Title: First Restoration, *pics* first RRR complete....
Post by: bcmillerkcco15 on September 22, 2015, 03:00:53 PM
First resto I have ever tackled, after doing some research I believe I have a 1993 (dome lid stamped P) Performer SS. Today I disassembled and started cleaning the dome lid, following advice from the WKC awesome tutorial. While cleaning the lid I found some spots that can't be removed, they almost look like circular light discolorations in the porcelain enamel. Is this damage to the enamel?  Can it be repaired?  What's the best course of action?

Have you tried using the razor blade method?

crumbsnatcher, that's the method I've been using all day. Been using simple green, razor blade scraper, and 0000 steel wool.

@bcmillerkcco15 "Razor Blade Method" way to go I did one not long ago and turned out wonderful for my aunt and uncle. It was black but same "RRR" idea. This is the link to my "RRR"

Spray some oven cleaner on it and let it work for several minutes. Then take some steel wool and scrub the spots good. Make sure you wear gloves. I cleaned one up without gloves and the tips of 3 fingers were raw when I was done. Will never do that again.

If that don't take it off, just rinse it good, dry and start cooking. The new grease/smoke/ash will cover it up soon enough.

@Shoestringshop, that is a fantastic RRR, at this rate I will never get my lid that clean....thanks for sharing the link, looks like lots of helpful hints in there.

I would do the razorblade method, it works great and WAY better environmentally than oven clean, that crap is soooo bad......

Welcome to the club @bcmillerkcco15! That's a sweet red ss performer!
I'm not sure about inside the lid there maybe someone else can comment on that.

As far as the two different colors, what it looks like to me, is you have a "two-tone" or "fade" paint job there. (If I'm wrong here, please someone step in)That's how it came from the factory and each kettle painted like that is slightly different from the next. Some have larger more pronounced fades than others.

A lot of people here really like the two tones, there are also reds that are just solid even colored. What's great about the Reds though is when you fire them up, they shift colors to a darker shade, it's awesome!

Good luck on the restore, and don't forget to post pics when your done, and when you fire it up!

That is not damage just grease and sometimes it doesn't all come clean.  The lid has what is called a mist or a darker band of Red, some colored kettles will have the mist on the lid and bowl and some just on the lid check here http://weberkettleclub.com/forums/weber-kettles-accessories/the-red-gang/

Thanks, @1911Ron I was worried that someone had tried to repaint the dome. After seeing your fleet I'm thrilled to add this "Red Band" to my go to 22" red premium.

@WNC Thanks for the input!  I've got a red 22" premium that looks awesome when brought up to temp!  I'm glad to know the paint on this performer is not a spray paint cover up.

Sweet looking Red SS and great job so far!

That's some nasty buildup in the lid! With gunk that bad you literally dull a new razor blade after just 1/4 of the interior... it will continue to work but its not sharp :) Swap in a new blade and hold the scraper at a fairly sharp angle when attacking those bits and it should come right off.

And yeah skip the oven cleaner - that stuff is really nasty! Stick to the razor blade 8)

Keep us posted on the progress [emoji106]

@bcmillerkcco15 it took me about 1.5 weeks to get it done but only used "Dollar Store Mean Green", "Razorblade Method" and "0000 Steel Wool" to clean also some soap and water to rinse out. Looking at yours its in much better shape then mine was. Don't rush and yours will look Fantastic! :).

Also be very careful with the "Steel Wool" you can really do some damage with it @MrHoss did a write up on this a bit ago. I had a similar issue with a blue, but didn't do a write up.

Slowly making progress.....lots of razor blades and simple green.
Gave the dome lid a good cleaning, I'm really excited with the "Red Band" tone so far. It will look fantastic when the bottom is cleaned. Of course, knowing how much time I've spent cleaning the lid, the thought of tackling the kettle bottom makes me cringe...it appears to be a 10-12 beer project.
Anyway, wanted to share my progress and as always thanks for all the help and advice.
Also wanted to throw in some findings, although I'm sure they are tucked away in the forums already..
All hardware inside dome lid (lid handle attachment) is standard 3/8"
All hardware holding kettle bottom in the performer frame and all hardware that holds the LPG assembly inside the bottom kettle is standard 7/16"
Mine were so thickly covered in gunk it took some trial and error to peg the sizes...

