Title: What is on your BBQ Christmas wish list this year?
Post by: LightningBoldtz on November 08, 2016, 06:59:39 AM
I was giving this a little thought and thought I would ask the group if you have a preferred wish list this year.

Automatic temp control?
A kettle?  If so, which one?
Accessories?
Cook books?

This is different than secret santa, this is a list of items that you hope you friends and family see so you get what you want this year.

I don't think my mother in law was happy but I told her all I wanted was a slow n sear. Sent her the link to buy it. I said, no shirts, flashlights, I don't care if I get just this one gift. Only one company makes it and this is it. Years past BBQ accessories were purchased that were similar but not really what I wanted. I'm being very specific from now on. My mom just gives us cash. Siblings put names in a hat and draw with a $50 limit. Now it's all about the kids in the family.

Slow n Sear
Pizza stone
Blue SSP
Thermapen

I'm asking for a Thermoworks Smoke and a Glen Blue kettle. I think 1 out of 2 ain't bad, I can probably live without the therm.

We're here!  Thanks for the shoutout!  The WKC has been quiet as far as the Slow 'N Sear lately so haven't had much cause to post.

Things actually are going very well.  I've quit the day job and now focus on Adrenaline Barbecue Company 24x7.  8)

Hope things are good with you as well.  ;)

I was thinking about one of those new Summit Charcoal models without the side table. Then I thought of Harris down in the South and coolness factor.

I'd have something Harris worthy. Say a nice tabbed Red 18 for a Kettleless cart I have. Or a Imperial. A Imperial would live by the front door.

A nice Christmas gift grilling related would be a plainsman in mint condition accompanied by a prime rib to spin and a thermopen. A fella can dream, right!

Looking at getting nice Wusthof or JA Henckels knife sets made in Germany.  Both above $1200 reg., both on sale for just under $500 now.   I think I will get one this Christmas if they go for $300-$350 or lower.   Might not be directly related to BBQ stuff, but it is for me.

As for kettles, I want new dark green OTG or and a new 26".

Go Wusthof. And get the Ikon grade stuff...or better. After Xmas there will be tonnes of sales on stuff down South that will make the exchange rate worth it. Cutleryandmore.com always has good sales and I sourced my stuff from them quite a bit.

I'd love to unwrap a Slow 'N Sear Plus, a Thermoworks Smoke, Thermapen MK4, a vintage Weber wok/"coolie pan" (for both a 22" and an SJ), and a nice, big gift certificate to a local butcher shop.

Not expecting any of those items... which will make for a nice surprise if any of them were to find their way under the tree.  :D

Things actually are going very well.  I've quit the day job and now focus on Adrenaline Barbecue Company 24x7.  8)

I'll have to keep this in mind too because a good set of knives has been on my mind for a while.  The set I got in early 2009 on sale at Canadian Tire was never all that great and the frequently used knives are dull now.  They all have serrated edges too so using a sharpening steel on them isn't possible.

a nice, big gift certificate to a local butcher shop.

Agreed.  This was top of mind for me.  Without food to cook, what's the point of all the grills and smokers and the other stuff that goes with them?
Title: Re: What is on your BBQ Christmas wish list this year?
Post by: 56MPG on November 12, 2016, 08:54:54 AM
I would not recommend getting a set of knives. Too many you'll never use. A great 8" chef's knife is the starting point for any useful collection - take your time and get one that fits your hand - brand is secondary as long as it's high quality. (My latest go-to knife is one I found at a yard sale for fifty cents; an older F Dick chef's knife. Well balanced and it sharpened up really well.)  A serrated bread knife is surprisingly useful too - and rarely in a set. After that, is all personal preference, but I could easily do with a Chef's knife alone. A boning knife is great for trimming large cuts like brisket or shoulders. Again, not typically in a set. IMHO - buying one at a time is the way to go, and they don't have to match.

My two cents. YMMV. Oh, and I need to spend more time sharpening my knives. I'm way too lazy with that.

I agree with you @ 56MPG, if I knew more about these new knives or had patience or enough interested in putting my own set together, I will buy one at a time.  Yes, you are correct! I could be happy with one good knife like this.  Shun Classic Hollow Edge Santoku Knife from the site @MrHoss provided or Wusthof classic.

But I wanted a good set to start.   Anyways, I compromised and got this set.  Henckels Forged Aviara Knife Set, 17-pcs . Not the most expensive set,  but still at  $900 reg. on sale for $229.

Even the steak knife is forged in Spain. One man Henckels international not a two men German made, Zwilling J.A. Henckels, thus cheaper than Wusthof or Zwilling 2 men Henckels made in Germany.

A crock pot with digital control is not comparable to a real sous vide cooker. Not even in the ballpark. Temp swing would be WAY to much. A real sous vide cooker is capable of +/- 1 degree or 2. Which is what is needed for that type of cooking.

Love the time I get to spend with the family but I am looking forward to hopefully getting some BBQ goodies lol.  I cooked my first true low and slow for Thanksgiving and that was a 12 lb Pork Shoulder on my 22 OTS.  My family absolutely loved it and my Dad wants to buy me a 18 WSM now lol.  Would love to pick up

Any kettle other than a new Black OTS lol
The Smoke or IGrille2
Slow n Sear
Meatheads Book

I have an awesome place that is owned by some of my wife's family for Pork ( Nahunta Pork Center ) but would love to find a good butcher for my other meat somewhere close to me in NC.
