With the amount you paid for the framing ... very reasonable price,
I figure it would be cheaper doing what you did than fabricating something from scratch.

I did not price out fabricating a frame....possibly could be cheaper, especially if you know how to weld.  I enjoy tinkering on projects like these and figured the parts were accessible so why not.  Some have asked so here are a few more details:
To start, I cut a piece of aluminum tubing exactly 8 3/4" (for measuring purposes) and centered it over the hole on the original frame, scored each end and made my cuts.  Here's the resulting pieces.


Then cut a section of 1" aluminum tubing approximately 8" long then cut an equal length of thin aluminum 3/4" angle


The square tubing was inserted into the frame and the angle was placed on the corners to make an almost perfect fit.   


The frame pieces were slid together (these are the scrap pieces so the fit isn't perfect)


A 1/4" hole was drilled at the seam for the center bolt and two other 1/4" holes were drilled about 2" on each side of the center hole to hold the pieces together. 

There was a question on how the bowl was attached to the frame.  I used the 3/4" angle as a guide between the top of the frame and the bowl edge to allow the bolts to be at or just below the grate level.  I also used a pliers to bend/mold the bolt phlanges to match the shape of the bowl for a better fit. 



I also removed the heat shield from the handle and added a wood handle.

Question.....
If you removed 8-3/4" from the center of each frame, why does it look like more than 4-3/8" from center in your pic below of the removed sections ?

Optical illusion, camera angle, not sure.  I took two straight on photos and they both turned out like that.  Heres a better shot...

Tape measure is on the ground while the tubing "top" is closer to the camera.  Kinda like when you hold a fish with extended arms - it looks bigger in the picture.  But I agree, it does look rather different verses the measurement G tossed out there.