Wow, that is a major difference in color between the top and bottom.  My red SS (ER - 1996) is the color of your kettle, but when it gets hot the entire thing and more the lid than the kettle turns the color of your lid.

In case you need to replace your propane tank, Ace Hardware has one online I just bought for mine and it works perfectly.  http://www.acehardware.com/product/index.jsp?productId=21226816
My performer came with a larger tank that just sat on the wire shelf when I bought it used.  I've heard a lot of people having problems getting tanks refilled due to age and my tank looked very old, plus I wanted a smaller tank that would hang from the grill and not take up as much space.

Looking good!

Simple Green won't cut that baked on stuff. If you get a can of Oven Cleaner, Easy Off, (don't buy the cheap brand, it don't work as good), you could of had the lid and bowl done in a couple hours. Take the Aluminum ash Ring and bucket off so the oven cleaner don't mess it up. Spray it on, let it sit for awhile, then use an SOS Pad or scrape it off. Repeat if needed till clean. Wash with soap and  rinse it good with water. Makes the job so much easier!

Kettle is clean, lots of razor blades, 0000, and simple green. Pretty amazing how good these things look after years and years of punishment. Next will be cleaning, polishing and reinstall the ash sweep. I was very fortunate that the thumb screw came out easily. The ash sweep handle was a chore, lots of soaking in WD40 and coaxing with a hammer and flathead screwdriver. I purchased a 7444 to replace the existing sweep and handle, but after looking at the originals I think they can be cleaned, polished and reused. Do you guys prefer to use the new 7444 modified or reinstall original equipment?
As always, thanks for checking it out and offering advice.

Looking good so far. I've found the razor blade method effective, but on the tough stuff, I prefer a 10,000RPM wire wheel ($10) on a 45 degree die grinder. I look like I just stepped out of a coal mine, but the kettle looks like it just came outta the box.

@crowderjd, thanks!  I used simple green and 0000 steel wool on the really tough spots and warm water with a heavy duty magic eraser on the rest. Around the letters and inside the stamped letters I used an unsharpened pencil tucked inside the steel wool to move around the letters and inside the engraving.

@bcmillerkcco15  "You should be using a partial mask". Oh wait, real men inhale the dust. Heck, I even take the safety shields off my cut-off wheels. Safety be damned when there's accuracy needed!!!
I'll put the ShopVac hose in near where the dust is flying. Since that makes it a two-handed job, I rest the kettle in a plastic garbage bin.

@bcmillerkcco15  if your sweep hardware is in decent shape i would use it, i would put a small dab of anti seize on the thumbscrew so later on down the road you can take it apart easier. That cleaned up great, well worth it.

@1911Ron Thanks for the advice!  I think I will use the original hardware, it'll take some work to get cleaned and polished, but otherwise it's in great shape. Plus I know it will all go back together without me having to fiddle with the 7444 sweep...plus I'm saving my money to use on some of @zavod44 custom wood handles.

Nice that you were able to reuse the One-Touch sweeps. I've not been able to do that with any of the ones I've restored.

@swamprb Thanks!  I was really fortunate, the guy who posted this performer on Craigslist took great care of this thing. The biggest problems I've encountered so far are just years of grease and grime removal. But for 40 bucks, I'd say I hit the jackpot.....

You've got that kettle looking like new! Great job and write up, I'll have to try that pencil trick on the vent.

So....trucking right along SS Performer frame, broken down, cleaned, and sanded ready for primer.  I've been looking around, rustoleum has a line of spray paint labeled "hammered" it has a hammered finish, kind of looks like the dome lid finish on the Weber. I know the purists will have a fit, but I'm thinking it would make a nice match (in black of course) Or should I try to match the original gloss black?
While I think on that, I polished all the original hardware, still have several sessions before I'm done, but they are cleaning up nice for being original 93 model.
As always thanks for checking it out, and all input is greatly appreciated.

