Title: Grillfella Confessions
Post by: 56MPG on January 10, 2019, 12:00:38 PM
We all have deep secrets related to grilling. Well, I do anyway. I thought the new year would be a good time to come clean and expose some of them. Nothing is off limits. We’re a forgiving group and no one will lol no matter what you say. Here are my first five confessions. Add yours at your own discression.

I have never smoked baby back ribs.
I use gas about as often as I do charcoal.
I bought a bag of Weber charcoal at full retail recently.
I let my WSM get all moldy inside (twice!) when I forgot to clean it out the day after a cook.
I’ve had a Thermoworks Smoke since day one and never used it.

OK, I feel better...

I have an interview next week with a company that I'd really, really like to work for (they make great products).

While doing some additional research on the company in preparation for the interview, I discovered that they had a logo kettle done for them by Weber a number of years ago.  So, I started searching for the grill and found maybe 1 reference to it on here.  Then, I found one BNIB with a price OVER double of the price of a non-logo Weber.  If I get this job, I'm probably going to have to buy that Weber (even though I'm normally much more of a cheap b@st@rd).

In my early days of charcoal use, I placed ashes I thought were cold in a plastic trash can.  The next day my trash can was a smoldering heap of unrecognizable nothing.    I was lucky my stupidity was not punished worse than cleaning up molten plastic.

Suffice it to say I had a galvanized metal can the very same day to dump ashes, which I use no matter hold old the ashes are.

There.  Now I feel better.

I've mentioned this elsewhere.
But, I've been on here about 1.25 years. Sometime within the last several years before that, I noticed a flea market Weber that seemed kind of beat up & had some sort of weird triangular pan attaching the 3 legs together instead of the wire triangle.  I didn't even bother to walk over & take a closer look because I figured the triangular pan was someone's homemade attempt to rig it after breaking the wire triangle.  Based on the type of flea market, it would have been dirt cheap.

I've never cooked a "fatty."
I don't find cleaning kettles "therapeutic."
I'll finish stuff in the oven that I started on the grill.

Not laughing at all, I do have a question for you about the grill. Was the flea market in Rosemont? I had someone tell me about one a while back and by the time I got there it was closed. Could it be the same? Damn leprechauns you can never catch them.

Well we are all spilling our dirty laundry. I guess I’ll give a few...

Never smoked a brisket 🤬
I’ve used lighter fluid a long long time ago 😢
I’m currently using a Red 1993 “P” MasterTouch as a burn pit 🤫. God help me
I need to post more cooks 😎

I’ve never done a fatty (the Kettle kind).

With two little kids I contemplate trying to score a Gas GA or Q for quick cooks.

I too don’t count cleaning kettles as therapy. I do have some I’d like to restore but it honestly won’t be anytime soon.

I never cooked on my Gray I traded to Joe, glad to see him using it.

My weathered warrior has blown over twice this winter due to high wind.

I have what I consider a good collection, I think I’m at 16-17 and all vintage. I mostly use the same 3 grills for my cooks.

My collection does have an end state and I’m close to it. I’m kind of looking forward to the end of my hunting. It’s pretty tiring checking all the seller sites, estate sales....The ones that are left on the list will take a long time to find.

I’ve never cooked on an open camp fire.

I’m excited to cook on the Chief while also dreading getting it dirty.  Same for my Yachtsman.

I'm NOT 100% positive it was Rosemont, but I believe it was Rosemont.  The seller clearly was not one of the "antique & collectable" types so it probably would have been dirt cheap.  It is possible it was 42nd & Ashland because I also went there a lot at the time, but I believe it was Rosemont.

I haven't cooked a brisket, ribs or pork butt on my Weber. I've done them all on other cookers. I guess my dirty little secret is I've spent more on two accessories that individually cost as much as the grill itself. SnS and an Art Flame insert.

I’m sick of brisket and pulled pork at the moment and smoke in general.

I’ve been eliminating smoke on many things.

I still like some mild smoke on ribs and abt’s.

I’ll come back around I’m sure.

@HoosierKettle I agree, 1 good size chunk of wood is all that's really needed for a cook.  More than that and you might as well just eat the camp fire.

Yep. I’ve been using a very small single chunk. It still has a big impact. Most of the time I don’t use any smoke wood. Just the charcoal is enough for me.

