Title: The NIB 1992 SS Performer: the unbox...
Post by: tattooedant on September 25, 2013, 09:51:22 AM
OK folks... here it is. But a warning to you Performer fans, you may want to be sitting for this one. The whole process this morning was awesome and I hope the pictures can articulate how cool it was to open the box and conveys my own excitement as I found one treasure after another in the box...

Here's the box
(http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/ag64/tattooedant/SSperformerbox005_zps409529c3.jpg) (http://s1299.photobucket.com/user/tattooedant/media/SSperformerbox005_zps409529c3.jpg.html)

Then this morning I finally got to open it. It had that new grill smell.
(http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/ag64/tattooedant/SSperformerunveil001_zpsedf4d18a.jpg) (http://s1299.photobucket.com/user/tattooedant/media/SSperformerunveil001_zpsedf4d18a.jpg.html)

But then I saw this and was like what the hell!...it looked like some type of alien space fungus...so I packed it back up and threw out the whole grill....nah, just kidding...a little SOS and off it came. so far the only blemish.

There it is..

Totally sending this in today

This was in the charbin to my surprise. The grill came with its own cover in addition to the one I got from the seller

here's the 2 boxes side by side. Guess which one is original.

Bottoms up

The vent is telling us O...1992-1993 at least...
(http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/ag64/tattooedant/SSperformerunveil016_zpsdfbfa599.jpg) (http://s1299.photobucket.com/user/tattooedant/media/SSperformerunveil016_zpsdfbfa599.jpg.html)

All the parts were in mint condition, every piece of steel had it's plastic covering in place, everything thing else still had a light coat of oil still on it and was wrapped in plastic.
(http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/ag64/tattooedant/SSperformerunveil020_zps7f5d64ca.jpg) (http://s1299.photobucket.com/user/tattooedant/media/SSperformerunveil020_zps7f5d64ca.jpg.html)

The table was blinding me when the sun hit it
(http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/ag64/tattooedant/SSperformerunveil021_zps8a98d97a.jpg) (http://s1299.photobucket.com/user/tattooedant/media/SSperformerunveil021_zps8a98d97a.jpg.html)

So this not gonna work. Too bad, the tank looks like it's perfectly made to sit in the frame. It's stamped Manchester on the side. I'm going to look up the company to see what they can do. I want to keep and use the original.
(http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/ag64/tattooedant/SSperformerunveil024_zps813b0621.jpg) (http://s1299.photobucket.com/user/tattooedant/media/SSperformerunveil024_zps813b0621.jpg.html)

First time in the sun. It is the most perfect grilling weather day here in NY...
(http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/ag64/tattooedant/SSperformerunveil029_zps0c81e71b.jpg) (http://s1299.photobucket.com/user/tattooedant/media/SSperformerunveil029_zps0c81e71b.jpg.html)

There it is, all ready to go.
(http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/ag64/tattooedant/SSperformerunveil031_zpsa1085db2.jpg) (http://s1299.photobucket.com/user/tattooedant/media/SSperformerunveil031_zpsa1085db2.jpg.html)

Her new home. I think it fits perfectly with my Genesis. I love that they both came out around the same year. It's too perfect...
(http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/ag64/tattooedant/SSperformerunveil037_zpsa7176637.jpg) (http://s1299.photobucket.com/user/tattooedant/media/SSperformerunveil037_zpsa7176637.jpg.html)

My first Genesis restoration. You never forget your first...I was able to sell 3 of my refurbed gassers this week, so I had a little extra scratch to get this SS. It just worked out great that I was able to pull it all off.
(http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/ag64/tattooedant/SSperformerunveil040_zps0cf29ae5.jpg) (http://s1299.photobucket.com/user/tattooedant/media/SSperformerunveil040_zps0cf29ae5.jpg.html)

So now the other question. Do I leave the original cover in the box and use the new one?
(http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/ag64/tattooedant/SSperformerunveil043_zpsa5c9ca2b.jpg) (http://s1299.photobucket.com/user/tattooedant/media/SSperformerunveil043_zpsa5c9ca2b.jpg.html)

Well that was a fun morning, glad I could share it with you all. Now I can go cook something on it for dinner...or maybe I just look at it for the next 24 hours before I christen it...

BTW, interesting bail on the tank. Can you show us how that is fitted to the bracket under the SS lid? My original tank did not have that feature.

Amazing. Thank you so much for sharing. I assume that the original propane tanks did not come pre-filled.  You may be able to change the fitting on the original to get it refilled. A worker at one of my local Ace's told me I could do that & they would refill it for me...

Regarding the cover... which one is sturdier? Keep that one. Offer the other for sale & get some of your $ back. The older SS Performer covers are not cheap.

That is so cool.  Thanks for sharing all of these photos.  And wonderful that it gets to join your Genesis of the same year (nice resto on that one, too!).

Don't be so quick to dismiss that tank as a viable option.  I think I see the fitting attached to the regulator hose, so you should be able to use some thread sealant and attach it.  I get original tanks like that filled all the time, and the guy who filled mine the other day confirmed that they all have the OPD feature.  Tanks do expire after a certain number of years, but yours hasn't been in any weather or under any pressure for all of these years.

I'm also curious about that bale on the tank...  haven't seen one of those on Performers back to 1995.

What they said!  ;D

A good propane shop will be able to switch out your valve on that tank.

Very cool pickup Tattoo and it looks great with your gasser... a little time warp action going on! That original cover is badass too.