@bcmillerkcco15 -  I was just working on my second RRR last night on a kettle I picked up over the weekend.  On this one and my SS performer the bottom was really easy compared to the lid.  I used easy off on the bottom part of the kettle on both and it was a breeze.  Last night I gave up on my lid and decided to just burn a really hot bed of coals in hopes of the carbon build up in the lid freeing up a bit.  It worked a little but is going to need a serious round of razor blade scraping.  With the bottom I wanted to clean it up to see how the leg welds, vents, etc, looked.  With the lid, I know that is in pretty good shape and is just going to get a new round of carbon build up after a few cooks.  Your persistance with you lid is motivating me for a second round! I'll post pics of my RRR once I'm done!

@MikeRocksTheRed Thanks!  I know the struggle on the top dome lid, I know it's somewhat frowned upon...but I broke down and used EasyOff on the lid, and lots of fresh razor blades and 0000 steel wool. Can't wait to see how yours turns out after a second round.

@bcmillerkcco15 -  I tried Easy Off on a spot.  It really doesn't do anything to losen up the carbon build up IMHO.  I'll probably take the second whack at it this weekend while I am smoking something on another grill.  I know it will clean up nice, I just don't want to put the time into it on a weekday!

@MikeRocksTheRed I was having a real hard time getting the area around the damper holes, I soaked them overnight in EasyOff and that crap just slipped right off with a razor blade. Either way, best of luck, I look forward to seeing the progress.

@bcmullerkcco15  I'll have to try an overnight soak.  Luckily the area around the vents was already flaking off so that part was no problem.

The hammered might look pretty good, if it were me doing it I would do another piece of metal to get an idea of what your cart would look like. If you know already then go for it!

@1911Ron definitely good advice, I'll try a test piece to see if I like the look before I paint the entire frame. I have an old craftsman vice I refinished and painted with the rustoleum "hammered" and it turned out great.  I think the finishes will compliment each other...but I don't want to stray too far from original...

It's your grill do it the way you want, others have modded their grill so why not?

It's been awhile since the last update, today I finally had time to put it all back together. Before I dive in to the finishing details, big thanks to Brian, @zavod44 for the custom handle, lid rollers, vent damper, and table top handle. They turned out great, Brian does fantastic work and it just made the whole project pop.  So, I know that I was very fortunate in finding a really well cared for code "P" Weber Performer SS, but I'm really pleased with the finished product. Complete tear down, removal of 22 years of grilled on gunk and grease (thanks to the advice from all who commented) I went through lots of simple green, razor blades, and 0000.  Cleaned and polished all stainless steel and aluminum. Was fortunate enough to remove the thumb screw and original ash sweep handle, all were cleaned and re-installed. Cleaned and repainted the wheels(red inserts). Painted and polished the original Weber badge(red).  Sanded, primed, and painted the frame, gloss black and reassembled with new stainless steel bolts, washers, and nuts......I think that's about it. I had a blast with this thing, it won't be my last. Thanks everyone for checking it out and offering advice along the way. First pic is the day I brought it home, 40 dollar Craigslist find...

Looks Awesome! Nice job! I really like the red Weber logo badge. I have a 96 red SS sitting in Ohio, waiting for a family member to bring it to me. I hope my restore turns out as good as yours!

@Harleysmoker thanks!  I enjoyed the red badge project, a Dremel tool is a must have.....
Coated the whole thing in paint and Dremeled/polished all the paint off the parts I wanted exposed.

Can't thank you enough for the custom hardware. Makes the whole thing just over the top.

Does anyone know how I can get my hands on a WKC decal?  I need one to be officially "complete"

Wow. Love the red Weber badge, and the woodwork is unreal.  Wouldn't batman prefer a kettle that is… black, however?   ;)
