Thanks to @dgodwin for posting this. And thanks to @Troy for closing the Online finds section to the public. The transaction went down without a hitch. No trolls to screw it up. :) I am really excited to add this to my collection.
I think it will clean up really well. I will post more photos as I restore it. It does need the knob that turns it on and off. I'll have to research it to find one that matches. I also need to get a zavdle for it.
Thank you to everyone for cheering me on during the pickup.

Very nice, never saw one before. Call Weber and tell them you want to register your grill and see if they have parts yet! Lol
-
Ahhhh. the old EG 400.....great old cooker !!!!!
-
I'dove to try one of these out. I blew an opportunity on a black one two years ago. Congratulations! That's a sweet yellow!
-
GRATE pickup Dan! That's a goodie. I had a red for a short period of time. I got to fire it up once. Fire it up at night and post some pictures. I assume it will turn orange like a yellow charcoal kettle?
-
Is there much information about these? Dates produced? Literature? Any help I can get will be greatly appreciated. This one appears to be put together "caddywampus"
An observation. The lid vent has the Pat. # on it but that patent is for the leg sockets which this kettle doesn't have. ;)
-
awesome score!!
have you turned it on yet? i really want that thing to work
-
Hey Dan, nice score for sure!
Here's what we all want to see from you.
(http://i442.photobucket.com/albums/qq142/A_Tame76/red%2018%20electric/002-1.jpg)

Sorry I didn't get a chance to fire it up tonight. A 14 month old plus a 2 week old equals not much time for anything else. I'll pug it in tomorrow night and get some photos. :)

I'd get my miney back !!!!!

SCORE! You can get a 3d printed knob (Yes, I am serious.).

Do you know, or does anyone here know of someone with this capability? It would be great to get an exact match. For now I am going to look at the hardware store for a knob that will fit.
-
It's a double graill! A Yellow AND an electric.
-
@Jeff @harris92
Is there anything you can tell me about taking this grill apart for cleaning? does the element come out easy? Are there any tricks I should know about or things to be careful of.
Thanks for any help.
Also Jeff do you have any close up pictures of the grease catcher? Mine is missing so I will need to make something.
-
@Dan NY
Hey Dan,
I emailed you an instruction sheet. It took only a few minutes to assemble. Here is a pic of the one I had. I traded it in a three way deal.

Dan that is so cool, and the fact that its yellow pushes it over the top! What a great way to start off "hunting season" ;)
-
thanks six!
dan that's just awesome. so glad you ended up with this!
-
Great find Dan!!! A knob of a genesis should fit at least they do on the gas kettles and it looks to be the same D shape

Yeah, shoot me a pm. Basically you will need to find an original knob, model it in cad, then have it printed. Printing costs vary by part size, material, resolution, etc. There are alot of services out there that can also do this for you. http://www.shapeways.com/ is a good place to start.
-
@Hogsy Thanks for the tip about the knob. I picked up a generic black one at Ace today to use to try the grill out.
I dug the grease caked lava rocks out of the grill and scraped some of the gunk off of the pan. I plugged it into the outlet on the side of the house and turned the knob. The light came on and the element started to smoke. I put the lid on and waited for it to warm up.
I soon realized nothing was happening. I looked and it appeared that the light was off. When I took the lid off it was obvious that it wasn't heating. I assumed that it must of been too much load for that circuit and had popped the breaker. I carried the grill over to the electric service pole where I have an outdoor outlet on a dedicated service. I plugged it in there and it immediately tripped the GFI protection button.
I took the element pan out of the grill to clean it up a little more. While it was out I tried plugging the grill back in. This time it did not trip the GFI reset. This tells me that there might be something going on with the element.
Does anyone have any ideas or help?
Thanks,
Dan

@Dan NY
Hope these pics help. My red electric is an 18. I'm not positive if your grease cup should be a different size since yours is a 22. Here are some measurements too.

@Jeff Thank you very much for those photos. Mine is also an 18.5 but it is a different model number than yours. I am hoping that I can find a stainless dish similar to your grease pan and then I can make the holder by bending a piece if stainless rod. Could you get an approximate measurement of the diameter of the rod that makes your holder? Thanks.

Dan, maybe it's been so long since it was fired up, it was just rarin' to go !!!!!
Seriously, though, I've had different old style heater, hotplates, fryers & things that are like this......sometimes, they are just finicky when you start them up after a dormant period......
If it does go out, there are places these things can be found......this place has 215 items on the bake / broil element list, a lot don't have pics, but there are old-timers that take one look at stuff like that say "Oh, yeah...there's one of those in back...."
https://www.appliancepartscompany.com/catalog/RAOE/
And, I bet I could find that exact knob in a 2nd hand store on an old floor heater......this is America, these things are still out there, just like the kettles.................
-
If it's tripping your GFI it might be grounding out somewhere , look for cracks or damage where it might be arcing against the bowl , check the cord for damage as well .
" Esto Perpertua "

That's ther other thought I had, but was electrically challenged for a moment..... :o

If someone has data for this knob contact me, we have eight of these machines.....

I think you are right. It never blew a breaker, it just popped the GFI. I think I'll make sure the wires are not shorting on anything and then I'll plug it into a non GFI outlet to give it another try.
If it turns out that the element is bad, I found a place that makes custom elements for old electric ovens that are long out of production. Maybe they could make me a new element.