Cleaning grills is not therapeutic but looking at row after row of clean grills is.
With more than twenty-five grills, I rotate "get dirty" three to four per year.
I avoid using my daisy wheels, that may change this year if I choose my pat pend Fleetwood.

I prefer cooking on older, brightly colored daisy wheel kettles

I didnt used to know how cheap you can find webers in great shape. With that in mind I used to make fun of my friends that bought webers stuff. Something like ...
Sure pay $800 for a grill you use twice a year... or you could pay rent for a month and pick up a $20 grill at walmart. I still disagree with spending that much but I can understand it if you keep it for 20 years.

When starting on kettle I was frustrated that they were so deep and I couldn't get the same direct heat I did on my cheapos. (I was worse than Jon Snow...I knew nothing

I own a kamado, i have never used it and I cant let it go either cause then I wouldn't have a kamado.

I reuse charcoal all the time.

Whenever someone wants more than I want to pay for a grill I "need" I ask my wife to buy it cause an expensive gift is nice but if I overpay for a grill I feel it everytime I cook on it or see something cheaper.

It took me about 3 or 4 years to build my jeep the way I want it. I know choose to park in the driveway or street so I have a spot for my $30 kettles.

All the pissing made my hops grow so big they couldn't hold onto the trellis and went from 22' down to 8'. My biggest hops harvest ever.

I use lighter fluid the majority of the time unless I’m cooking on a performer.

I have never used Weber charcoal, though I just bought 8 bags.

My wife is waaaaaaay better at finding cool kettles for our collection than I am.

I rarely clean my kettles, my WSM have mold regularly which I have to clean before I use them almost every time.

I regularly purchase Weber stuff on eBay at a high price and am probably one of the fools driving the prices higher than they should be.

I have cooked on less than 5% of the kettles I own.

That’s all for now lol...

I'm a charcoal guy, always will be, but I've only had Weber kettles for going on a year and this is my first winter with good grills to cook on. I found a gas kettle last summer and use it more often than my charcoal kettles for the convenience especially with the cold. I cook a mean burger and steak on that gas kettle, but I feel like it's a disservice to my beautiful E code redhead!

I only cook for me. My family (wife and kids) want nothing to do with my cooking on kettles. The folks at work love my food, so I bring it to them.

I sporadically rotate my kettles to keep them for getting neglected.

I find it therapeutic and rewarding cleaning kettles.

I feel I am only appreciated at my job. I have no immediate family around me (except the wife and kids, but they are into themselves) because they are all on the east coast and maybe a couple of every once in while friends around me.  Otherwise, I am alone with my VW and my kettles. They bring me joy.

Edit: I have never smoked a pork butt, turkey, and everytime I have smoked pork ribs, I didn’t like them. Beef ribs smoked are good.

I have never cleaned my main cooker besides the cooking grate.

Sometimes I "make" the coals take longer to get ready so I can drink more beer.

My only gas grill, an never-used Weber Q I paid $20 for, I have never used.

I have not cooked a brisket yet.

I don't cover my grills.

I throw away any unburned charcoal after a cook (I know some people re-use it)

I don't clean my kettles as often as I should.

I've mentioned this several times in other threads, so sorry for those who've seen it.

A couple years before joining the WKC, I was at a flea market & saw a Weber grill where someone broke/lost the triangular grill attached to the bottoms of the legs and rigged it with some sort of  homemade triangular pan.  I liked Webers since I was a kid, but I didn't even bother go close enough to take a closer look.  If I had, I might have noticed that the pan was not homemade and way too coincidentally the right size to have been rigged.  Pretty certain it would have been dirt cheap too.

I got a deal on blue nitrile gloves, so I bought a BOX (case) for working on the lawnmower. snowblower, etc.  Also for grilling to keep the raw food germs off your hands so you can go back into the house without leaving salmonella on the doorknob.

I often forget to use them until I already have salmonella, dirt, gas or grease on my hands.

Wow I also had a similar incident about 3 years ago before I was a member here.  I stopped at a garage sale and spotted a weber kettle for sale the sign taped on it said 60.00.  The first thing I noticed was it was greenish colored... Id never seen a green weber before.  The next thing I noticed was it had metal handles on it including the one on the lid.  the last thing I noticed was it had a weird solid metal triangle pan that I thought someone must have fabricated  in their backyard.  Needless to say I didn't buy it because I thought to myself... man that seems like a lot for an old bbq!  Oh well what can I say.  That was before I was infected with the Weber virus.

