Temp gauge thru center of lid vent.
« on: May 30, 2022, 06:21:05 PM »
Has anyone done it? Thoughts on if its a good idea or not?

Obviously I would have to drill open the lid and the lid vent. I was thinking of 2 nuts jammed together to set the tension so the lid vent and temp gauge can "float/freely move" together.

I figure you usually want the vent over your food anyways right? But its always on the opp side which is just directly over the coals.

potential cons is maybe the temp gauge blocks air flow since it would be right over top the 4 holes. I gotta measure that. The temp gauge is 1 3/4" dia.

other con is maybe smoke will discolour the temp gauge lens quickly... this is my main worry i think. But I would imagine that can easily be cleaned.

I want to try this. I have tried using the search function with no luck. Have googled it too nothin.

This is the the thermometer I purchased it works well no extra drilling required just to get rid of the rivet. I’d say it’s about 20-30 degrees higher than grate level. But I like it because a lot of times I don’t need exact temps I’m good with +/- 30 degrees and just use my instant read thermometer for the final temp. (Except in this picture I’m using a grate level thermometer haha) Also haven’t noticed air blockage over the vents.

Tel-Tru is the best. We have them in all of our Kettles. Two are permanently installed, one is in the lid vent.
