Title: 1976-77 weathered warrior
Post by: Izzygrillz on July 27, 2019, 05:03:56 PM
Kettles of this age never come up for sale around here and this one caught my eye, I’m picking it up Monday, couple questions, what’s some pointers for clean up and restore? I wanna keep the patina, and how can I narrow down wether it’s a 76 or 77, thanks Izzy

The way it says WEBER on the vent makes it a '77.  In '78, it was embossed.  In '76 it said Bar B Kettle & Weber above it, but much smaller.

The first rule of Weathered Warriors is...you don’t clean Weathered Warriors. BTW...yours is a ‘77.

You clean the inside though right?

I would. If I’m cleaning a cooker I just razor scrape the lid and bowl inside. I don’t make it sparkly clean as it makes no sense to me since it will be dirty that day or week. I will let it pre-heat a little longer to get the grate good and hot, then give the grate a good scrape and throw down some grub.

Only grills I’ll try to shine up the inside are ones I’ll spend more time looking at. Enjoy the WW.

Clean the inside yes. Scrape it if there’s a lot of gunk. You could also add a lit chimney or two spread evenly across the charcoal grate to burn it out.

Fix the caddywampus? Up to you. I know some people are really OCD about it and must have it corrected. I personally would...you’ll take the legs off to clean it anyway.

I clean them up extra good before I use them, mainly because I don't know if cannibals or something owned the grill at one time or another. In sure a really hot fire would do the trick too, but I'm currently deep. Cleaning this ssp. I should grind the ash sweep out and really get it clean, but I think I'm gonna hold off on that, cause it adds another 30 bucks to my project

A used weber pretty or ugly gets the full cleaning treatment. I get a sense of personal satisfaction when it stands tall in all its glory amongst other showroom webers.

Clean it really, really good.  They might have been vegetarians.

Thanks guys! It’s cool how the brown you see on the lid is in the porcelain, it’s smooth and glossy to the touch, love how it looks!