The "Performer" cover is the bees knees.  The SS looks awesome.  I'm thinking I need a new Manchester tank as well as mine is date stamped "97" so I don't think anyone will fill it.  I'd like to get an exact replacement so please post whatever you find out from Manchester.
That genesis is also a looker.  Nice job on that.

That's great.  Where did you find a 1992 SS Performer still in the box? I have the new green Performer but admit that yours is stunning.

Here's the shot looking down into the bracket. Does anyone know if Manchester made these tanks specifically for the performer? It's a really cool simple  idea to give the tank a handle to lift it out of the frame. Once I slid the tank in, the handle just folded down out of the way.

handle up

handle down

it looks like it'd be a real easy thing to make with a vice and some steel wire. I can take measurements if you want to make one.

I wouldn't be too sure about that.  Yeah, they all have the OPD valves ~ now.  Not in 92'-93'
Still, if it were mine, I'd absolutely try and get it filled.  I'm certain my local lumber yard would hook me up with it.

Tatoo ----- thanks for all the pics.  The charcoal and the included cover are simply amazing!  I'm in the need of a cover, so if you wanna sell the other one for fiddy bucks shipped, I'll take it.  (That's what getting one from Weber would cost)

Yep, my new grail is a NIB ss performer.  I don't care about color just need to have that experience.  So incredibly awesome!! Congrats.

As far as the tank goes, I had a problem getting mine done.  It had to be re-certified but they would only do it if it was used for work purposes only.  So...I told them its for the shop at work, like sweating pipes etc. and they re-certed it and fill it.  If they know its for a grill around here they won't fill it.

I am having a bitch of a time getting this tank recertified. No one around here will even touch it. Thing is clearly stamped 1992. so everyone I spoke to said they can't do anything on a tank older than 12 years. There was this one shady welding guy who said he could do it "this one time"...

I called Manchester, and customer service over there said the replacement tank for the Weber grills is sold at ACE Hardware, the part # is 10054 for the new style and #10052.3 for the quick disconnect. I asked if the tank had a flat back on the top and she said yes, both have the flat back.

Here's the link, but it is $55. Of course to save money I'd have it shipped to the store, but at this point, its looking like I'm gonna have to bite the bullet and buy a new tank if I want to use the 5lber. Unfortunately the picture of the tank doesn't show the flat back.

http://www.acehardware.com/product/index.jsp?productId=21226816 (http://www.acehardware.com/product/index.jsp?productId=21226816)

Another option is that  I have the adapter to refill 1lb tanks from a 20lb, but I don't know if you can do it the other way around. I would have to put the 5lb in the refrigerator overnight to get it really cold and hook up a room temperature 1lb tank. The difference in temperature pulls the LP out of the warmer tank into the colder tank. Works great with a 20lb tank into a cold 1lb. Anyone ever try it backwards and can you do multiple tanks?

Getting recertified would probably be more expense than it's worth.  What about just getting it filled?

^So the main problem is the date on your tank and not the "star" valve on top?
My tank has the triangular valve so I'm good there.

I'm going to try and get mine refilled.  It's dated '97 but my bro in law says he knows a few spots that he feels will do it.
If not, a new tank may be the only want to go.
I don't know for certain but my guess is that a recert on a tank is not going to be cost effective.

Here's what I've learned so far. Although the OPD is a fire regulation, states still have their own regulations regarding propane refill. A state like NY doesn't mess around and will always err on the side of extreme caution, just look at our recent automatic weapon ban, but I digress. Essentially there are 3 rules around getting a tank refilled. This is from Amerigas' website.

1) An Overfill Prevention Device (OPD) is required on all vertical cylinders between 4 lbs. and 40 lbs., if the state where you are filling the cylinder has passed a law requiring an OPD. An OPD is currently required in most states. An OPD is a specially designed float device that prevents accidental overfilling, which can cause undesirable gas venting. An OPD valve also stops the flow of gas when a cylinder is not connected. For more information, please visit the National Fire Protection Association Regulations homepage at http://www.nfpa.org.

2) Cylinders must bear a manufacture date within 12 years of the date present, or bear a new date followed by the letter "E." This date means that the cylinder is qualified for an additional five years.

3) Cylinders must be equipped with collar and foot ring that are in good condition.

So basically the oldest any tank can be is 17 years old. I will be making mine a lamp...

I think your idea of refilling it from a 20lb tank could work, if you can piece together the proper connector. Ice fishermen do it with one lbers, as you alluded to earlier.

As for recertification on triangular handled tanks, I don't believe there is a limit on the number of times it can be recertified, so there isn't a 17 yr limit, at least not yet.

FWIW, I got the tank on my SS Performer recertified when I took it to get it filled. It already had the OPD valve but the dealer insisted on replacing it anyway. The recert itself was not that expensive but they charged me $17 for propane! The total bill was $44. Still less than the new tank from Ace. You can also find these tanks on Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/Manchester-Tank-10054-ACME-Vertical/dp/B000243QA0

Another option would be to use the disposable cylinders. Start with an adapter like this: http://www.amazon.com/Camp-Chef-Disposable-Bottle-Adapter/dp/B0002YSY20 and if you have the quick connector on the regulator, you either need to upgrade the regulator or use an adapter like this. http://www.amazon.com/Mr-Heater-Propane-Connect-F276334/dp/B000AMAVAM/ (Or maybe a propane dealer can change the quick connect nipple on the regulator to a standard connector.)

Or forget about the built in propane burner and get a H-F weed burner/flame thrower. http://www.harborfreight.com/propane-torch-91033.html It will get your coals going!

You should be able to fill the tank yourself with another 20, though it wont fill completely.