I was at a garage sale summer before last & the old immigrant (perhaps Polish) who was having it had a grill outside with a very nice VINTAGE flower design Weber grill cover where the cover was in superb condition.  It was away from the stuff he had for sale, so I just asked if he had a bbq grill for sale.  He said no.

I know what street is it on, but don't recall exactly which house.  I try driving by it often during garage sale season, hoping for another shot.  This time, I'll comment on the cover and say how my wife likes flowers, ask if he minds if I look at it.  Maybe offer to buy a new one for him as a trade.  Anything to get a peek at what is underneath it.  I think he moved it outside the garage, just to get it out of the way.

I have cooked on a kitchen cooktop twice this month, and that is a three year high. Only on long rainy days that I just wanted to get things done and over with. (Shrimp scampi and Breakfast for dinner for those meals.)

My oven is full storing cast iron and graniteware that I use on the kettles. I haven't used my oven for a long time.

One of my habits upon visiting Youtube is to scroll to the bottom of my subscriptions to check if there is a WKC video. I curse the days when there is no WKC video.

I usually don't check Online Finds, or Member Sales & Trades. Sorry about that, but I'm happy with other's fellas getting the kettles.

I should toughen the hell up and get back to grillfella business.

- added bunch more kettles into cooking rotation last year, but have a lot more new and never cooked lookers that I want to cook on this year and maybe into next year.

- have done some cool kettle projects and may have few more if I can find time to do them.

- love all Weber kettles, but consider myself a Master Touch, Performer, and non-Weber kettle person.  :D

Holy sh*t! Here I thought I was naughty with 6 kettles in the rotation... but dang man! Are they all functional?

I'm terrified of cooking chicken on the grill.  I've done it once and managed to have burnt and raw chicken at the same time.

I haven’t been on this forum for about a year because I bought a Kamado Joe Big Joe and stopped using my Webers (I have calmed down and back to using my Webers now).

I used a traiger pellet pooper tonight for the first time.  I’ll disclaim that by saying my brother gave it to me.  It was the junior model and I’d never spend $400 for it.   I made a rack of baby backs and the smoke flavor was very mild.

There.  I said it.  I feel like I betrayed my kettles.

Chicken can be tricky. I think everyone here has made some disappointing chicken a time or two!

Other than spraying them off with a hose, I haven't bothered cleaning a single grill until I acquired an 18" yellow last week.

I barely started using a razor on my red mist SSP that, when not in use, had been kept inside a warehouse for several years & before that allegedly inside an airplane hanger (that the previous owner lives in).  But, I quickly said, to hell with it, I'm going to cook on this thing anyway.

I think it's been more than three years since I did a deep cleaning on any of my kettles or gassers. I have six+ in my current rotation and they all get used. I'm lucky if I remember to empty the ash catchers and drip trays, let alone get out the razor scraper.

Ok, I got one. I cooked a big brisket for 14 hours on a Brinkmann one time and I couldn't figure out what to do with the huge pan full of drippings the next day when I pulled if off around 10 A.M. I was tired from staying up too late drinking beers and babysitting the smoker. The air control on that model was just not very good. I said to myself, what the hell, and I dumped the water pan down the kitchen sink  and ran hot water from the tap for about 5 minutes. Day or two goes by, all is well.

Then I'm washing some clothes and the wash water backs up out of the washer drain. I call the plumber, he comes over and says who dumped brisket drippings down the drain? I said man, you're a good plumber. He laughed and said it's not just because I'm a plumber, I also cook brisket. And he had another 150 reasons to laugh that day but at least my drains worked and I found a reliable plumber...

If you, or a friend, ever visits the Chicago area & has the room for a grill, I can probably hook you up with a Weber charcoal grill (assuming I haven't already gotten rid of all the damn black ones I've accumulated for the "extras" that came with them).  There are a couple I'll be keeping, for sentimental reasons or whatnot.

I'll even share a wee drop, or two, of my Tullamore Dew with you.

I had a family Thanksgiving when I was a kid where the host relative was serving a smoked ham.  All was well until their family dogs got ahold of it.  Rather than throwing away the ham, the relative removed the part that the dogs had chewed on and still served it.  The real confession is that part of the family, myself included, warned one another to not eat the ham.  Several others ate it none the wiser that the real secret sauce was dog slobber.

I'm actually in the Midwest, not even the east coast of Lake Michigan.  But, yeah, that would be quite a hike.  I've driven Chicago to Phoenix & back a number of times, but that is peanuts in comparison.

