The ashpan on the left has a flat lip, while the one on the right has the lip rolled over. I've seen both ways but never had a new pan to see what's correct.

Jeff

They both look like they have an edge to me...one more so than the other.  Depends on what grill you are putting it on....any pics?  Somewhere about mid 70's and older have a pan that has no rolled edge.  Maybe Craig can chime in here?
Kettle collector AND cooker!

The one on the right looks like the standard rolled edge ash pans used from 1979-1986. The one on the left, to me looks like a straight edge with the edge bent to look more like the one on the right. The rolled edge ones have the raised ring in the center like the modern ones do today. I don't see a raised ring on the left one.

The one on the left has no center ring, it s from a 60's metal handle with wingnuts on the leg sockets  the one on the right is from a G '85. So the pre patent kettles had a flat edge on the ashpan?

Correct. From about 1964-1979, the ash pans were twist on straight edged. In mid 1979 Weber retooled the pans to the one like your G '85 pan. My '79 red 22 has the straight edge pan, Landgraftj has or had a '79 brown 22 with the rolled edge pan. So the "A" kettles were transitional with ash pans.
