Drove by a two-family flat in an area not too far from my house today and spotted this...
(http://i1335.photobucket.com/albums/w667/BobBQ13/CAM00396_zpsxvlkpcx_edit_1386884602960_zps2kuzemvr.jpg) (http://s1335.photobucket.com/user/BobBQ13/media/CAM00396_zpsxvlkpcx_edit_1386884602960_zps2kuzemvr.jpg.html)
There were no cars in the driveway, and I had my 3 year old with me, so I didn't ring the doorbell, but I intend on going back as soon as possible. From my viewpoint, it appears to be in good shape. It looks like it has the ashpan; can't say for sure, but it didn't look like there were handles on the bowl.
Would love to get your opinion on what a reasonable cash or trade offer I should make for this beauty....
-
holllllyyyyy ballls.
what should you offer?
offer to take care of it first. if you go to the door with googly eyes and a low-ball, they will think that you're out to make money.
let them know that you collect and would LOVE to restore it for them.
ask about its history before you ask if you can buy it.
let them know what the restoration involves as far as time, money, and skills.
i would start with an offer of 75 and have at least $300 with me.
-
i'd drop mine off and head straight back with $400. I'd just cut to the chase and give my strongest offer. one i would be extremely happy with weather they would take less or not. i think i'd start at $250 and go up by 100 then 50 as a last ditch. keep in mind i have never seen or touched one.
-
oh my...
From that photo, it looks to be nice, cant even see any surface rust on the cart. Ask them if they use it much, if not, maybe they don't care to much about it? Maybe even offer to buy them a new OTG or OTS to trade? You never know. But as the others said, bring extra money with you. Cash is always king. If its in that nice of condition...bring fresh 100's with you. It will be sure to get their attention if they might be on the fence! Keep us posted.

I think your kids car seat will strap to that cart. Knock on the door and drop your car keys in the owners hand and walk that badboy home.
That's awesome you saw that in the wild. I bet you feel like you shot a photo of a Sasquatch.

Sweet! Well spotted. A few nice old grills being spotted in St Lou these days. :)

Nice find! I would just ask them if they would consider selling it. If you feel the need, tell them it was just like one that Grandpa had when you were growing up and it brings back great memories. Most average people aren't really attached to the oddballs. I bet they would let it go for a hunert and be really happy.

Duke just called me an oddball.. :P Seriously though, like the others have said.... bring extra cash, offer a trade for a brand new cooker, if they still like colored kettles, a green or blue or copper OTG might be a nice trade up for them. That is if they don't want black. Good luck and keep us posted.

Grail!

I'd offer a new Performer-Platinum-Charcoal w/gas ignition and it won't rust if left out in the weather.
-
Yea if you start offering all kinds of money and acting a fool you won't get it. Don't even bring up the collecting thing right away. Just ask if they would be willing to part with it and see how it goes. Tell them your into old Webers and this one is cool. Talk about the history a little, see where it came from...just don't act like it's something extremely amazing

You could always see if he wants a left one. Wasn't it established that they go for a fair bit of money recently?

+1. Go in soft. Find out if they love it or need to make space on patio or if it's grandpas favorite thing in the world. Make nice and be cool. Leave your number in case they want to sell in the future.

The "Counting Cars" guy approach, or in this case "Counting Cookers"
-
Kettle pickers. Roll up with a list of things you are lookin tO buy and ask if he doesnt mind showing you around.
-
Great spot brother! Well, I can't give you an estimate on what to offer but I'd try and do another drive-by when the roads clear up a little. If they have it covered or not might give you a good gauge on how much they value that thing. The ranger by my house is currently uncovered under a couple of inches of snow. The guy just won't answer the door.

So.... What happened?

So.... What happened?
Nothing yet. Hoping to get back there this weekend. Crazy busy with work and the holidays... haven't had time to drop by yet.

Don't mention anything about it being valuable or collectible. The guy will immediately begin to realize he has something of value and will demand big $$$. I would play up the angle of how this particular model has some personal sentimental value for you and try to get it that way. Also, as others have said, bring extra cash just in case. When all else fails, it might be the thing to persuade them, especially right before Christmas. Good luck Bob.
-
You need to make up something like, "my grandfather used to have one and he died and the family gave it away and I really was hoping to get another one back" I've never seen any other one like it I don't know what it's worth, blah blah blah

I doubt it's a Grillfella's.... otherwise there would be detailed pics! Hoping to drive by tomorrow, if I get a few minutes.

Good luck as I hope you get it. It will get the TLC it deserves.

Was hoping to go ring the doorbell today, but my little man is sick... wound up staying home with him all day, while my wife and daughter finished up Christmas shopping. I went out tonight, and did a drive-by... there she stood, unprotected in the cold and rain ???. Porch light was on, but again, no car in the driveway. Didn't think it would be terribly wise to ring the bell @ 9pm on a cold, rainy, dark night, so I held off. Tomorrow is Christmas @ the in-laws. We'll see what next weekend brings.

I like what Zavod has suggested as an approach. I might even enlist the aid of your wife in making the inquiry them... something along the lines of surprising her hubby for his birthday might work too.

Oh thats good!

That's Real good!!!!! I have to remember that!!!
-
I tried the wife approach once. It was a nice old brown 22". I had her go up to the door and ask, you know sob story it a bit. She was hoping to get the old man that lived there but instead got the old mans wife. It didn't go so well, but I still get to see it in there backyard almost everyday.

i am dying of anticipation. :P

No news yet... like most of the midwest and northeast, we've been snowed in for the past couple of weeks. Actually have a full weekend off from work this weekend. Will try to make it by there Saturday or Sunday.
