Has anyone ever had their weber glowing red hot?
I was at my cousin's last night and he had the 26'er glowing red it was that hot. Has anyone else ever done or seen this?
This is something I had never seen before, I tried taking a pic, but it was to dark out.
-
DAAAAMN!!! You canadians go all crazy shit with your sears huh?!...LOL
-
I have one that is red right now! LOL
I've never seen one that hot. Or, maybe they get that hot and because it was dark it showed up?

i don't think I have had my 26er glow but they will get fiercely hot like crazy hot especially with lump much hotter than I could ever get a 22

That's why you saw the glow …. Because it was dark out. Don't see the glow in daylight.
Next time try taking a selfie with the glowing kettle in the background … :P :P
-
Hold on. "It was to dark out." You are seeing odd things. And you call yourself Darko. Do you own a kamado?
-
Well, I tried it tonight. Dumped a bunch of lump, enough that the whole thing was filled to almost the cooking grate level. I still couldn't get the kettle to glow red, although I could feel heat 5 feet away. Damn this tasks me.!!!! I gotta make it glow red!
-
Keep trying!!!!!!! Fill it to past the cooking grate next time. Or maybe just paint it RED!

Almost there! don't give up now. Just imagine, you will be the first to do so.
I believe Mr. Darko is deliberately having fun doing this and to see what kind of reaction he gets. It would be amazing to see a kettle glowing red hot thou. :o :o ;D :)
Most entertaining Topic ever. :) :) :) ;)

Well, 45 lbs of royal oak, I still can't get it to glow.(http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160915/9a8afe74f520eae8a110260f7a3c706d.jpg)

Are the lower vents on the 26 inch larger? Being able to deliver more combustion air would make it run hotter for sure.
-
More oxygen! Got a leaf blower?
-
If the leaf blower doesn't do it how about a surplus Stelco blast furnace blower?
-
You should toss on 15 to 20 splits of hickory just before using the leaf blower. Some gasoline too. Yeah toss some gasoline on and see if it turns red for ya.
-
Don't tempt me!
One way or another, I'm gonna make this glow red!
-
When the legs melt in the bowl sockets you'll be close. Keep a garden hose handy.
-
it would need to be about 1000 degrees, possibly more, to get the incandescent glow
If you're trying to reproduce the effect, you'll need as much conductive heat transfer as possible. Bank the coals as much as you can
I have some techniques for getting a ultra-raging bed of coals that might help you out.
1. bank one chimney of unlit lump
2. add one chimney of lit lump
3. wait 10 minutes (no lid)
4. add another chimney of unlit lump
5. wait 10 minutes
6. add anoter 3/4 chimney of unlit lump
7. stir the coals to knock off ash and distribute unlit
8. stoke (bellows, air pump, fan, hair dryer, leaf blower)
warning - that will literally destroy your cooking and your charcoal grates. This gets hot enough to full melt aluminum.
-
@Troy - you mean like this? This was in the bowl of an old faded black 18" I picked up for the ash pan. It had melted second ash pan inside.

I made a fire pit out of a 22 with a washing machine tub and the lid glows when there's a bunch of wood in it. Takes a bed of coals and a hot fire. Infra red laser thermo read over 1200 degrees.

I got to around 650. Mind you I was using briquettes. I'll try lump.
-
All that fuel and only 650? My first pizza cook had the needle way past 600 and that was half Stubbs plus 1 chimney of lump. I bet that was a ton of ash to clean up! Maybe try leaving one of the bottom vents clear of charcoal?

LMAO!
-
I was surprised too. I figured I would have the therm pegged. I gotta find my laser therm.
-
Laser says around 650 as well on the lid. Lid off it pegs around 1000+ But I still can't get the bowl to glow red.
-
Urban legend.

That's a cool pic right there.

I think I may have this finally! I got some Jealous Devil lump charcoal. Says it can go to 1100 degrees. Add a 18" black I dont really use... this may work.

this should be fun !!

I got a kettle to glow red only one time. It was in the remnants of a kettle we were using as a fire pit. Only happened that one time in 2017 and never have been able to replicate the occurrence.

Cool! No, I mean hot??!!!
Did the kettle have enamel before the fire?

Probably the only time I have gotten close is when I do a pizza cook. I did see the baskets glow that cook, but it wasn't dark enough (and didn't really look) at the lower portion of the kettle to see if it might have been glowing.

Well, tonight will be the night.

I'm guessing around 1500 degrees given some of the information I've read.

The bowl is fine. Not something you would want to do on a regular basis.
-
You mean no finish popping or warping? That's amazing.
-

Nope nothing. I'm sure if I did these banked cooks on a constant basis you'd see the finish crazing after a year or so. My original kettle I ran for 4 yrs and the outside looked like shit. Inside was still good. Weber replaced it with no issues.
If you're interested, I can see how hot I can get this grill. White hot might be tough.

You may want to move that a little farther from your garage.
And car.
-
Nope. I need a bigger fan.. got it red like last time. But couldn't get much hotter. I think I'm good with fuel, but I need more air..

All kidding aside. I'm not sure how far I want to take this. 4 yrs ago I saw my cousins grill get red hot. Finally I managed to do the same.
It was just a fun thing to try.
There is a part of me that wants to go stupid with this and just see how far I can go.
But, then there is the other part that says, you did what you wanted. Why go further?
You'd think that after 59 years on this planet, I would know better. Sometimes you just have to say fuckit. Life happens once.
So now, I have to ask am I good with this...or can I get a deal on some thermite!!![emoji56]

If you're uncomfortable tempting the gods, then stop. No point in overdoing it. You already have my vote for largest, hottest balls.

Nah, I'm not uncomfortable at all.