I once sold one of those trailer hitch platforms to a guy from Alaska who took a plane here, just to buy a used 4 wheel drive vehicle.  He said he did it every couple of years because anything with 4wd costs an arm & a leg by him, so he'd drive them around for a while, then resell them.  He bought the platform because there is a long stretch, at least partially through Canada where there is not a gas station for a very long time & you had to bring extra gas to be safe, so he was going to strap a bunch of gas cans to the platform.  Thought that was pretty wild.  Although I also ran into a Mexican who would buy used pickups trucks in Chicago & then sell them in Mexico.

I applied at Weber once...  never received a call back.

I have one grill in the attic above the garage that no one knows about (until now).

I keep garbage bags in my cars in case I find a greasy kettle that needs a ride.

- I paid $180 for a brand new Master Touch with P-vents, even though I’d already paid $130 for a new-in-box Master Touch without P-vents, and could have bought a twice-used Master Touch without P-vents for $60.

- I still haven’t cooked with P-vents

- While I was trying to decide if P-vents were worth the extra money, I bought a $25 22” original kettle after driving over an hour to pick it up, thinking I was buying a 26” kettle (seller kept saying he didn’t know what size it was, just that it was the “big Weber”)

- I’ve cooked and smoked on that $25 almost exclusively since I got it home

- The best steaks I make are on my Jumbo Joe, and I have no plans to ever cook steak on the kettle

- I use lighter fluid to light baskets in the Jumbo Joe

- I let my now-fiancé talk me into letting her use a full full-size chimney in my Smokey Joe… every time she cooked. It isn’t really usable as a grill anymore.

- I taught myself how to cook on my Smokey Joe, bought in 2013

- I miss my Smokey Joe a lot

- I never once felt like the Smokey Joe was too cramped, but I immediately felt like the Jumbo Joe that replaced it was too small. Last night, grilling in the rain during a power outage, I felt like my 22” was too small and now I want a 26”… even though I still haven’t used my Master Touch.

- I want a cool new colored Weber, but I know I’ll get sick at my stomach the moment it starts looking dirty.

- I passed on a used-once 18” WSM last week because I really don’t think I’d use it.

- I’ve never cooked with briquettes, only lump

- I didn’t realize that my dad’s hamburgers tasted the way they did because he used so much lighter fluid until I started grilling for myself in my Smokey Joe.

- I asked for a Smokey Joe Premium for my birthday JUST to have a small grill with a lid bale to cook burgers on.

- I believe Weber CharBaskets are the greatest grilling accessories ever invented and they have changed my grilling life

A full-size chimney is way too much charcoal for a 14 inch grill. Over time, bad things happen.

-i really don't know how many kettles i have.

-i have several kettles in the house, some still in their box, some wrapped in cellophane so i can see them AND keep them clean.

-the patio has been populated by so many kettles for a couple years now, there is no room for anything else.

-for fun i go to the patio and lift a cover to see what's hiding underneath- "Oh yeah, I remember you!" or, "Cool! I forgot about you!"

-i use one of my SSPs to transport an 8K A/C unit from storage to the window it goes into.

-it's possible my Weberitis has become a neurosis. :p

Sell a ticket to someone else with Weberitis.  You can pull one cover for $X and it is yours.  Maybe they get luck, maybe you get lucky lol.

- I have several grills and grill parts which I purchase from fellow WKC members still sitting in their boxes in my garage.

- I have yet to finish and post one of my many kettle projects which I have all the parts for.

- Not really a confession, but I'm down to my last 3 bags of Weber Charcoal Briquettes, since being discontinued.

- I have yet to post a cook on here.

- I recently purchased a used Stok Drum Kettle for $10 bucks, and no new replacement parts are available to restore it. Stok went out of business couple of years ago.

I was given a 22in Kettle, would never buy one new, on sale or not

I don’t have any fancy accessories, but my cousin has a SlownSear that he said we would send me

I’m more of a pellet guy, have a vertical smoker, regular grill/smoker and a Weber SmokeFire that’s huge and not very well designed( but that was free too for the kettle guy)

Only reason I have a Kettle is for when we lose power…

Pulled pork is my least favorite thing to have and make. Most places that make it don’t do it very well…

When possible, I don’t pay more than 7–8 dollars for a 20 pound bag of pellets. Clearance is my jam.

I save my unburned charcoal lumps to reuse.
