My awesome wife that always questions my kettle count bought me an All American Kettle for my b-day. I remember seeing posts that I unfortunately can't find about mounting the new style handle to the lid that will reduce the handles from getting loose and chipping the lid.  I remember maybe fiber washers like on the fire pit or maybe stainless washers and nuts to replace the originals. My mind is a blur. Any help would be appreciated. Is there going to be are- release of the custom "old style" handles. May be a good time! Thank you all!

Hmm I can't say I've ever left the new handles on long enough to find out! I think that the biggest problem is usually over tightening them when first fitting, seen quite a few reviews about people effing that up!

It's not hard to make your own old school handles to be fair, I used some 20mm flat carbon steel, a few measurements against the holes so they line up, put the bar in a vice or over a table edge and smack it with a hammer. 6mm drill bit and a little filing(rounding) off of the edges, couple of coats of hammerite aerosol and you're good to go.

I think that when I got my 26 Glen Blue I put a larger stainless fender washer on the inside. The lid is so much heavier on the 26 inch I was worried about the handle flexing and chipping the lid. It has seemed to help and has held up well. Peace of mind if nothing else. I did use the factory supplied handle. I guess I don't mind the taco heat shield that much.

Happy Birthday, Troy! As far as the handles/handle straps, it was @Lilyankee who made them in the past, with help from

@bladz for distribution. The question would be up to @Lilyankee if a round 3 demand is high enough. I think Jim a.k.a.

@Cellar2ful knows of a WKC member in California who can make them also.

I've got some experience with the newer handles... I was lucky to get in on the purchase of the Lilyankee handles and they are far superior to anything else you could make or find.  That said, the design of them is very flat and no washer is needed between the handle and lid, however I've always used the stock Weber nut on the underside as it does spread the tension to a larger area similar to a fender washer but is soft enough to conform to the kettle.  The Tom Horsman video of the new Stars and Stripes grill mentions fiber washers coming with the grill to install between handle and lid.  I'm thinking that's a good idea if using the stock handle.  Here's a picture of one of Lilyankee's handle on a blue mastertouch.  I ordered 6 back then and I'd order at least that many again if he decides to make them - maybe more.  Hopefully he will!

Cheers

Paired with a set of Zavod's and it's a really nice look.  Would probably need to be red or blue on the stars and stripes version.....

Last I messaged with him, Lilyankee no longer makes the handles. We do have another member that has made a bunch of those non-taco handles.  His WKC handle is @fivetenchef

In regards to the fiber washers, I found the perfect size at Outdooe Supply Hardware.
 They are 1/4"ID,  1/2" OD