I would guess Weber originally sourced these from another company who also supplied other manufacturers. So I bet you are right. There has to be more of these knobs out there somewhere.
Thanks for all the help everyone. :)

@zavod44
If Jeff could remove his knob and take detailed measurements and photos, would that be enough for someone to create a CAD drawing? Or would they need to have a knob in front of them to draw it?
-
I could have someone here make it. Jeff who has one?

@zavod44
Jeff me
-
Well that's easy....
-
Well I gave the grill another try today.
I found an outlet that wasn't GFI and tried it there. This time it worked fine and heated up nicely. The only thing I noticed was that one area of the cord got quite warm. I wonder if there is a weak spot in it and that was causing the GFI outlets to pop. It appears to be a fairly common cord so I think I can get a replacement at an electrical supply store.
I'm really excited that there isn't any major problems with it. Now it's time to order a new Zavdle for it and get on with the second "R". 8)

On this one, I'll I.O.U. it to Brian...... 8)
not to be speaking for him, but if we get Jeff's knob measured (yeah, I know) & the construction of that becomes space-age, maybe the handle could send along with.....?

@1buckie
Thank you so much. I would really appreciate it. I am more than happy to pay for the shipping and make a donation to the site for it.
I have some antique American Chestnut boards that came from a barn on the old family farm in Connecticut. I think it would make some really nice looking handles. I have to talk to Brian, but if he can make some handles out of it I will be sure to return the favor to you.

Gotcha.....we'll get it worked out..... ;D

@Dan NY
Here are those close ups of the grease cup holder with some approximate measurements.
PS...me and @zavod44 Brian are working on that knob controller for you. I was gonna give it to him today when I saw him but we both got sidetracked by other Weber stuff. Sorry. I'll try and get it to him by next weekend.

Wonder if it would work?
http://www.charbroil.com/universal-fit-grease-cup
-
@Jeff Thank you very much for those photos and measurements. I think I can make one of those fairly easily by bending a piece of 1/8 or 3/16 stainless rod. I haven't found a place locally yet to get the rod, but I have a few more places to look. As for the gease cup I am not sure where to get one. I found a small aluminum cake pan that is the right diameter but is to deep. Maybe I could cut it down and flare out the edge some how. Anyway it is going to be a fun project.

Thank you to both of you for helping me out with this. It must be pretty cool to be able to get together with other WKC grillfellas on a weekly basis to talk Webers. :)
P.S. I'm really looking forward to holding my new knob ;) (I couldn't resist)

I bet it would work. I see there is a phone number to call about other grease cups. Maybe they offer something even closer to the original.
Thanks @1buckie

From the catalogs on this site I see not an EG-400 but an EG-420 in the '74 and no mention of electric kettles in the '72 or '73.
The '73 is interesting as it pegs Yellow as a new color that year for the 18 and 22 charcoal models.

There are some pretty neat filaments out there that look like metal. Not sure how they would handle heat though. If you need help getting it machined I may be able to get it done at work.

That is amazing. Thank you so much for helping me with this. It is truly awesome. :)
I didn't know that something like this could be machined out of plastic. I don't fully understand 3D printing, why do you think it is not the best option?

@mhiszem thank you for offering to help out with this project.
-
I can machine it. That's not the issue. 3D print looks like shit. It's not nearly as good as machining. Plus if I machine it I can make it out of anything I like. 3D print will be whatever the machine makes it out of. Which is ABS. I'll show you the 3D printed one next week....

Okay here is the printed part. There is still stuff I need to do to it, it needs a brass sleeve in the back and a set screw. I also have some spun stuff at work I could cut and insert. I don't have any almond colored material either, but this is how it looks.
-
That's really slick, Brian! Kudos.
-
Looks good! Did you 3d scan it then print it or just model it?
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
-
The scanners we have aren't nearly good enough for that kind of work. We just measured the original and drew it up.....
-
That is really cool! :)
-
Oh ok, most of the stuff we scan are much larger than that also. We don't have a 3d printer so we have not printed very many items that we have scanned. I am curious how accurate a scan would be if you were to try to print one.

Handheld metrology scanner arms are good to +\- 25um or .001". Generally the model generated from the point cloud will still need to be cleaned up. It doesn't perform that well on sharp edges either.
-
Got it, thanks. We primarily use our 3d scanner for 3d compares of parts. Haven't been able to justify 3d printer yet. It is great that it is so easy to have something recreated so quickly.

@zavod44
Thanks, I have been really busy too so I haven't had any time to work on this grill other than to start cleaning up the outside a little.
The paint on the legs and pedestal are quite faded and worn. Should I just clean it up, or should I do a full re-paint?
-
My pedestal was fine, but I did have to sand down the legs and repaint them. They were flaking badly with loose paint.
-
I'm a guy who personally likes things original, but that is just a matter of preference. I think a 1970 GTO judge that's all original is really cool even though it's got a few rough spots, it's 100% original. The restored ones are cool and incredibly nice, but for me an all original, even with a little faded paint is more intriguing.....but it's a matter of personal taste. A completely restored Judge is fantastic too...

I have to agree. I have a 1972 Jeep CJ5 with an original V8, first year they came that way. It is all original. Lots of dings and dents, even some rust spots, but overall in good solid shape. When I got it all of my friends wanted me to restore it, jack it up with big tires and make it into a "Badass Jeep". I decided to leave it original and just enjoy it the way it is. That was the best decision I ever made.
