works extremely well, with a scrapper to the solid bits, then scrub it with some steel wool and pressure wash it all off (gerni or karcher)
